يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
yaayyuha
O you
ٱلۡمُزَّمِّلُ
al-muzamilu
who wraps himself

You [Prophet], enfolded in your cloak

Stand
ٱلَّيۡلَ
al-layla
(in) the night
إِلَّا

قَلِيلٗا

Stay up throughout the night, all but a small part of it

(with) measured rhythmic recitation

or a little more; recite the Quran slowly and distinctly

إِنَّا

Indeed We
سَنُلۡقِي
sanul'qi
will cast
عَلَيۡكَ

upon you
قَوۡلٗا

a Word
ثَقِيلًا
thaqilan
heavy

We shall send a momentous message down to you

إِنَّ

Indeed
نَاشِئَةَ
nashi-ata
(the) rising
ٱلَّيۡلِ
al-layli
(at) the night
هِيَ
hiya
it
أَشَدُّ
ashaddu
(is) very hard
وَطۡـٔٗا
watan
and most potent
وَأَقۡوَمُ
wa-aqwamu
and more suitable
قِيلًا
qilan
(for) Word

Night prayer makes a deeper impression and sharpens words––

73:7
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
لَكَ
laka
for you
فِي
fi
in
ٱلنَّهَارِ
al-nahari
the day
سَبۡحٗا
sabhan
(is) occupation
طَوِيلٗا
tawilan
prolonged
٧
you are kept busy for long periods of the day––

73:8
وَٱذۡكُرِ
wa-udh'kuri
And remember
ٱسۡمَ
is'ma
(the) name
رَبِّكَ
rabbika
(of) your Lord
وَتَبَتَّلۡ
watabattal
and devote yourself
إِلَيۡهِ
ilayhi
to Him
تَبۡتِيلٗا
tabtilan
(with) devotion
٨
so celebrate the name of your Lord and devote yourself wholeheart-edly to Him

73:9
رَّبُّ
rabbu
(The) Lord
ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ
al-mashriqi
(of) the east
وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ
wal-maghribi
and the west
لَآ
la
(there is) no
إِلَٰهَ
ilaha
god
إِلَّا
illa
except
هُوَ
huwa
Him
فَٱتَّخِذۡهُ
fa-ittakhidh'hu
so take Him
وَكِيلٗا
wakilan
(as) Disposer of Affairs
٩
He is Lord of the east and west, there is no god but Him, so take Him as your Protector

73:10
وَٱصۡبِرۡ
wa-is'bir
And be patient
عَلَىٰ
ala
over
مَا
ma
what
يَقُولُونَ
yaquluna
they say
وَٱهۡجُرۡهُمۡ
wa-uh'jur'hum
and avoid them
هَجۡرٗا
hajran
an avoidance
جَمِيلٗا
jamilan
gracious
١٠
patiently endure what they say, ignore them politely

73:11
وَذَرۡنِي
wadharni
And leave Me
وَٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ
wal-mukadhibina
and the deniers
أُوْلِي
uli
possessors
ٱلنَّعۡمَةِ
al-na'mati
(of) the ease
وَمَهِّلۡهُمۡ
wamahhil'hum
and allow them respite
قَلِيلًا
qalilan
a little
١١
and leave to Me those who deny the truth and live in luxury. Bear with them for a little while

إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
لَدَيۡنَآ
ladayna
with Us
أَنكَالٗا
ankalan
(are) shackles
وَجَحِيمٗا
wajahiman
and burning fire
١٢
We have fetters, a blazing fire

73:13
وَطَعَامٗا
wata'aman
And food
ذَا
dha
that
غُصَّةٖ
ghussatin
chokes
وَعَذَابًا
wa'adhaban
and a punishment
أَلِيمٗا
aliman
painful
١٣
food that chokes, and agonizing torment in store for them

73:14
يَوۡمَ
yawma
(On the) Day
تَرۡجُفُ
tarjufu
will quake
ٱلۡأَرۡضُ
al-ardu
the earth
وَٱلۡجِبَالُ
wal-jibalu
and the mountains
وَكَانَتِ
wakanati
and will become
ٱلۡجِبَالُ
al-jibalu
the mountains
كَثِيبٗا
kathiban
a heap of sand
مَّهِيلًا
mahilan
pouring down
١٤
on the Day when the earth and the mountains will shake. The mountains will become a heap of loose sand

73:15
إِنَّآ
inna
Indeed We
أَرۡسَلۡنَآ
arsalna
[We] have sent
إِلَيۡكُمۡ
ilaykum
to you
رَسُولٗا
rasulan
a Messenger
شَٰهِدًا
shahidan
(as) a witness
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
alaykum
upon you
كَمَآ
kama
as
أَرۡسَلۡنَآ
arsalna
We sent
إِلَىٰ
ila
to
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
fir'awna
Firaun
رَسُولٗا
rasulan
a Messenger
١٥
We have sent a messenger to you [people] to be your witness, just as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh

73:16
فَعَصَىٰ
fa'asa
But disobeyed
فِرۡعَوۡنُ
fir'awnu
Firaun
ٱلرَّسُولَ
al-rasula
the Messenger
فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُ
fa-akhadhnahu
so We seized him
أَخۡذٗا
akhdhan
(with) a seizure
وَبِيلٗا
wabilan
ruinous
١٦
but Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger and so We inflicted a heavy punishment on him

