12:7

۞لَّقَدۡ

Laq̣ad

Certainly

كَانَ

kaana

were

فِي

fee

يُوسُفَ

yoosufa

Yusuf

وَإِخۡوَتِهِۦٓ

wa-ʹikhwatihee

and his brothers

ءَايَٰتٞ

ʹAayaatul

signs

لِّلسَّآئِلِينَ

lissaaaʹileen.

for those who ask

12:8

إِذۡ

ʹIẓ

When

قَالُواْ

q̣aaloo

they said

لَيُوسُفُ

la-Yoosufu

Surely Yusuf

وَأَخُوهُ

wa-ʹakhoohu

and his brother

أَحَبُّ

ʹaḥabbu

(are) more beloved

إِلَىٰٓ

ʹilaaa

أَبِينَا

ʹabeenaa

our father

مِنَّا

minnaa

than we

وَنَحۡنُ

wa-naḥnu

while we

عُصۡبَةٌ

ʻuṣbah!

(are) a group

إِنَّ

ʹInna

Indeed

أَبَانَا

ʹabaanaa

our father

لَفِي

lafee

(is) surely in

ضَلَٰلٖ

ḍalaalim

an error

مُّبِينٍ

mubeen!

clear

12:9

ٱقۡتُلُواْ

ʹUq̣tuloo

Kill

يُوسُفَ

Yoosufa

Yusuf

أَوِ

ʹawiṭra

ٱطۡرَحُوهُ

ḥoohu

cast him

أَرۡضٗا

ʹarḍañy

(to) a land

يَخۡلُ

yakhlu

so will be free

لَكُمۡ

lakum

for you

وَجۡهُ

wajhu

(the) face

أَبِيكُمۡ

ʹabeekum

(of) your father

وَتَكُونُواْ

wa-takoonoo

and you will be

مِنۢ

mim

after that

بَعۡدِهِۦ

baʻdihee

after that

قَوۡمٗا

q̣awmañ

a people

صَٰلِحِينَ

ṣaaliḥeen!

righteous

12:10

قَالَ

Q̣aala

Said

قَآئِلٞ

q̣aaaʹilum

a speaker

مِّنۡهُمۡ

minhum

among them

لَا

laa-

(Do) not

تَقۡتُلُواْ

taq̣tuloo

kill

يُوسُفَ

Yoosufa

Yusuf

وَأَلۡقُوهُ

wa-ʹalq̣oohu

but throw him

فِي

fee

غَيَٰبَتِ

g̣ayaabatil

the bottom

ٱلۡجُبِّ

jubbi

(of) the well

يَلۡتَقِطۡهُ

yaltaq̣iṭhu

will pick him

بَعۡضُ

baʻḍus

some

ٱلسَّيَّارَةِ

say-yaarati

[the] caravan

إِن

ʹiñ

كُنتُمۡ

kuñtum

you are

فَٰعِلِينَ

faa-ʻileen.

doing

١٠

12:11

قَالُواْ

Q̣aaloo

They said

يَٰٓأَبَانَا

yaaaʹabaanaa

O our father

مَا

maa-

Why

لَكَ

laka

(do) you

لَا

laa-

not

تَأۡمَ۬نَّا

taʹmannaa

trust us

عَلَىٰ

ʻalaa

with

يُوسُفَ

Yoosufa

Yusuf

وَإِنَّا

wa-ʹinnaa

while indeed we

لَهُۥ

lahoo

(are) for him

لَنَٰصِحُونَ

lanaaṣiḥoon?

surely well-wishers

١١

12:12

أَرۡسِلۡهُ

ʹArsilhu

Send him

مَعَنَا

maʻanaa

with us

غَدٗا

g̣adañy

tomorrow

يَرۡتَعۡ

yartaʻwa-

(to) enjoy

وَيَلۡعَبۡ

yalʻab

and play

وَإِنَّا

wa-ʹinnaa

And indeed we

لَهُۥ

lahoo

for him

لَحَٰفِظُونَ

laḥaafiz̤̣oon.

(will) surely (be) guardians

١٢

12:13

قَالَ

Q̣aala

He said

إِنِّي

ʹinnee

Indeed [I]

لَيَحۡزُنُنِيٓ

layaḥzununeee

it surely saddens me

أَن

ʹañ

that

تَذۡهَبُواْ

taẓhaboo

you should take him

بِهِۦ

bihee

you should take him

وَأَخَافُ

wa-ʹakhaafu

and I fear

أَن

ʹañy

that

يَأۡكُلَهُ

yaʹkulahuẓ

would eat him

ٱلذِّئۡبُ

ẓiʹbu

a wolf

وَأَنتُمۡ

wa-ʹañtum

while you

عَنۡهُ

ʻanhu

of him

غَٰفِلُونَ

g̣aafiloon.

