31:22
۞وَمَن
waman
And whoever
يُسۡلِمۡ
yus'lim
submits
وَجۡهَهُۥٓ
wajhahu
his face
إِلَى
ila
to
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
وَهُوَ
wahuwa
while he
مُحۡسِنٞ
muh'sinun
(is) a good-doer
فَقَدِ
faqadi
then indeed
ٱسۡتَمۡسَكَ
is'tamsaka
he has grasped
بِٱلۡعُرۡوَةِ
bil-'ur'wati
the handhold
ٱلۡوُثۡقَىٰۗ
al-wuth'qa
the most trustworthy
وَإِلَى
wa-ila
And to
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
عَٰقِبَةُ
aqibatu
(is the) end
ٱلۡأُمُورِ
al-umuri
(of) the matters
٢٢

Whoever directs himself wholly to God and does good work has grasped the surest handhold, for the outcome of everything is with God

Translation 1260

31:23
وَمَن
waman
And whoever
كَفَرَ
kafara
disbelieves
فَلَا
fala
let not
يَحۡزُنكَ
yahzunka
grieve you
كُفۡرُهُۥٓۚ
kuf'ruhu
his disbelief
إِلَيۡنَا
ilayna
To Us
مَرۡجِعُهُمۡ
marji'uhum
(is) their return
فَنُنَبِّئُهُم
fanunabbi-uhum
then We will inform them
بِمَا
bima
of what
عَمِلُوٓاْۚ
amilu
they did
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
عَلِيمُۢ
alimun
(is) the All-Knower
بِذَاتِ
bidhati
of what
ٱلصُّدُورِ
al-suduri
(is in) the breasts
٢٣

As for those who refuse to do this, do not let their refusal sadden you [Prophet]- they will return to Us and We shall tell them what they have done: God knows all that hearts contain

Translation 1260

31:24
نُمَتِّعُهُمۡ
numatti'uhum
We grant them enjoyment
قَلِيلٗا
qalilan
(for) a little
ثُمَّ
thumma
then
نَضۡطَرُّهُمۡ
nadtarruhum
We will force them
إِلَىٰ
ila
to
عَذَابٍ
adhabin
a punishment
غَلِيظٖ
ghalizin
severe
٢٤

We let them enjoy themselves for a little while, but We shall drive them to a harsh torment

31:25
وَلَئِن
wala-in
And if
سَأَلۡتَهُم
sa-altahum
you ask them
مَّنۡ
man
Who
خَلَقَ
khalaqa
created
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
al-samawati
the heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ
wal-arda
and the earth
لَيَقُولُنَّ
layaqulunna
They will surely say
ٱللَّهُۚ
al-lahu
Allah
قُلِ
quli
Say
ٱلۡحَمۡدُ
al-hamdu
All praises
لِلَّهِۚ
lillahi
(are) for Allah
بَلۡ
bal
But
أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ
aktharuhum
most of them
لَا
la
(do) not
يَعۡلَمُونَ
ya'lamuna
know
٢٥

If you ask them who created the heavens and earth, they are sure to say, ‘God.’ Say, ‘Praise belongs to God,’ but most of them do not understand

Translation 1260

31:26
لِلَّهِ
lillahi
To Allah (belongs)
مَا
ma
whatever
فِي
fi
(is) in
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
al-samawati
the heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ
wal-ardi
and the earth
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
هُوَ
huwa
He
ٱلۡغَنِيُّ
al-ghaniyu
(is) Free of need
ٱلۡحَمِيدُ
al-hamidu
the Praiseworthy
٢٦

Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to God. God is self-sufficient and worthy of all praise

Translation 1260

31:27
وَلَوۡ
walaw
And if
أَنَّمَا
annama
whatever
فِي
fi
(is) in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the earth
مِن
min
of
شَجَرَةٍ
shajaratin
(the) trees
أَقۡلَٰمٞ
aqlamun
(were) pens
وَٱلۡبَحۡرُ
wal-bahru
and the sea
يَمُدُّهُۥ
yamudduhu
(to) add to it
مِنۢ
min
after it
بَعۡدِهِۦ
ba'dihi
after it
سَبۡعَةُ
sab'atu
seven
أَبۡحُرٖ
abhurin
seas
مَّا
ma
not
نَفِدَتۡ
nafidat
would be exhausted
كَلِمَٰتُ
kalimatu
(the) Words
ٱللَّهِۚ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
عَزِيزٌ
azizun
(is) All-Mighty
حَكِيمٞ
hakimun
All-Wise
٢٧

If all the trees on earth were pens and all the seas, with seven more seas besides, [were ink,] still God’s words would not run out: God is almighty and all wise

Translation 1260

31:28
مَّا
ma
Not
خَلۡقُكُمۡ
khalqukum
(is) your creation
وَلَا
wala
and not
بَعۡثُكُمۡ
ba'thukum
your resurrection
إِلَّا
illa
but
كَنَفۡسٖ
kanafsin
as a soul
وَٰحِدَةٍۚ
wahidatin
single
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
سَمِيعُۢ
sami'un
(is) All-Hearer
بَصِيرٌ
basirun
All-Seer
٢٨

Creating and resurrecting all of you is only like creating or resurrecting a single soul: God is all hearing and all seeing

ٱلَّيۡلَ

the night

ٱلنَّهَارِ
al-nahari
the day
وَيُولِجُ
wayuliju
and causes to enter
ٱلنَّهَارَ
al-nahara
the day
فِي
fi
into
ٱلَّيۡلِ
al-layli
the night
وَسَخَّرَ
wasakhara
and has subjected
ٱلشَّمۡسَ
al-shamsa
the sun
وَٱلۡقَمَرَۖ
wal-qamara
and the moon
كُلّٞ
kullun
each
يَجۡرِيٓ
yajri
moving
إِلَىٰٓ
ila
for
أَجَلٖ
ajalin
a term
مُّسَمّٗى
musamman
appointed
وَأَنَّ
wa-anna
and that
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
بِمَا
bima
of what
تَعۡمَلُونَ
ta'maluna
you do
خَبِيرٞ
khabirun
(is) All-Aware
٢٩

[Prophet], do you not see that God causes the night to merge into day and the day to merge into night; that He has subjected the sun and the moon, each to run its course for a stated term; that He is aware of everything you [people] do

Translation 1260

31:30
ذَٰلِكَ
dhalika
That
بِأَنَّ
bi-anna
(is) because
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
هُوَ
huwa
He
ٱلۡحَقُّ
al-haqu
(is) the Truth
وَأَنَّ
wa-anna
and that
مَا
ma
what
يَدۡعُونَ
yad'una
they call
مِن
min
besides Him
دُونِهِ
dunihi
besides Him
ٱلۡبَٰطِلُ
al-batilu
(is) [the] falsehood
وَأَنَّ
wa-anna
and that
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
هُوَ
huwa
He
ٱلۡعَلِيُّ
al-'aliyu
(is) the Most High
ٱلۡكَبِيرُ
al-kabiru
the Most Great
٣٠

This is because God is the Truth, and what they invoke beside Him is false. He is the Most High, Most Great

Translation 1260

31:31
أَلَمۡ
alam
Do not
تَرَ
tara
you see
أَنَّ
anna
that
ٱلۡفُلۡكَ
al-ful'ka
the ships
تَجۡرِي
tajri
sail
فِي
fi
through
ٱلۡبَحۡرِ
al-bahri
the sea
بِنِعۡمَتِ
bini'mati
by (the) Grace
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
لِيُرِيَكُم
liyuriyakum
that He may show you
مِّنۡ
min
of
ءَايَٰتِهِۦٓۚ
ayatihi
His Signs
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
فِي
fi
in
ذَٰلِكَ
dhalika
that
لَأٓيَٰتٖ
laayatin
surely (are) Signs
لِّكُلِّ
likulli
for everyone
صَبَّارٖ
sabbarin
(who is) patient
شَكُورٖ
shakurin
grateful
٣١

