What to Say When You Eat or Drink (Alhamdulillah)

Hadith about the Dua
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَابْنُ، نُمَيْرٍ - وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ نُمَيْرٍ - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ عَنْ زَكَرِيَّاءَ بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ، مَالِكٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَيَرْضَى عَنِ الْعَبْدِ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ الأَكْلَةَ فَيَحْمَدَهُ عَلَيْهَا أَوْ يَشْرَبَ الشَّرْبَةَ فَيَحْمَدَهُ عَلَيْهَا " .
Translation
Anas b. Malik reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Allah is pleased with His servant who says: Al-Hamdu lillah while taking a morsel of food and while drinking. [Muslim: 2734]
Common Questions
O Allah, You fed us and gave us drink. You showed us the right path and gave us life. We praise You for all You gave us. Muslims say this dua at meals.
Before you eat, say Bismillah. Use your right hand. Take food from the side close to you. This is the Sunnah of eating from muslim prayer and islamic duas.
Never waste food or drink. Do not eat too much. Verse 7:31 tells Muslims: eat and drink, but do not go over your limit. This teaching is part of dua in islam.
Fill one third with food. One third with water. Leave one third empty for air. This rule comes from islamic prayers and keeps your body balanced when you eat.
Never eat pork, dead animals, or drink alcohol. Only eat what Allah allowed. Follow the rules in masnoon dua and islamic duas.