(are) unaware

١٣

12:14

قَالُواْ

Q̣aaloo

They said

لَئِنۡ

laʹin

أَكَلَهُ

ʹakalahuẓ

eats him

ٱلذِّئۡبُ

ẓiʹbu

the wolf

وَنَحۡنُ

wa-naḥnu

while we

عُصۡبَةٌ

ʻuṣbatun

(are) a group

إِنَّآ

ʹinnaaa

indeed we

إِذٗا

ʹiẓal

then

لَّخَٰسِرُونَ

lakhaasiroon!

surely (would be) losers

12:15

فَلَمَّا

Falammaa

So when

ذَهَبُواْ

ẓahaboo

they took him

بِهِۦ

bihee

they took him

وَأَجۡمَعُوٓاْ

wa-ʹajmaʻooo

and agreed

أَن

ʹañy

that

يَجۡعَلُوهُ

yajʻaloohu

they put him

فِي

fee

غَيَٰبَتِ

g̣ayaabatil

(the) bottom

ٱلۡجُبِّۚ

jubb:

(of) the well

وَأَوۡحَيۡنَآ

wa-ʹawḥaynaaa

But We inspired

إِلَيۡهِ

ʹilayhi

to him

لَتُنَبِّئَنَّهُم

latunabbiʹannahum̃

Surely you will inform them

بِأَمۡرِهِمۡ

biʹamrihim

about this affair

هَٰذَا

haaẓaa

about this affair

وَهُمۡ

wahum

while they

لَا

laa-

(do) not

يَشۡعُرُونَ

yashʻuroon.

perceive

١٥

12:16

وَجَآءُوٓ

Wa-jaaaʹooo

And they came

أَبَاهُمۡ

ʹabaahum

(to) their father

عِشَآءٗ

ʻishaaaʹañy

early at night

يَبۡكُونَ

yabkoon.

weeping

١٦

12:17

قَالُواْ

Q̣aaloo

They said

يَٰٓأَبَانَآ

yaaaʹabaanaaa

O our father

إِنَّا

ʹinnaa

Indeed we

ذَهَبۡنَا

ẓahabnaa

[we] went

نَسۡتَبِقُ

nastabiq̣u

racing each other

وَتَرَكۡنَا

wa-taraknaa

and we left

يُوسُفَ

Yoosufa

Yusuf

عِندَ

ʻiñda

with

مَتَٰعِنَا

mataaʻinaa

our possessions

فَأَكَلَهُ

faʹakalahuẓ

and ate him

ٱلذِّئۡبُۖ

ẓiʹb.

the wolf

وَمَآ

Wa-maaa

But not

أَنتَ

ʹañta

you

بِمُؤۡمِنٖ

bimuʹminil

(will) believe

لَّنَا

lanaa

وَلَوۡ

wa-law

even if

كُنَّا

kunnaa

we are

صَٰدِقِينَ

ṣaadiq̣een.

truthful

١٧

12:18

وَجَآءُو

Wa-jaaaʹoo

And they brought

عَلَىٰ

ʻalaa

upon

قَمِيصِهِۦ

q̣ameeṣihee

his shirt

بِدَمٖ

bidamiñ

with false blood

كَذِبٖۚ

kaẓib.

with false blood

قَالَ

Q̣aala

He said

بَلۡ

bal

Nay

سَوَّلَتۡ

sawwalat

has enticed you

لَكُمۡ

lakum

has enticed you

أَنفُسُكُمۡ

ʹañfusukum

your souls

أَمۡرٗاۖ

ʹamraa.

(to) a matter

فَصَبۡرٞ

Faṣabruñ

so patience

جَمِيلٞۖ

jameel:

(is) beautiful

وَٱللَّهُ

wallaahul

And Allah

ٱلۡمُسۡتَعَانُ

Mustaʻaanu

(is) the One sought for help

عَلَىٰ

ʻalaa

against

مَا

maa-

what

تَصِفُونَ

taṣifoon.

you describe

١٨

12:19

وَجَآءَتۡ

Wa-jaaaʹat

And there came

سَيَّارَةٞ

sayyaaratuñ

a caravan

فَأَرۡسَلُواْ

faʹarsaloo

and they sent

وَارِدَهُمۡ

waaridahum

their water drawer

فَأَدۡلَىٰ

faʹadlaa

then he let down

دَلۡوَهُۥۖ

dalwah.

his bucket

قَالَ

Q̣aala

He said

يَٰبُشۡرَىٰ

yaa-bushraa

O good news

هَٰذَا

haaẓaa

This

غُلَٰمٞۚ

g̣ulaam!

(is) a boy

وَأَسَرُّوهُ

Wa-ʹasarroohu

And they hid him

بِضَٰعَةٗۚ

biḍaaʻah!