[Prophet], do you not see that ships sail through the sea, by the grace of God, to show you [people] some of His wonders? Truly there are signs in this for every steadfast, thankful person

Translation 1260

31:32
وَإِذَا
wa-idha
And when
غَشِيَهُم
ghashiyahum
covers them
مَّوۡجٞ
mawjun
a wave
كَٱلظُّلَلِ
kal-zulali
like canopies
دَعَوُاْ
da'awu
they call
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
مُخۡلِصِينَ
mukh'lisina
(being) sincere
لَهُ
lahu
to Him
ٱلدِّينَ
al-dina
(in) religion
فَلَمَّا
falamma
But when
نَجَّىٰهُمۡ
najjahum
He delivers them
إِلَى
ila
to
ٱلۡبَرِّ
al-bari
the land
فَمِنۡهُم
famin'hum
then among them
مُّقۡتَصِدٞۚ
muq'tasidun
(some are) moderate
وَمَا
wama
And not
يَجۡحَدُ
yajhadu
deny
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ
biayatina
Our Signs
إِلَّا
illa
except
كُلُّ
kullu
every
خَتَّارٖ
khattarin
traitor
كَفُورٖ
kafurin
ungrateful
٣٢

When the waves loom over those on board like giant shadows they call out to God, devoting their religion entirely to Him. But, when He has delivered them safely to land, some of them waver- only a treacherous, thankless person refuses to acknowledge Our signs

Translation 1260

31:33
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
yaayyuha
O
ٱلنَّاسُ
al-nasu
mankind
ٱتَّقُواْ
ittaqu
Fear
رَبَّكُمۡ
rabbakum
your Lord
وَٱخۡشَوۡاْ
wa-ikh'shaw
and fear
يَوۡمٗا
yawman
a Day
لَّا
la
not
يَجۡزِي
yajzi
can avail
وَالِدٌ
walidun
a father
عَن
an
[for]
وَلَدِهِۦ
waladihi
his son
وَلَا
wala
and not
مَوۡلُودٌ
mawludun
a son
هُوَ
huwa
he
جَازٍ
jazin
(can) avail
عَن
an
[for]
وَالِدِهِۦ
walidihi
his father
شَيۡـًٔاۚ
shayan
anything
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
وَعۡدَ
wa'da
(the) Promise
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
حَقّٞۖ
haqqun
(is) True
فَلَا
fala
so let not deceive you
تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ
taghurrannakumu
so let not deceive you
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ
al-hayatu
the life
ٱلدُّنۡيَا
al-dun'ya
(of) the world
وَلَا
wala
and let not deceive you
يَغُرَّنَّكُم
yaghurrannakum
and let not deceive you
بِٱللَّهِ
bil-lahi
about Allah
ٱلۡغَرُورُ
al-gharuru
the deceiver
٣٣

People, be mindful of your Lord and fear a day when no parent will take the place of their child, nor a child take the place of their parent, in any way. God’s promise is true, so do not let the present life delude you, nor let the Deceiver delude you about God

31:34
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
عِندَهُۥ
indahu
with Him
عِلۡمُ
il'mu
(is the) knowledge
ٱلسَّاعَةِ
al-sa'ati
(of) the Hour
وَيُنَزِّلُ
wayunazzilu
and He sends down
ٱلۡغَيۡثَ
al-ghaytha
the rain
وَيَعۡلَمُ
waya'lamu
and knows
مَا
ma
what
فِي
fi
(is) in
ٱلۡأَرۡحَامِۖ
al-arhami
the wombs
وَمَا
wama
And not
تَدۡرِي
tadri
knows
نَفۡسٞ
nafsun
any soul
مَّاذَا
madha
what
تَكۡسِبُ
taksibu
it will earn
غَدٗاۖ
ghadan
tomorrow
وَمَا
wama
and not
تَدۡرِي
tadri
knows
نَفۡسُۢ
nafsun
any soul
بِأَيِّ
bi-ayyi
in what
أَرۡضٖ
ardin
land
تَمُوتُۚ
tamutu
it will die
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
عَلِيمٌ
alimun
(is) All-Knower
خَبِيرُۢ
khabirun
All-Aware
٣٤

Knowledge of the Hour [of Resurrection] belongs to God; it is He who sends down the relieving rain and He who knows what is hidden in the womb. No soul knows what it will reap tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die; it is God who is all knowing and all aware

32:2
تَنزِيلُ
tanzilu
(The) revelation
ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ
al-kitabi
(of) the Book
لَا
la
(there is) no
رَيۡبَ
rayba
doubt
فِيهِ
fihi
about it
مِن
min
from
رَّبِّ
rabbi
(the) Lord
ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ
al-'alamina
(of) the worlds
٢

This scripture, free from all doubt, has been sent down from the Lord of the Worlds

Translation 1260

32:3
أَمۡ
am
Or
يَقُولُونَ
yaquluna
(do) they say
ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُۚ
if'tarahu
He invented it
بَلۡ
bal
Nay
هُوَ
huwa
it
ٱلۡحَقُّ
al-haqu
(is) the truth
مِن
min
from
رَّبِّكَ
rabbika
your Lord
لِتُنذِرَ
litundhira
that you may warn
قَوۡمٗا
qawman
a people
مَّآ
ma
not
أَتَىٰهُم
atahum
has come to them
مِّن
min
any
نَّذِيرٖ
nadhirin
warner
مِّن
min
before you
قَبۡلِكَ
qablika
before you
لَعَلَّهُمۡ
la'allahum
so that they may
يَهۡتَدُونَ
yahtaduna
be guided
٣

Yet they say, ‘Muhammad has made it up.’ No indeed! It is the Truth from your Lord for you [Prophet], to warn a people who have had no one to warn them before, so that they may be guided

Translation 1260

32:4
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah
ٱلَّذِي
alladhi
(is) the One Who
خَلَقَ
khalaqa
created
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
al-samawati
the heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ
wal-arda
and the earth
وَمَا
wama
and whatever
بَيۡنَهُمَا
baynahuma
(is) between them
فِي
fi
in
سِتَّةِ
sittati
six
أَيَّامٖ
ayyamin
periods
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
ٱسۡتَوَىٰ
is'tawa
established Himself
عَلَى
ala
on
ٱلۡعَرۡشِۖ
al-'arshi
the Throne
مَا
ma
Not
لَكُم
lakum
for you
مِّن
min
besides Him
دُونِهِۦ
dunihi
besides Him
مِن
min
any
وَلِيّٖ
waliyyin
protector
وَلَا
wala
and not
شَفِيعٍۚ
shafi'in
any intercessor
أَفَلَا
afala
Then will not
تَتَذَكَّرُونَ
tatadhakkaruna
you take heed
٤

It is God who created the heavens and the earth and everything between them in six Days. Then He established Himself on the Throne. You [people] have no one but Him to protect you and no one to intercede for you, so why do you not take heed

32:5
يُدَبِّرُ
yudabbiru
He regulates
ٱلۡأَمۡرَ
al-amra
the affair
مِنَ
mina
of
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
al-samai
the heaven
إِلَى
ila
to
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the earth
ثُمَّ
thumma
then
يَعۡرُجُ
ya'ruju
it will ascend
إِلَيۡهِ
ilayhi
to Him
فِي
fi
in
يَوۡمٖ
yawmin
a Day
كَانَ
kana
(the) measure of which is
مِقۡدَارُهُۥٓ
miq'daruhu
(the) measure of which is
أَلۡفَ
alfa
a thousand
سَنَةٖ
sanatin
years
مِّمَّا
mimma
of what
تَعُدُّونَ
ta'udduna
you count
٥

