اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي ظُلْمًا كَثِيْرًا وَلَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَغْفِرَةً مِّنْ عِنْدِكَ وَارْحَمْنِيْ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُوْرُ الرَّحِيْمُ

Transliteration

Allaahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kathiran wa laa yaghfirudh-dhunuba illaa Anta, faghfir li maghfiratan min 'indika warhamni, innaka Antal-Ghafurur-Rahim

Translation

O Allah! I have done great injustice to myself and none except You forgives sins, so bestow on me a forgiveness from You, and Have Mercy on me, You are the Forgiver, the Merciful.

Hadith about the Dua

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَيْرِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ‏.‏ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلِّمْنِي دُعَاءً أَدْعُو بِهِ فِي صَلاَتِي‏.‏ قَالَ ‏ "‏ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي ظُلْمًا كَثِيرًا وَلاَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ، فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَغْفِرَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ، وَارْحَمْنِي إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ ‏" ‏‏.‏

Translation

Narrated Abu Bakr As-Siddiq: I asked Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to teach me an invocation so that I may invoke Allah with it in my prayer. He told me to say, "Allahumma inni zalumtu nafsi zulman kathiran, Wala yaghfiru dh-dhunuba illa anta, fa ghfir li maghfiratan min `indika, wa r-hamni, innaka anta l-ghafuru r-rahim (O Allah! I have done great injustice to myself and none except You forgives sins, so bestow on me a forgiveness from You, and Have Mercy on me, You are the Forgiver, the Merciful). [Bukhari: 834]

Common Questions

Many say Astaghfirullah al-Adheem al-ladhi la ilaha illa Huwa al-Hayyul-Qayyum wa atubu ilayh to ask Allah to forgive. Say it with a true heart - big and small sins can be forgiven.

Muslims often use Astaghfirullah or Astaghfirullāha rabbī wa-atūbu ilayhi. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us to say Astaghfirullah many times. That's the main way.

Feel very sorry. Promise you won't do it again. Make sincere dua and ask Allah to forgive you. Do good deeds too - the Prophet taught this in hadith.

Surah Al-Ikhlas, also called Surah Al-Tawhid. Read it 100 times - years of sins can be forgiven, except the biggest ones. Muslims love this short surah for prayer.