(as) a merchandise

وَٱللَّهُ

Wallaahu

And Allah

عَلِيمُۢ

ʻaleemum

(is) All-Knower

بِمَا

bimaa

of what

يَعۡمَلُونَ

yaʻmaloon!

they do

١٩

12:20

وَشَرَوۡهُ

Wa-sharawhu

And they sold him

بِثَمَنِۭ

bis̤amanim

for a price

بَخۡسٖ

bakhsiñ

very low

دَرَٰهِمَ

daraahima

dirhams

مَعۡدُودَةٖ

maʻdoodah:

few

وَكَانُواْ

wa-kaanoo

and they were

فِيهِ

feehi

about him

مِنَ

minaz

ٱلزَّٰهِدِينَ

zaahideen!

those keen to give up

٢٠

12:21

وَقَالَ

Wa-q̣aalal

And said

ٱلَّذِي

laẓish

the one who

ٱشۡتَرَىٰهُ

taraahu

bought him

مِن

mim

مِّصۡرَ

Miṣra

Egypt

لِٱمۡرَأَتِهِۦٓ

limraʹatiheee

to his wife

أَكۡرِمِي

ʹakrimee

Make comfortable

مَثۡوَىٰهُ

mas̤waahu

his stay

عَسَىٰٓ

ʻasaaa

Perhaps

أَن

ʹañy

that

يَنفَعَنَآ

yañfaʻanaaa

(he) will benefit us

أَوۡ

ʹaw

نَتَّخِذَهُۥ

nattakhiẓahoo

we will take him

وَلَدٗاۚ

waladaa.

(as) a son

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

Wa-kaẓaalika

And thus

مَكَّنَّا

mak-kannaa

We established

لِيُوسُفَ

li-Yoosufa

Yusuf

فِي

fil

ٱلۡأَرۡضِ

ʹarḍi,

the land

وَلِنُعَلِّمَهُۥ

wa-linuʻallimahoo

that We might teach him

مِن

miñ

(the) interpretation of

تَأۡوِيلِ

taʹweelil

(the) interpretation of

ٱلۡأَحَادِيثِۚ

ʹaḥaadees̤.

the events

وَٱللَّهُ

Wallaahu

And Allah

غَالِبٌ

g̣aalibun

(is) Predominant

عَلَىٰٓ

ʻalaaa

over

أَمۡرِهِۦ

ʹamrihee

His affairs

وَلَٰكِنَّ

wa-laakinna

but

أَكۡثَرَ

ʹaks̤aran

most

ٱلنَّاسِ

naasi

(of) the people

لَا

laa

(do) not

يَعۡلَمُونَ

yaʻlamoon.

know

٢١

12:22

وَلَمَّا

Wa-lammaa

And when

بَلَغَ

balag̣a

he reached

أَشُدَّهُۥٓ

ʹashuddahooo

his maturity

ءَاتَيۡنَٰهُ

ʹaataynaahu

We gave him

حُكۡمٗا

ḥukmañw

wisdom

وَعِلۡمٗاۚ

waʻilmaa:

and knowledge

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

wa-kaẓaalika

And thus

نَجۡزِي

najzil

We reward

ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

Muḥsineen.

the good-doers

٢٢

Page 238

12:23

وَرَٰوَدَتۡهُ

Wa-raawadat-hul

And sought to seduce him

ٱلَّتِي

latee

she who

هُوَ

huwa

he (was)

فِي

fee

بَيۡتِهَا

baytihaa

her house

عَن

ʻan

from

نَّفۡسِهِۦ

nafsihee

his self

وَغَلَّقَتِ

wa-g̣allaq̣atil

And she closed

ٱلۡأَبۡوَٰبَ

ʹabwaaba

the doors

وَقَالَتۡ

wa-q̣aalat

and she said

هَيۡتَ

hayta

Come on

لَكَۚ

lak!

you

قَالَ

Q̣aala

He said

مَعَاذَ

maʻaaẓal

I seek refuge in Allah

ٱللَّهِۖ

laahi

I seek refuge in Allah

إِنَّهُۥ

ʹinnahoo

Indeed he

رَبِّيٓ

rabbeee

(is) my lord

أَحۡسَنَ

ʹaḥsana

(who has) made good

مَثۡوَايَۖ

mas̤waay!

my stay

إِنَّهُۥ

Innahoo

Indeed

لَا

laa-

not

يُفۡلِحُ

yufliḥuz̤̣

will succeed

ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ

z̤̣aalimoon!