He runs everything, from the heavens to the earth, and everything will ascend to Him in the end, on a Day that will measure a thousand years in your reckoning

Translation 1260

32:6
ذَٰلِكَ
dhalika
That
عَٰلِمُ
alimu
(is the) Knower
ٱلۡغَيۡبِ
al-ghaybi
(of) the hidden
وَٱلشَّهَٰدَةِ
wal-shahadati
and the witnessed
ٱلۡعَزِيزُ
al-'azizu
the All-Mighty
ٱلرَّحِيمُ
al-rahimu
the Most Merciful
٦

Such is He who knows all that is unseen as well as what is seen, the Almighty, the Merciful

Translation 1260

32:7
ٱلَّذِيٓ
alladhi
The One Who
أَحۡسَنَ
ahsana
made good
كُلَّ
kulla
every
شَيۡءٍ
shayin
thing
خَلَقَهُۥۖ
khalaqahu
He created
وَبَدَأَ
wabada-a
and He began
خَلۡقَ
khalqa
(the) creation
ٱلۡإِنسَٰنِ
al-insani
(of) man
مِن
min
from
طِينٖ
tinin
clay
٧

who gave everything its perfect form. He first created man from clay

32:8
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
جَعَلَ
ja'ala
He made
نَسۡلَهُۥ
naslahu
his progeny
مِن
min
from
سُلَٰلَةٖ
sulalatin
an extract
مِّن
min
of
مَّآءٖ
main
water
مَّهِينٖ
mahinin
despised
٨

then made his descendants from an extract of underrated fluid

Translation 1260

32:9
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
سَوَّىٰهُ
sawwahu
He fashioned him
وَنَفَخَ
wanafakha
and breathed
فِيهِ
fihi
into him
مِن
min
from
رُّوحِهِۦۖ
ruhihi
His spirit
وَجَعَلَ
waja'ala
and made
لَكُمُ
lakumu
for you
ٱلسَّمۡعَ
al-sam'a
the hearing
وَٱلۡأَبۡصَٰرَ
wal-absara
and the sight
وَٱلۡأَفۡـِٔدَةَۚ
wal-afidata
and feelings
قَلِيلٗا
qalilan
little
مَّا
ma
[what]
تَشۡكُرُونَ
tashkuruna
thanks you give
٩

Then He moulded him; He breathed from His Spirit into him; He gave you hearing, sight, and minds. How seldom you are grateful

Translation 1260

32:10
وَقَالُوٓاْ
waqalu
And they say
أَءِذَا
a-idha
Is (it) when
ضَلَلۡنَا
dalalna
we are lost
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the earth
أَءِنَّا
a-inna
will we
لَفِي
lafi
certainly be in
خَلۡقٖ
khalqin
a creation
جَدِيدِۭۚ
jadidin
new
بَلۡ
bal
Nay
هُم
hum
they
بِلِقَآءِ
biliqai
in (the) meeting
رَبِّهِمۡ
rabbihim
(of) their Lord
كَٰفِرُونَ
kafiruna
(are) disbelievers
١٠

They say, ‘What? When we have disappeared into the earth, shall we really be created anew?’ In fact, they deny the meeting with their Lord

32:11
۞قُلۡ
qul
Say
يَتَوَفَّىٰكُم
yatawaffakum
Will take your soul
مَّلَكُ
malaku
(the) Angel
ٱلۡمَوۡتِ
al-mawti
(of) the death
ٱلَّذِي
alladhi
the one who
وُكِّلَ
wukkila
has been put in charge
بِكُمۡ
bikum
of you
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
إِلَىٰ
ila
to
رَبِّكُمۡ
rabbikum
your Lord
تُرۡجَعُونَ
tur'ja'una
you will be returned
١١

Say, ‘The Angel of Death put in charge of you will reclaim you, and then you will be brought back to your Lord.’

وَلَوۡ
walaw
And if
تَرَىٰٓ
tara
you (could) see
إِذِ
idhi
when
ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ
al-muj'rimuna
the criminals
نَاكِسُواْ
nakisu
(will) hang
رُءُوسِهِمۡ
ruusihim
their heads
عِندَ
inda
before
رَبِّهِمۡ
rabbihim
their Lord
رَبَّنَآ
rabbana
Our Lord
أَبۡصَرۡنَا
absarna
we have seen
وَسَمِعۡنَا
wasami'na
and we have heard
فَٱرۡجِعۡنَا
fa-ir'ji'na
so return us
نَعۡمَلۡ
na'mal
we will do
صَٰلِحًا
salihan
righteous (deeds)
إِنَّا
inna
Indeed we
مُوقِنُونَ
muqinuna
(are now) certain
١٢

[Prophet], if only you could see the wrongdoers hang their heads before their Lord: ‘Our Lord, now that we have seen and heard, send us back and we shall do good. [Now] we are convinced.’

Translation 1260

32:13
وَلَوۡ
walaw
And if
شِئۡنَا
shi'na
We (had) willed
لَأٓتَيۡنَا
laatayna
surely We (would) have given
كُلَّ
kulla
every
نَفۡسٍ
nafsin
soul
هُدَىٰهَا
hudaha
its guidance
وَلَٰكِنۡ
walakin
but
حَقَّ
haqqa
(is) true
ٱلۡقَوۡلُ
al-qawlu
the Word
مِنِّي
minni
from Me
لَأَمۡلَأَنَّ
la-amla-anna
that I will surely fill
جَهَنَّمَ
jahannama
Hell
مِنَ
mina
with
ٱلۡجِنَّةِ
al-jinati
the jinn
وَٱلنَّاسِ
wal-nasi
and the men
أَجۡمَعِينَ
ajma'ina
together
١٣

‘If it had been Our will, We could certainly have given every soul its true guidance, but My words have come true. “I shall be sure to fill Hell with jinn and men together.”

Translation 1260

32:14
فَذُوقُواْ
fadhuqu
So taste
بِمَا
bima
because
نَسِيتُمۡ
nasitum
you forgot
لِقَآءَ
liqaa
(the) meeting
يَوۡمِكُمۡ
yawmikum
(of) this Day of yours
هَٰذَآ
hadha
(of) this Day of yours
إِنَّا
inna
Indeed We
نَسِينَٰكُمۡۖ
nasinakum
have forgotten you
وَذُوقُواْ
wadhuqu
And taste
عَذَابَ
adhaba
(the) punishment
ٱلۡخُلۡدِ
al-khul'di
(of) eternity
بِمَا
bima
for what
كُنتُمۡ
kuntum
you used (to)
تَعۡمَلُونَ
ta'maluna
do
١٤

So since you ignored the meeting on this Day of yours, now We shall ignore you: taste the lasting suffering for all you have done.’

