Abdullah bin Sarjis (RA) once said to the Prophet (ﷺ): "O Messenger of Allah! -

غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَكَ

Transliteration

Ghafar-Allahu lak

Translation

May Allah forgive you.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) replied:

وَلَكَ

Transliteration

Wa lak

Translation

May Allah forgive you too. [1]

The people who heard this asked, "Did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ask forgiveness for you?" He said: "Yes, and for you too." Then he recited this verse: [2]

وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ

Translation

Ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. (Surah Muhammad 47:19)

When to Recite Forgiveness Dua

Common Questions

Say Astaghfirullah or Astaghfirullāha rabbī wa-atūbu ilayhi. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said these in masura and masnun duas to seek forgiveness.

Thank Allah for everything He gives. Admit what you did wrong with a true heart. Say masura or masnun duas. Believe that only Allah forgives every sin.