the wrongdoers

٢٣

12:24

وَلَقَدۡ

Wa-laq̣ad

And certainly

هَمَّتۡ

hammat

she did desire

بِهِۦۖ

bihee

him

وَهَمَّ

wa-hamma

and he would have desired

بِهَا

bihaa

her

لَوۡلَآ

laaa-law

if not

أَن

ʹar

that

رَّءَا

raʹaa

he saw

بُرۡهَٰنَ

burhaana

the proof

رَبِّهِۦۚ

Rabbih:

(of) his Lord

كَذَٰلِكَ

Kaẓaalika

Thus

لِنَصۡرِفَ

linaṣrifa

that We might avert

عَنۡهُ

ʻanhus

from him

ٱلسُّوٓءَ

soooʹa

the evil

وَٱلۡفَحۡشَآءَۚ

wal-faḥshaaaʹ:

and the immorality

إِنَّهُۥ

ʹinnahoo

Indeed he

مِنۡ

min

(was) of

عِبَادِنَا

ʻibaadinal

Our slaves

ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

Mukhlaṣeen.

the sincere

٢٤

12:25

وَٱسۡتَبَقَا

Wastabaq̣al

And they both raced

ٱلۡبَابَ

baaba

(to) the door

وَقَدَّتۡ

wa-q̣addat

and she tore

قَمِيصَهُۥ

q̣ameeṣahoo

his shirt

مِن

miñ

from

دُبُرٖ

duburiñw

the back

وَأَلۡفَيَا

waʹalfayaa

and they both found

سَيِّدَهَا

sayyidahaa

her husband

لَدَا

ladal

ٱلۡبَابِۚ

baab.

the door

قَالَتۡ

Q̣aalat

She said

مَا

maa-

What

جَزَآءُ

jazaaaʹu

(is) the recompense

مَنۡ

man

(of one) who

أَرَادَ

ʹaraada

intended

بِأَهۡلِكَ

biʹahlika

for your wife

سُوٓءًا

soooʹan

evil

إِلَّآ

ʹillaaa

except

أَن

ʹañy

that

يُسۡجَنَ

yusjana

he be imprisoned

أَوۡ

ʹaw

عَذَابٌ

ʻaẓaabun

a punishment

أَلِيمٞ

ʹaleem?

painful

٢٥

12:26

قَالَ

Q̣aala

He said

هِيَ

hiya

She

رَٰوَدَتۡنِي

raawadatnee

sought to seduce me

عَن

ʻan

about

نَّفۡسِيۚ

nafsee

myself

وَشَهِدَ

wa-shahida

And testified

شَاهِدٞ

shaahidum

a witness

مِّنۡ

min

أَهۡلِهَآ

ʹahlihaa:

her family

إِن

ʹiñ

كَانَ

kaana

[is]

قَمِيصُهُۥ

q̣ameeṣuhoo

his shirt

قُدَّ

q̣udda

(is) torn

مِن

miñ

from

قُبُلٖ

q̣ubuliñ

the front

فَصَدَقَتۡ

faṣadaq̣at

then she has spoken the truth

وَهُوَ

wa-huwa

and he

مِنَ

minal

(is) of

ٱلۡكَٰذِبِينَ

kaaẓibeen!

the liars

٢٦

12:27

وَإِن

Wa-ʹiñ

But if

كَانَ

kaana

[is]

قَمِيصُهُۥ

q̣ameeṣuhoo

his shirt

قُدَّ

q̣udda

(is) torn

مِن

miñ

from

دُبُرٖ

duburiñ

(the) back

فَكَذَبَتۡ

fakaẓabat

then she has lied

وَهُوَ

wa-huwa

and he

مِنَ

minaṣ

(is) of

ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ

ṣaadiq̣een!

the truthful

٢٧

12:28

فَلَمَّا

Falammaa

So when

رَءَا

raʹaa

he saw

قَمِيصَهُۥ

q̣ameeṣahoo

his shirt

قُدَّ

q̣udda

torn

مِن

miñ

from

دُبُرٖ

duburiñ

(the) back

قَالَ

q̣aala

he said

إِنَّهُۥ

ʹinnahoo

Indeed it

مِن

miñ

(is) of

كَيۡدِكُنَّۖ

kaydikunna!

your plot

إِنَّ

ʹInna

Indeed

كَيۡدَكُنَّ

kaydakunna

your plot

عَظِيمٞ

ʻaz̤̣eem!

(is) great

٢٨

12:29

يُوسُفُ

Yoosufu

Yusuf

أَعۡرِضۡ

ʹaʻriḍ

turn away

عَنۡ

ʻan

from

هَٰذَاۚ

haaẓaa

this

وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرِي

wastag̣firee

And ask forgiveness

لِذَنۢبِكِۖ

liẓambiki

for your sin

إِنَّكِ

ʹinnaki

Indeed you

كُنتِ

kuñti

are

مِنَ

minal

ٱلۡخَاطِـِٔينَ

khaaṭiʹeen!

the sinful