Translation 1260

32:15
إِنَّمَا
innama
Only
يُؤۡمِنُ
yu'minu
believe
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا
biayatina
in Our Verses
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
إِذَا
idha
when
ذُكِّرُواْ
dhukkiru
they are reminded
بِهَا
biha
of them
خَرُّواْۤ
kharru
fall down
سُجَّدٗاۤ
sujjadan
prostrating
وَسَبَّحُواْ
wasabbahu
and glorify
بِحَمۡدِ
bihamdi
(the) praises
رَبِّهِمۡ
rabbihim
(of) their Lord
وَهُمۡ
wahum
and they

يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ۩
yastakbiruna
are not arrogant

The only people who truly believe in Our messages are those who, when they are reminded of them, bow down in worship, cele-brate their Lord’s praises, and do not think themselves above this

Translation 1260

32:16
تَتَجَافَىٰ
tatajafa
Forsake
جُنُوبُهُمۡ
junubuhum
their sides
عَنِ
ani
from
ٱلۡمَضَاجِعِ
al-madaji'i
(their) beds
يَدۡعُونَ
yad'una
they call
رَبَّهُمۡ
rabbahum
their Lord
خَوۡفٗا
khawfan
(in) fear
وَطَمَعٗا
watama'an
and hope
وَمِمَّا
wamimma
and out of what
رَزَقۡنَٰهُمۡ
razaqnahum
We have provided them
يُنفِقُونَ
yunfiquna
they spend
١٦

Their sides shun their beds in order to pray to their Lord in fear and hope; they give to others some of what We have given them

Translation 1260

32:17
فَلَا
fala
And not
تَعۡلَمُ
ta'lamu
knows
نَفۡسٞ
nafsun
a soul
مَّآ
ma
what
أُخۡفِيَ
ukh'fiya
is hidden
لَهُم
lahum
for them
مِّن
min
of
قُرَّةِ
qurrati
(the) comfort
أَعۡيُنٖ
a'yunin
(for) the eyes
جَزَآءَۢ
jazaan
(as) a reward
بِمَا
bima
for what
كَانُواْ
kanu
they used (to)
يَعۡمَلُونَ
ya'maluna
do
١٧

No soul knows what joy is kept hidden in store for them as a reward for what they have done

Translation 1260

32:18
أَفَمَن
afaman
Then is one who
كَانَ
kana
is
مُؤۡمِنٗا
mu'minan
a believer
كَمَن
kaman
like (him) who
كَانَ
kana
is
فَاسِقٗاۚ
fasiqan
defiantly disobedient
لَّا
la
Not
يَسۡتَوُۥنَ
yastawuna
they are equal
١٨

So, is someone who believes equal to someone who defies God? No, they are not equal

Translation 1260

32:19
أَمَّا
amma
As for
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
ءَامَنُواْ
amanu
believe
وَعَمِلُواْ
wa'amilu
and do
ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ
al-salihati
righteous deeds
فَلَهُمۡ
falahum
then for them
جَنَّٰتُ
jannatu
(are) Gardens
ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ
al-mawa
(of) Refuge
نُزُلَۢا
nuzulan
(as) hospitality
بِمَا
bima
for what
كَانُواْ
kanu
they used (to)
يَعۡمَلُونَ
ya'maluna
do
١٩

Those who believe and do good deeds will have Gardens awaiting them as their home and as a reward for what they have done

Translation 1260

32:20
وَأَمَّا
wa-amma
But as for
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
فَسَقُواْ
fasaqu
are defiantly disobedient
فَمَأۡوَىٰهُمُ
famawahumu
then their refuge
ٱلنَّارُۖ
al-naru
(is) the Fire
كُلَّمَآ
kullama
Every time
أَرَادُوٓاْ
aradu
they wish
أَن
an
to
يَخۡرُجُواْ
yakhruju
come out
مِنۡهَآ
min'ha
from it
أُعِيدُواْ
u'idu
they (will) be returned
فِيهَا
fiha
in it
وَقِيلَ
waqila
and it (will) be said
لَهُمۡ
lahum
to them
ذُوقُواْ
dhuqu
Taste
عَذَابَ
adhaba
(the) punishment
ٱلنَّارِ
al-nari
(of) the Fire
ٱلَّذِي
alladhi
which
كُنتُم
kuntum
you used (to)
بِهِۦ
bihi
[in it]
تُكَذِّبُونَ
tukadhibuna
deny
٢٠

As for those who defy God, their home will be the Fire. Whenever they try to escape it, they will be driven back into it, and they will be told, ‘Taste the torment of the Fire, which you persistently denied.’

وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُم
walanudhiqannahum
And surely We will let them taste
مِّنَ
mina
of
ٱلۡعَذَابِ
al-'adhabi
the punishment
ٱلۡأَدۡنَىٰ
al-adna
the nearer
دُونَ
duna
before
ٱلۡعَذَابِ
al-'adhabi
the punishment
ٱلۡأَكۡبَرِ
al-akbari
the greater
لَعَلَّهُمۡ
la'allahum
so that they may
يَرۡجِعُونَ
yarji'una
return
٢١

We shall certainly make them taste a nearer torment [in this life] prior to the greater torment, so that perhaps they may return [to the right path]

Translation 1260

32:22
وَمَنۡ
waman
And who
أَظۡلَمُ
azlamu
(is) more unjust
مِمَّن
mimman
than (he) who
ذُكِّرَ
dhukkira
is reminded
بِـَٔايَٰتِ
biayati
of (the) Verses
رَبِّهِۦ
rabbihi
(of) his Lord
ثُمَّ
thumma
then
أَعۡرَضَ
a'rada
he turns away
عَنۡهَآۚ
anha
from them
إِنَّا
inna
Indeed We
مِنَ
mina
from
ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ
al-muj'rimina
the criminals
مُنتَقِمُونَ
muntaqimuna
(will) take retribution
٢٢

Who does more wrong than someone who, when messages from his Lord are recited to him, turns away from them? We shall inflict retribution on the guilty

Translation 1260

32:23
وَلَقَدۡ
walaqad
And certainly
ءَاتَيۡنَا
atayna
We gave
مُوسَى
musa
Musa
ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ
al-kitaba
the Scripture
فَلَا
fala
so (do) not
تَكُن
takun
be
فِي
fi
in
مِرۡيَةٖ
mir'yatin
doubt
مِّن
min
about
لِّقَآئِهِۦۖ
liqaihi
receiving it
وَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ
waja'alnahu
And We made it
هُدٗى
hudan
a guide
لِّبَنِيٓ
libani
for the Children of Israel
إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ
is'raila
for the Children of Israel
٢٣

We gave Moses the Scripture- so [Muhammad] do not doubt that you are receiving it- and We made it a guide for the Children of Israel

Translation 1260

32:24
وَجَعَلۡنَا
waja'alna
And We made
مِنۡهُمۡ
min'hum
from them
أَئِمَّةٗ
a-immatan
leaders
يَهۡدُونَ
yahduna
guiding
بِأَمۡرِنَا
bi-amrina
by Our Command
لَمَّا
lamma
when
صَبَرُواْۖ
sabaru
they were patient
وَكَانُواْ
wakanu
and they were
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا
biayatina
of Our Verses
يُوقِنُونَ
yuqinuna
certain
٢٤

When they became steadfast and believed firmly in Our messages, We raised leaders among them, guiding them according to Our command

Translation 1260

32:25
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
رَبَّكَ
rabbaka
your Lord
هُوَ
huwa
[He]
يَفۡصِلُ
yafsilu
will judge
بَيۡنَهُمۡ
baynahum
between them
يَوۡمَ
yawma
(on the) Day
ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ
al-qiyamati
(of) Resurrection
فِيمَا
fima
in what
كَانُواْ
kanu
they used (to)
فِيهِ
fihi
[in it]
يَخۡتَلِفُونَ
yakhtalifuna
differ
٢٥

[Prophet], it is your Lord who will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning their differences

Translation 1260

32:26
أَوَلَمۡ
awalam
Does it not
يَهۡدِ
yahdi
guide
لَهُمۡ
lahum
[for] them
كَمۡ
kam
(that) how many
أَهۡلَكۡنَا
ahlakna
We have destroyed
مِن
min
before them
قَبۡلِهِم
qablihim
before them
مِّنَ
mina
of
ٱلۡقُرُونِ
al-quruni
the generations
يَمۡشُونَ
yamshuna
they walk about
فِي
fi
in
مَسَٰكِنِهِمۡۚ
masakinihim
their dwellings
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
فِي
fi
in
ذَٰلِكَ
dhalika
that
لَأٓيَٰتٍۚ
laayatin
surely are Signs
أَفَلَا
afala
Then do not
يَسۡمَعُونَ
yasma'una
they hear
٢٦

Is it not a lesson for them [to see] how many generations We destroyed before them, in whose homes they now walk? There truly are signs in this- do they not hear