73:17
فَكَيۡفَ
fakayfa
Then how
تَتَّقُونَ
tattaquna
will you guard yourselves
إِن
in
if
كَفَرۡتُمۡ
kafartum
you disbelieve
يَوۡمٗا
yawman
a Day
يَجۡعَلُ
yaj'alu
(that) will make
ٱلۡوِلۡدَٰنَ
al-wil'dana
the children
شِيبًا
shiban
gray-haired
١٧
So if you disbelieve, how can you guard yourselves against a Day that will turn children’s hair grey

ٱلسَّمَآءُ
al-samau
The heaven
مُنفَطِرُۢ
munfatirun
(will) break apart
بِهِۦۚ
bihi
therefrom
كَانَ
kana
is
وَعۡدُهُۥ
wa'duhu
His Promise
مَفۡعُولًا
maf'ulan
to be fulfilled
١٨
a Day when the sky will be torn apart? God’s promise will certainly be fulfilled

إِنَّ

Indeed
هَٰذِهِۦ
hadhihi
this
تَذۡكِرَةٞۖ
tadhkiratun
(is) a Reminder
فَمَن
faman
then whoever
شَآءَ
shaa
wills
ٱتَّخَذَ
ittakhadha
(let him) take
إِلَىٰ
ila
to
رَبِّهِۦ
rabbihi
his Lord
سَبِيلًا
sabilan
a way
١٩
This is a reminder. Let whoever wishes take the way to his Lord

ثُلُثَيِ

two-thirds
ٱلَّيۡلِ
al-layli
(of) the night
وَنِصۡفَهُۥ
wanis'fahu
and half of it
وَثُلُثَهُۥ
wathuluthahu
and a third of it
وَطَآئِفَةٞ
wataifatun
and (so do) a group
مِّنَ
mina
of
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
مَعَكَۚ
ma'aka
(are) with you
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
And Allah
يُقَدِّرُ
yuqaddiru
determines
ٱلَّيۡلَ
al-layla
the night
وَٱلنَّهَارَۚ
wal-nahara
and the day
عَلِمَ
alima
He knows
أَن
an
that
لَّن
lan
not
تُحۡصُوهُ
tuh'suhu
you count it
فَتَابَ
fataba
so He has turned
عَلَيۡكُمۡۖ
alaykum
to you
فَٱقۡرَءُواْ
fa-iq'rau
so recite
مَا
ma
what
تَيَسَّرَ
tayassara
is easy
مِنَ
mina
of
ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِۚ
al-qur'ani
the Quran
عَلِمَ
alima
He knows
أَن
an
that
سَيَكُونُ
sayakunu
there will be
مِنكُم
minkum
among you
مَّرۡضَىٰ
marda
sick
وَءَاخَرُونَ
waakharuna
and others
يَضۡرِبُونَ
yadribuna
traveling
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the land
يَبۡتَغُونَ
yabtaghuna
seeking
مِن
min
of
فَضۡلِ
fadli
(the) Bounty
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
وَءَاخَرُونَ
waakharuna
and others
يُقَٰتِلُونَ
yuqatiluna
fighting
فِي
fi
in
سَبِيلِ
sabili
(the) way
ٱللَّهِۖ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
فَٱقۡرَءُواْ
fa-iq'rau
So recite
مَا
ma
what
تَيَسَّرَ
tayassara
is easy
مِنۡهُۚ
min'hu
of it
وَأَقِيمُواْ
wa-aqimu
and establish
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ
al-salata
the prayer
وَءَاتُواْ
waatu
and give
ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ
al-zakata
the zakah
وَأَقۡرِضُواْ
wa-aqridu
and loan
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
قَرۡضًا
qardan
a loan
حَسَنٗاۚ
hasanan
goodly
وَمَا
wama
And whatever
تُقَدِّمُواْ
tuqaddimu
you send forth
لِأَنفُسِكُم
li-anfusikum
for yourselves
مِّنۡ
min
of
خَيۡرٖ
khayrin
good
تَجِدُوهُ
tajiduhu
you will find it
عِندَ
inda
with
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
هُوَ
huwa
It
خَيۡرٗا
khayran
(will be) better
وَأَعۡظَمَ
wa-a'zama
and greater
أَجۡرٗاۚ
ajran
(in) reward
وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ
wa-is'taghfiru
And seek forgiveness
ٱللَّهَۖ
al-laha
(of) Allah
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
غَفُورٞ
ghafurun
(is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمُۢ
rahimun
Most Merciful
٢٠
[Prophet], your Lord is well aware that you sometimes spend nearly two-thirds of the night at prayer––sometimes half, sometimes a third––as do some of your followers. God determines the division of night and day. He knows that you will not be able to keep a measure of it and He has relented towards all of you, so recite as much of the Quran as is easy for you. He knows that some of you will be sick, some of you travelling through the land seeking God’s bounty, some of you fighting in God’s way: recite as much as is easy for you, keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and make God a good loan. Whatever good you store up for yourselves will be improved and increased for you. Ask God for His forgiveness, He is most forgiving, most merciful
