All praise is to Allah, praise in abundance, good and blessed. It cannot [be compensated for, nor can it] be left, nor can it be done without, our Lord.

Hadith about the Dua

Translation

Narrated Abu Umama: Whenever the dining sheet of the Prophet (ﷺ) was taken away (i.e., whenever he finished his meal), he used to say: "Al-hamdu li l-lah kathiran taiyiban mubarakan fihi ghaira makfiy wala muWada` wala mustaghna'anhu Rabbuna." [Bukhari: 5458, Sahih (Albani). Tirmidhi: 3456]

Common Questions

Say alhamdulillah after every meal. This is the best way to thank Allah for food. It follows the sunnah of eating and means all praise goes to Allah for what He gave, no matter how much or how little.

Eat only enough to stop your hunger. Do not eat too much. The sunnah of eating teaches Muslims to avoid eating more than needed and to be happy with what is enough for staying healthy.

Say this: Alhamdu lillāhi 'l-ladhī aṭ`amanī hādhā wa razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah. It praises Allah for the food and for giving us strength.

Allah will give you more when you thank Him for food and other blessings. Saying thank you Allah after eating brings more blessings into your life, as the quranic dua teaches.

Muslims say alhamdulillah. This simple word, part of the masnun duas, shows you are grateful. It follows the sunnah of eating that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his followers.