Translation 1260

32:27
أَوَلَمۡ
awalam
Do not
يَرَوۡاْ
yaraw
they see
أَنَّا
anna
that We
نَسُوقُ
nasuqu
drive
ٱلۡمَآءَ
al-maa
water
إِلَى
ila
to
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the land
ٱلۡجُرُزِ
al-juruzi
[the] barren
فَنُخۡرِجُ
fanukh'riju
then We bring forth
بِهِۦ
bihi
thereby
زَرۡعٗا
zar'an
crops
تَأۡكُلُ
takulu
eat
مِنۡهُ
min'hu
from it
أَنۡعَٰمُهُمۡ
an'amuhum
their cattle
وَأَنفُسُهُمۡۚ
wa-anfusuhum
and they themselves
أَفَلَا
afala
Then do not
يُبۡصِرُونَ
yub'siruna
they see
٢٧

Do they not consider how We drive rain to the barren land, and with it produce vegetation from which their cattle and they themselves eat? Do they not see

Translation 1260

32:28
وَيَقُولُونَ
wayaquluna
And they say
مَتَىٰ
mata
When (will be)
هَٰذَا
hadha
this
ٱلۡفَتۡحُ
al-fathu
decision
إِن
in
if
كُنتُمۡ
kuntum
you are
صَٰدِقِينَ
sadiqina
truthful
٢٨

And they say, ‘When will this Decision be, if you are telling the truth?’

Translation 1260

32:29
قُلۡ
qul
Say
يَوۡمَ
yawma
(On the) Day
ٱلۡفَتۡحِ
al-fathi
(of) the Decision
لَا
la
not
يَنفَعُ
yanfa'u
will benefit
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
كَفَرُوٓاْ
kafaru
disbelieve
إِيمَٰنُهُمۡ
imanuhum
their belief
وَلَا
wala
and not
هُمۡ
hum
they
يُنظَرُونَ
yunzaruna
will be granted respite
٢٩

Say, ‘On the Day of Decision it will be no use for the disbelievers to believe; they will be granted no respite.’

Translation 1260

32:30
فَأَعۡرِضۡ
fa-a'rid
So turn away
عَنۡهُمۡ
anhum
from them
وَٱنتَظِرۡ
wa-intazir
and wait
إِنَّهُم
innahum
Indeed they
مُّنتَظِرُونَ
muntaziruna
(are) waiting
٣٠

So [Prophet], turn away from them and wait: they too are waiting

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
yaayyuha
O Prophet
ٱلنَّبِيُّ
al-nabiyu
O Prophet
ٱتَّقِ
ittaqi
Fear
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
وَلَا
wala
and (do) not
تُطِعِ
tuti'i
obey
ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
al-kafirina
the disbelievers
وَٱلۡمُنَٰفِقِينَۚ
wal-munafiqina
and the hypocrites
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
كَانَ
kana
is
عَلِيمًا
aliman
All-Knower
حَكِيمٗا
hakiman
All-Wise
١

Prophet, be mindful of God and do not give in to the disbelievers and the hypocrites: God is all knowing, all wise

Translation 1260

33:2
وَٱتَّبِعۡ
wa-ittabi'
And follow
مَا
ma
what
يُوحَىٰٓ
yuha
is inspired
إِلَيۡكَ
ilayka
to you
مِن
min
from
رَّبِّكَۚ
rabbika
your Lord
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
كَانَ
kana
is
بِمَا
bima
of what
تَعۡمَلُونَ
ta'maluna
you do
خَبِيرٗا
khabiran
All-Aware
٢

Follow what your Lord reveals to you: God is well aware of all your actions

Translation 1260

33:3
وَتَوَكَّلۡ
watawakkal
And put your trust
عَلَى
ala
in
ٱللَّهِۚ
al-lahi
Allah
وَكَفَىٰ
wakafa
And Allah is sufficient
بِٱللَّهِ
bil-lahi
And Allah is sufficient
وَكِيلٗا
wakilan
(as) Disposer of affairs
٣

Put your trust in God: God is enough to trust

Translation 1260

33:4
مَّا
ma
Not
جَعَلَ
ja'ala
Allah (has) made
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah (has) made
لِرَجُلٖ
lirajulin
for any man
مِّن
min
[of]
قَلۡبَيۡنِ
qalbayni
two hearts
فِي
fi
in
جَوۡفِهِۦۚ
jawfihi
his interior
وَمَا
wama
And not
جَعَلَ
ja'ala
He (has) made
أَزۡوَٰجَكُمُ
azwajakumu
your wives
ٱلَّٰٓـِٔي
allai
whom
تُظَٰهِرُونَ
tuzahiruna
you declare unlawful
مِنۡهُنَّ
min'hunna
[of them]
أُمَّهَٰتِكُمۡۚ
ummahatikum
(as) your mothers
وَمَا
wama
And not
جَعَلَ
ja'ala
He has made
أَدۡعِيَآءَكُمۡ
ad'iyaakum
your adopted sons
أَبۡنَآءَكُمۡۚ
abnaakum
your sons
ذَٰلِكُمۡ
dhalikum
That
قَوۡلُكُم
qawlukum
(is) your saying
بِأَفۡوَٰهِكُمۡۖ
bi-afwahikum
by your mouths
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
but Allah
يَقُولُ
yaqulu
says
ٱلۡحَقَّ
al-haqa
the truth
وَهُوَ
wahuwa
and He
يَهۡدِي
yahdi
guides
ٱلسَّبِيلَ
al-sabila
(to) the Way
٤

God does not put two hearts within a man’s breast. He does not turn the wives you reject and liken to your mothers’ backs into your real mothers; nor does He make your adopted sons into real sons. These are only words from your mouths, while God speaks the truth and guides people to the right path

Translation 1260

33:5
ٱدۡعُوهُمۡ
id'uhum
Call them
لِأٓبَآئِهِمۡ
liabaihim
by their fathers
هُوَ
huwa
it
أَقۡسَطُ
aqsatu
(is) more just
عِندَ
inda
near
ٱللَّهِۚ
al-lahi
Allah
فَإِن
fa-in
But if
لَّمۡ
lam
not
تَعۡلَمُوٓاْ
ta'lamu
you know
ءَابَآءَهُمۡ
abaahum
their fathers
فَإِخۡوَٰنُكُمۡ
fa-ikh'wanukum
then (they are) your brothers
فِي
fi
in
ٱلدِّينِ
al-dini
[the] religion
وَمَوَٰلِيكُمۡۚ
wamawalikum
and your friends
وَلَيۡسَ
walaysa
But not is
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
alaykum
upon you
جُنَاحٞ
junahun
any blame
فِيمَآ
fima
in what
أَخۡطَأۡتُم
akhtatum
you made a mistake
بِهِۦ
bihi
in it
وَلَٰكِن
walakin
but
مَّا
ma
what
تَعَمَّدَتۡ
ta'ammadat
intended
قُلُوبُكُمۡۚ
qulubukum
your hearts
وَكَانَ
wakana
And Allah
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
And Allah
غَفُورٗا
ghafuran
(is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمًا
rahiman
Most Merciful
٥

Name your adopted sons after their real fathers: this is more equitable in God’s eyes––if you do not know who their fathers are [they are your] ‘brothers-in-religion’ and proteges. You will not be blamed if you make a mistake, only for what your hearts deliberately intend; God is most forgiving and merciful

33:6
ٱلنَّبِيُّ
al-nabiyu
The Prophet
أَوۡلَىٰ
awla
(is) closer
بِٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
bil-mu'minina
to the believers
مِنۡ
min
than
أَنفُسِهِمۡۖ
anfusihim
their own selves
وَأَزۡوَٰجُهُۥٓ
wa-azwajuhu
and his wives
أُمَّهَٰتُهُمۡۗ
ummahatuhum
(are) their mothers
وَأُوْلُواْ
wa-ulu
And possessors
ٱلۡأَرۡحَامِ
al-arhami
(of) relationships
بَعۡضُهُمۡ
ba'duhum
some of them
أَوۡلَىٰ
awla
(are) closer
بِبَعۡضٖ
biba'din
to another
فِي
fi
in
كِتَٰبِ
kitabi
(the) Decree
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
مِنَ
mina
than
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
al-mu'minina
the believers
وَٱلۡمُهَٰجِرِينَ
wal-muhajirina
and the emigrants
إِلَّآ
illa
except
أَن
an
that
تَفۡعَلُوٓاْ
taf 'alu
you do
إِلَىٰٓ
ila
to
أَوۡلِيَآئِكُم
awliyaikum
your friends
مَّعۡرُوفٗاۚ
ma'rufan
a kindness
كَانَ
kana
That is
ذَٰلِكَ
dhalika
That is
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ
al-kitabi
the Book
مَسۡطُورٗا
masturan
written
٦

The Prophet is more protective towards the believers than they are themselves, while his wives are their mothers. In God’s Scripture, blood-relatives have a stronger claim than other believers and emigrants, though you may still bestow gifts on your proteges. All this is written in the Scripture

وَإِذۡ
wa-idh
And when
أَخَذۡنَا
akhadhna
We took
مِنَ
mina
from
ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ
al-nabiyina
the Prophets
مِيثَٰقَهُمۡ
mithaqahum
their Covenant
وَمِنكَ
waminka
and from you
وَمِن
wamin
and from
نُّوحٖ
nuhin
Nuh
وَإِبۡرَٰهِيمَ
wa-ib'rahima
and Ibrahim
وَمُوسَىٰ
wamusa
and Musa
وَعِيسَى
wa'isa
and Isa
ٱبۡنِ
ib'ni
son
مَرۡيَمَۖ
maryama
(of) Maryam
وَأَخَذۡنَا
wa-akhadhna
And We took
مِنۡهُم
min'hum
from them
مِّيثَٰقًا
mithaqan
a covenant
غَلِيظٗا
ghalizan
strong
٧

We took a solemn pledge from the prophets- from you [Muhammad], from Noah, from Abraham, from Moses, from Jesus, son of Mary- We took a solemn pledge from all of them

Translation 1260

33:8
لِّيَسۡـَٔلَ
liyasala
That He may ask
ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
al-sadiqina
the truthful
عَن
an
about
صِدۡقِهِمۡۚ
sid'qihim
their truth
وَأَعَدَّ
wa-a'adda
And He has prepared
لِلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
lil'kafirina
for the disbelievers
عَذَابًا
adhaban
a punishment
أَلِيمٗا
aliman
painful
٨

God will question [even] the truthful about their sincerity, and for those who reject the truth He has prepared a painful torment

33:9
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
yaayyuha
O you
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
who
ءَامَنُواْ
amanu
believe
ٱذۡكُرُواْ
udh'kuru
Remember
نِعۡمَةَ
ni'mata
(the) Favor
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
alaykum
upon you
إِذۡ
idh
when
جَآءَتۡكُمۡ
jaatkum
came to you
جُنُودٞ
junudun
(the) hosts
فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا
fa-arsalna
and We sent
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
alayhim
upon them
رِيحٗا
rihan
a wind
وَجُنُودٗا
wajunudan
and hosts
لَّمۡ
lam
not
تَرَوۡهَاۚ
tarawha
you (could) see them
وَكَانَ
wakana
And Allah is
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
And Allah is
بِمَا
bima
of what
تَعۡمَلُونَ
ta'maluna
you do
بَصِيرًا
basiran
All-Seer
٩

You who believe, remember God’s goodness to you when mighty armies massed against you: We sent a violent wind and invisible forces against them. God sees all that you do

Translation 1260

33:10
إِذۡ
idh
When
جَآءُوكُم
jaukum
they came upon you
مِّن
min
from
فَوۡقِكُمۡ
fawqikum
above you
وَمِنۡ
wamin
and from
أَسۡفَلَ
asfala
below
مِنكُمۡ
minkum
you
وَإِذۡ
wa-idh
and when
زَاغَتِ
zaghati
grew wild
ٱلۡأَبۡصَٰرُ
al-absaru
the eyes
وَبَلَغَتِ
wabalaghati
and reached
ٱلۡقُلُوبُ
al-qulubu
the hearts
ٱلۡحَنَاجِرَ
al-hanajira
the throats
وَتَظُنُّونَ
watazunnuna
and you assumed
بِٱللَّهِ
bil-lahi
about Allah
ٱلظُّنُونَا۠
al-zununa
the assumptions
١٠

They massed against you from above and below; your eyes rolled [with fear], your hearts rose into your throats, and you thought [ill] thoughts of God

Translation 1260

33:11
هُنَالِكَ
hunalika
There
ٱبۡتُلِيَ
ub'tuliya
were tried
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ
al-mu'minuna
the believers
وَزُلۡزِلُواْ
wazul'zilu
and shaken
زِلۡزَالٗا
zil'zalan
(with a) shake
شَدِيدٗا
shadidan
severe
١١

There the believers were sorely tested and deeply shaken

Translation 1260

33:12
وَإِذۡ
wa-idh
And when
يَقُولُ
yaqulu
said
ٱلۡمُنَٰفِقُونَ
al-munafiquna
the hypocrites
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhina
and those
فِي
fi
in
قُلُوبِهِم
qulubihim
their hearts
مَّرَضٞ
maradun
(was) a disease
مَّا
ma
Not
وَعَدَنَا
wa'adana
Allah promised us
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah promised us
وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ
warasuluhu
and His messenger
إِلَّا
illa
except
غُرُورٗا
ghururan
delusion
١٢

the hypocrites and the sick at heart said, ‘God and His Messenger promised us nothing but delusions!’

Translation 1260

33:13
وَإِذۡ
wa-idh
And when
قَالَت
qalat
said
طَّآئِفَةٞ
taifatun
a party
مِّنۡهُمۡ
min'hum
of them
يَٰٓأَهۡلَ
yaahla
O People
يَثۡرِبَ
yathriba
(of) Yathrib
لَا
la
No
مُقَامَ
muqama
stand
لَكُمۡ
lakum
for you
فَٱرۡجِعُواْۚ
fa-ir'ji'u
so return
وَيَسۡتَـٔۡذِنُ
wayastadhinu
And asked permission
فَرِيقٞ
fariqun
a group
مِّنۡهُمُ
min'humu
of them
ٱلنَّبِيَّ
al-nabiya
(from) the Prophet
يَقُولُونَ
yaquluna
saying
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
بُيُوتَنَا
buyutana
our houses
عَوۡرَةٞ
awratun
(are) exposed
وَمَا
wama
and not
هِيَ
hiya
they
بِعَوۡرَةٍۖ
bi'awratin
(were) exposed
إِن
in
Not
يُرِيدُونَ
yuriduna
they wished
إِلَّا
illa
but
فِرَارٗا
firaran
to flee
١٣

Some of them said, ‘People of Yathrib, you will not be able to withstand [the attack], so go back!’ Some of them asked the Prophet’s permission to leave, saying, ‘Our houses are exposed,’ even though they were not- they just wanted to run away

33:14
وَلَوۡ
walaw
And if
دُخِلَتۡ

ثُمَّ

سُئِلُواْ
su-ilu
they had been asked
ٱلۡفِتۡنَةَ
al-fit'nata
the treachery
لَأٓتَوۡهَا
laatawha
they (would) have certainly done it
وَمَا
wama
and not
تَلَبَّثُواْ
talabbathu
they (would) have hesitated
بِهَآ
biha
over it
إِلَّا
illa
except
يَسِيرٗا
yasiran
a little
١٤

had the city been invaded from all sides, and the enemy invited them to rebel, they would have done so almost without hesitation

Translation 1260

33:15
وَلَقَدۡ
walaqad
And certainly
كَانُواْ
kanu
they had
عَٰهَدُواْ
ahadu
promised
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
مِن
min
before
قَبۡلُ
qablu
before
لَا
la
not
يُوَلُّونَ
yuwalluna
they would turn
ٱلۡأَدۡبَٰرَۚ
al-adbara
their backs
وَكَانَ
wakana
And is
عَهۡدُ
ahdu
(the) promise
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
(to) Allah
مَسۡـُٔولٗا
masulan
to be questioned
١٥

Yet they had already promised God that they would not turn tail and flee, and a promise to God will be answered for

يَنفَعَكُمُ

ٱلۡفِرَارُ

the fleeing

فَرَرۡتُم

ٱلۡمَوۡتِ

أَوِ

ٱلۡقَتۡلِ
al-qatli
killing
وَإِذٗا
wa-idhan
and then
لَّا

not
تُمَتَّعُونَ
tumatta'una
you will be allowed to enjoy
إِلَّا
illa
except
قَلِيلٗا
qalilan
a little
١٦

[Prophet], say, ‘Running away will not benefit you. If you manage to escape death or slaughter, you will only be permitted to enjoy [life] for a short while.’

Translation 1260

33:17
قُلۡ
qul
Say
مَن
man
Who
ذَا
dha
(is) it that
ٱلَّذِي
alladhi
(is) it that
يَعۡصِمُكُم
ya'simukum
(can) protect you
مِّنَ
mina
from
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
إِنۡ
in
If
أَرَادَ
arada
He intends
بِكُمۡ
bikum
for you
سُوٓءًا
suan
any harm
أَوۡ
aw
or
أَرَادَ
arada
He intends
بِكُمۡ
bikum
for you
رَحۡمَةٗۚ
rahmatan
a mercy
وَلَا
wala
And not
يَجِدُونَ
yajiduna
they will find
لَهُم
lahum
for them
مِّن
min
besides
دُونِ
duni
besides
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
وَلِيّٗا
waliyyan
any protector
وَلَا
wala
and not
نَصِيرٗا
nasiran
any helper
١٧

Say, ‘If God wishes to harm you, who can protect you? If God wishes to show you mercy, who can prevent Him?’ They will find no one but God to protect or help them

Translation 1260

33:18
۞قَدۡ
qad
Verily
يَعۡلَمُ
ya'lamu
Allah knows
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah knows
ٱلۡمُعَوِّقِينَ
al-mu'awiqina
those who hinder
مِنكُمۡ
minkum
among you
وَٱلۡقَآئِلِينَ
wal-qailina
and those who say
لِإِخۡوَٰنِهِمۡ
li-ikh'wanihim
to their brothers
هَلُمَّ
halumma
Come
إِلَيۡنَاۖ
ilayna
to us
وَلَا
wala
and not
يَأۡتُونَ
yatuna
they come
ٱلۡبَأۡسَ
al-basa
(to) the battle
إِلَّا
illa
except
قَلِيلًا
qalilan
a few
١٨

God knows exactly who among you hinder others, who [secretly] say to their brothers, ‘Come and join us,’ who hardly ever come out to fight

Translation 1260

33:19
أَشِحَّةً
ashihhatan
Miserly
عَلَيۡكُمۡۖ
alaykum
towards you
فَإِذَا
fa-idha
But when
جَآءَ
jaa
comes
ٱلۡخَوۡفُ
al-khawfu
the fear
رَأَيۡتَهُمۡ
ra-aytahum
you see them
يَنظُرُونَ
yanzuruna
looking
إِلَيۡكَ
ilayka
at you
تَدُورُ
taduru
revolving
أَعۡيُنُهُمۡ
a'yunuhum
their eyes
كَٱلَّذِي
ka-alladhi
like one who
يُغۡشَىٰ
yugh'sha
faints
عَلَيۡهِ
alayhi
faints
مِنَ
mina
from
ٱلۡمَوۡتِۖ
al-mawti
[the] death
فَإِذَا
fa-idha
But when
ذَهَبَ
dhahaba
departs
ٱلۡخَوۡفُ
al-khawfu
the fear
سَلَقُوكُم
salaqukum
they smite you
بِأَلۡسِنَةٍ
bi-alsinatin
with tongues
حِدَادٍ
hidadin
sharp
أَشِحَّةً
ashihhatan
miserly
عَلَى
ala
towards
ٱلۡخَيۡرِۚ
al-khayri
the good
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ
ulaika
Those
لَمۡ
lam
not
يُؤۡمِنُواْ
yu'minu
they have believed
فَأَحۡبَطَ
fa-ahbata
so Allah made worthless
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
so Allah made worthless
أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡۚ
a'malahum
their deeds
وَكَانَ
wakana
And is
ذَٰلِكَ
dhalika
that
عَلَى
ala
for
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
يَسِيرٗا
yasiran
easy
١٩

who begrudge you [believers] any help. When fear comes, you [Prophet] see them looking at you with eyes rolling like someone in their death throes; when fear has passed, they attack you with sharp tongues and begrudge you any good. Such men do not believe, and God brings their deeds to nothing- that is all too easy for God

Translation 1260

33:20
يَحۡسَبُونَ
yahsabuna
They think
ٱلۡأَحۡزَابَ
al-ahzaba
the confederates
لَمۡ
lam
(have) not
يَذۡهَبُواْۖ
yadhhabu
withdrawn
وَإِن
wa-in
And if
يَأۡتِ
yati
(should) come
ٱلۡأَحۡزَابُ
al-ahzabu
the confederates
يَوَدُّواْ
yawaddu
they would wish
لَوۡ
law
if
أَنَّهُم
annahum
that they (were)
بَادُونَ
baduna
living in (the) desert
فِي
fi
among
ٱلۡأَعۡرَابِ
al-a'rabi
the Bedouins
يَسۡـَٔلُونَ
yasaluna
asking
عَنۡ
an
about
أَنۢبَآئِكُمۡۖ
anbaikum
your news
وَلَوۡ
walaw
And if
كَانُواْ
kanu
they were
فِيكُم
fikum
among you
مَّا
ma
not
قَٰتَلُوٓاْ
qatalu
they would fight
إِلَّا
illa
except
قَلِيلٗا
qalilan
a little
٢٠

They think the joint forces have not gone, and if the joint forces did come again they would wish they were in the desert, wandering among the Bedouin and seeking news about you [from a safe distance]. Even if they were with you [believers], they would hardly fight at all

Translation 1260

33:21
لَّقَدۡ
laqad
Certainly
كَانَ
kana
is
لَكُمۡ
lakum
for you
فِي
fi
in
رَسُولِ
rasuli
(the) Messenger
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
أُسۡوَةٌ
us'watun
an excellent example
حَسَنَةٞ
hasanatun
an excellent example
لِّمَن
liman
for (one) who
كَانَ
kana
has
يَرۡجُواْ
yarju
hope
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
(in) Allah
وَٱلۡيَوۡمَ
wal-yawma
and the Day
ٱلۡأٓخِرَ
al-akhira
the Last
وَذَكَرَ
wadhakara
and remembers
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
كَثِيرٗا
kathiran
much
٢١

The Messenger of God is an excellent model for those of you who put your hope in God and the Last Day and remember Him often

Translation 1260

33:22
وَلَمَّا
walamma
And when
رَءَا
raa
saw
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ
al-mu'minuna
the believers
ٱلۡأَحۡزَابَ
al-ahzaba
the confederates
قَالُواْ
qalu
they said
هَٰذَا
hadha
This
مَا
ma
(is) what
وَعَدَنَا
wa'adana
Allah promised us
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah promised us
وَرَسُولُهُۥ
warasuluhu
and His Messenger
وَصَدَقَ
wasadaqa
and Allah spoke the truth
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
and Allah spoke the truth
وَرَسُولُهُۥۚ
warasuluhu
and His Messenger
وَمَا
wama
And not
زَادَهُمۡ
zadahum
it increased them
إِلَّآ
illa
except
إِيمَٰنٗا
imanan
(in) faith
وَتَسۡلِيمٗا
watasliman
and submission
٢٢

When the believers saw the joint forces, they said, ‘This is what God and His Messenger promised us: the promise of God and His Messenger is true,’ and this only served to increase their faith and submission to God

مِّنَ

Among
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
al-mu'minina
the believers
رِجَالٞ
rijalun
(are) men
صَدَقُواْ
sadaqu
(who) have been true
مَا
ma
(to) what
عَٰهَدُواْ
ahadu
they promised Allah
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
they promised Allah
عَلَيۡهِۖ
alayhi
[on it]
فَمِنۡهُم
famin'hum
And among them
مَّن
man
(is he) who
قَضَىٰ
qada
has fulfilled
نَحۡبَهُۥ
nahbahu
his vow
وَمِنۡهُم
wamin'hum
and among them
مَّن
man
(is he) who
يَنتَظِرُۖ
yantaziru
awaits
وَمَا
wama
And not
بَدَّلُواْ
baddalu
they alter
تَبۡدِيلٗا
tabdilan
(by) any alteration
٢٣

There are men among the believers who honoured their pledge to God: some of them have fulfilled it by death, and some are still waiting. They have not changed in the least

Translation 1260

33:24
لِّيَجۡزِيَ
liyajziya
That Allah may reward
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
That Allah may reward
ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
al-sadiqina
the truthful
بِصِدۡقِهِمۡ
bisid'qihim
for their truth
وَيُعَذِّبَ
wayu'adhiba
and punish
ٱلۡمُنَٰفِقِينَ
al-munafiqina
the hypocrites
إِن
in
if
شَآءَ
shaa
He wills
أَوۡ
aw
or
يَتُوبَ
yatuba
turn in mercy
عَلَيۡهِمۡۚ
alayhim
to them
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
كَانَ
kana
is
غَفُورٗا
ghafuran
Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمٗا
rahiman
Most Merciful
٢٤

[Such trials are ordained] so that God may reward the truthful for their honesty and punish the hypocrites, if He so wills, or He may relent towards them, for God is forgiving and merciful

Translation 1260

33:25
وَرَدَّ
waradda
And Allah turned back
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
And Allah turned back
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
كَفَرُواْ
kafaru
disbelieved
بِغَيۡظِهِمۡ
bighayzihim
in their rage
لَمۡ
lam
not
يَنَالُواْ
yanalu
they obtained
خَيۡرٗاۚ
khayran
any good
وَكَفَى
wakafa
And sufficient is
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
al-mu'minina
(for) the believers
ٱلۡقِتَالَۚ
al-qitala
(in) the battle
وَكَانَ
wakana
and Allah is
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
and Allah is
قَوِيًّا
qawiyyan
All-Strong
عَزِيزٗا
azizan
All-Mighty
٢٥

God sent back the disbelievers along with their rage- they gained no benefit–– and spared the believers from fighting. He is strong and mighty

Translation 1260

33:26
وَأَنزَلَ
wa-anzala
And He brought down
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
ظَٰهَرُوهُم
zaharuhum
backed them
مِّنۡ
min
among
أَهۡلِ
ahli
(the) People
ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ
al-kitabi
(of) the Scripture
مِن
min
from
صَيَاصِيهِمۡ
sayasihim
their fortresses
وَقَذَفَ
waqadhafa
and cast
فِي
fi
into
قُلُوبِهِمُ
qulubihimu
their hearts
ٱلرُّعۡبَ
al-ru'ba
[the] terror
فَرِيقٗا
fariqan
a group
تَقۡتُلُونَ
taqtuluna
you killed
وَتَأۡسِرُونَ
watasiruna
and you took captive
فَرِيقٗا
fariqan
a group
٢٦

He brought those People of the Book who supported them down from their strongholds and put panic into their hearts. Some of them you [believers] killed and some you took captive

Translation 1260

33:27
وَأَوۡرَثَكُمۡ
wa-awrathakum
And He caused you to inherit
أَرۡضَهُمۡ
ardahum
their land
وَدِيَٰرَهُمۡ
wadiyarahum
and their houses
وَأَمۡوَٰلَهُمۡ
wa-amwalahum
and their properties
وَأَرۡضٗا
wa-ardan
and a land
لَّمۡ
lam
not
تَطَـُٔوهَاۚ
tatauha
you (had) trodden
وَكَانَ
wakana
And Allah is
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
And Allah is
عَلَىٰ
ala
on
كُلِّ
kulli
every
شَيۡءٖ
shayin
thing
قَدِيرٗا
qadiran
All-Powerful
٢٧

He passed on to you their land, their houses, their possessions, and a land where you had not set foot: God has power over everything

Translation 1260

33:28
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
yaayyuha
O Prophet
ٱلنَّبِيُّ
al-nabiyu
O Prophet
قُل
qul
Say
لِّأَزۡوَٰجِكَ
li-azwajika
to your wives
إِن
in
If
كُنتُنَّ
kuntunna
you
تُرِدۡنَ
turid'na
desire
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ
al-hayata
the life
ٱلدُّنۡيَا
al-dun'ya
(of) the world
وَزِينَتَهَا
wazinataha
and its adornment
فَتَعَالَيۡنَ
fata'alayna
then come
أُمَتِّعۡكُنَّ
umatti'kunna
I will provide for you
وَأُسَرِّحۡكُنَّ
wa-usarrih'kunna
and release you
سَرَاحٗا
sarahan
(with) a release
جَمِيلٗا
jamilan
good
٢٨

Prophet, say to your wives,‘If your desire is for the present life and its finery, then come, I will make provision for you and release you with kindness

Translation 1260

33:29
وَإِن
wa-in
But if
كُنتُنَّ
kuntunna
you
تُرِدۡنَ
turid'na
desire
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
وَرَسُولَهُۥ
warasulahu
and His Messenger
وَٱلدَّارَ
wal-dara
and the Home
ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ
al-akhirata
(of) the Hereafter
فَإِنَّ
fa-inna
then indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
أَعَدَّ
a'adda
has prepared
لِلۡمُحۡسِنَٰتِ
lil'muh'sinati
for the good-doers
مِنكُنَّ
minkunna
among you
أَجۡرًا
ajran
a reward
عَظِيمٗا
aziman
great
٢٩

but if you desire God, His Messenger, and the Final Home, then remember that God has prepared great rewards for those of you who do good.’

Translation 1260

33:30
يَٰنِسَآءَ
yanisaa
O wives
ٱلنَّبِيِّ
al-nabiyi
(of) the Prophet
مَن
man
Whoever
يَأۡتِ
yati
commits
مِنكُنَّ
minkunna
from you
بِفَٰحِشَةٖ
bifahishatin
immorality
مُّبَيِّنَةٖ
mubayyinatin
clear
يُضَٰعَفۡ
yuda'af
will be doubled
لَهَا
laha
for her
ٱلۡعَذَابُ
al-'adhabu
the punishment
ضِعۡفَيۡنِۚ
di'fayni
two fold
وَكَانَ
wakana
And that is
ذَٰلِكَ
dhalika
And that is
عَلَى
ala
for
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
يَسِيرٗا
yasiran
easy
٣٠

Wives of the Prophet, if any of you does something clearly outrageous, she will be doubly punished- that is easy for God
