One of the 240 subdivisions of the Quran (quarter of a Hizb)

4:12

۞وَلَكُمۡ

Wa-lakum

And for you

نِصۡفُ

niṣfu

(is) half

مَا

maa-

(of) what

تَرَكَ

taraka

(is) left

أَزۡوَٰجُكُمۡ

ʹazwaajukum

by your wives

إِن

ʹil

لَّمۡ

lam

not

يَكُن

yakul

لَّهُنَّ

lahunna

for them

وَلَدٞۚ

walad;

a child

فَإِن

faʹiñ

But if

كَانَ

kaana

لَهُنَّ

lahunna

for them

وَلَدٞ

waladuñ

a child

فَلَكُمُ

falakumur

then for you

ٱلرُّبُعُ

rubuʻu

(is) the fourth

مِمَّا

mimmaa

of what

تَرَكۡنَۚ

tarakna

they left

مِنۢ

mim

from

بَعۡدِ

baʻdi

after

وَصِيَّةٖ

Waṣiyyatiñy

any will

يُوصِينَ

yooṣeena

they have made

بِهَآ

bihaaa

[for which]

أَوۡ

ʹaw

دَيۡنٖۚ

dayn.

any debt

وَلَهُنَّ

Wa-lahunnar

And for them

ٱلرُّبُعُ

rubuʻu

(is) the fourth

مِمَّا

mimmaa

of what

تَرَكۡتُمۡ

taraktum

you left

إِن

ʹil

لَّمۡ

lam

not

يَكُن

yakul

لَّكُمۡ

lakum

for you

وَلَدٞۚ

walad;

a child

فَإِن

faʹiñ

But if

كَانَ

kaana

لَكُمۡ

lakum

for you

وَلَدٞ

waladuñ

a child

فَلَهُنَّ

falahunnas̤

then for them

ٱلثُّمُنُ

s̤umunu

(is) the eighth

مِمَّا

mimmaa

of what

تَرَكۡتُمۚ

taraktum

you left

مِّنۢ

mim

from

بَعۡدِ

baʻdi

after

وَصِيَّةٖ

Waṣiyyatiñ

any will

تُوصُونَ

tooṣoona

you have made

بِهَآ

bihaaa

[for which]

أَوۡ

ʹaw

دَيۡنٖۗ

dayn.

any debt

وَإِن

Wa-ʹiñ

And if

كَانَ

kaana

[is]

رَجُلٞ

rajuluñy

a man

يُورَثُ

yooras̤u

(whose wealth) is to be inherited

كَلَٰلَةً

kalaalatan

(has) no parent or child

أَوِ

ʹawim

ٱمۡرَأَةٞ

raʹatuñw

a women

وَلَهُۥٓ

walahooo

and for him

أَخٌ

ʹakhun

(is) a brother

أَوۡ

ʹaw

أُخۡتٞ

ʹukhtuñ

a sister

فَلِكُلِّ

falikulli

then for each

وَٰحِدٖ

waaḥidim

one

مِّنۡهُمَا

minhumas

of (the) two

ٱلسُّدُسُۚ

sudus;

(is) the sixth

فَإِن

faʹiñ

But if

كَانُوٓاْ

kaanooo

they are

أَكۡثَرَ

ʹaks̤ara

مِن

miñ

than

ذَٰلِكَ

ẓaalika

that

فَهُمۡ

fahum

then they

شُرَكَآءُ

shurakaaʹu

(are) partners

فِي

fis̤

ٱلثُّلُثِۚ

s̤ulus̤i

the third

مِنۢ

mim

from

بَعۡدِ

baʻdi

after

وَصِيَّةٖ

Waṣiyyatiñy

any will

يُوصَىٰ

yooṣaa

was made

بِهَآ

bihaaa

[for which]

أَوۡ

ʹaw

دَيۡنٍ

daynin

any debt

غَيۡرَ

g̣ayra

without

مُضَآرّٖۚ

muḍaarr.

(being) harmful

وَصِيَّةٗ

Waṣiyyatam

An ordinance

مِّنَ

minal

from

ٱللَّهِۗ

laah;

Allah

وَٱللَّهُ

wallaahu

And Allah

عَلِيمٌ

ʻAleemun

(is) All-Knowing

حَلِيمٞ

Ḥaleem.

All-Forbearing

١٢

4:13

تِلۡكَ

Tilka

These

حُدُودُ

Ḥudoodul

(are the) limits

ٱللَّهِۚ

laah:

(of) Allah

وَمَن

wa-mañy

and whoever

يُطِعِ

yuṭiʻil

obeys

ٱللَّهَ

laha

Allah

وَرَسُولَهُۥ

wa-Rasoolahoo

and His Messenger

يُدۡخِلۡهُ

yudkhilhu

He will admit him

جَنَّٰتٖ

Jannaatiñ

(to) Gardens

تَجۡرِي

tajree

flows

مِن

miñ

from

تَحۡتِهَا

taḥtihal

underneath them

ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُ

ʹanhaaru

the rivers

خَٰلِدِينَ

khaalideena

(will) abide forever

فِيهَاۚ

feehaa:

in it

وَذَٰلِكَ

waẓaalikal

And that

ٱلۡفَوۡزُ

fawzul

(is) the success

ٱلۡعَظِيمُ

ʻaz̤̣eem.

[the] great

١٣

4:14

وَمَن

Wa-mañy

And whoever

يَعۡصِ

yaʻṣil

disobeys

ٱللَّهَ

laaha

Allah

وَرَسُولَهُۥ

wa-Rasoolahoo

and His Messenger

وَيَتَعَدَّ

wa-yataʻadda

and transgresses

حُدُودَهُۥ

ḥudoodahoo

His limits

يُدۡخِلۡهُ

yudkhilhu

He will admit him

نَارًا

Naaran

(to) Fire

خَٰلِدٗا

khaalidañ

(will) abide forever

فِيهَا

feehaa:

in it

وَلَهُۥ

wa-lahoo

And for him

عَذَابٞ

ʻaẓaabum

(is) a punishment

مُّهِينٞ

muheen.

humiliating

4:15

وَٱلَّٰتِي

Wallaatee

And those who

يَأۡتِينَ

yaʹteenal

commit

ٱلۡفَٰحِشَةَ

faaḥishata

[the] immorality

مِن

min

from

نِّسَآئِكُمۡ

nisaaaʹikum

your women

فَٱسۡتَشۡهِدُواْ

fastashhidoo

then call to witness

عَلَيۡهِنَّ

ʻalayhinna

against them

أَرۡبَعَةٗ

ʹarbaʻatam

four

مِّنكُمۡۖ

miñkum:

among you

فَإِن

faʹiñ

And if

شَهِدُواْ

shahidoo

they testify

فَأَمۡسِكُوهُنَّ

faʹamsikoohunna

then confine them

فِي

fil

ٱلۡبُيُوتِ

buyooti

their houses

حَتَّىٰ

ḥattaa

until

يَتَوَفَّىٰهُنَّ

yatawaffaahunnal

comes to them

ٱلۡمَوۡتُ

mawtu

[the] death

أَوۡ

ʹaw

يَجۡعَلَ

yajʻalal

makes

ٱللَّهُ

laahu

Allah

لَهُنَّ

lahunna

for them

سَبِيلٗا

sabeelaa.

a way

١٥

4:16

وَٱلَّذَانِ

Wallaẓaani

And the two who

يَأۡتِيَٰنِهَا

yaʹtiyaanihaa

commit it

مِنكُمۡ

miñkum

among you

فَـَٔاذُوهُمَاۖ

faʹaaẓoohumaa.

then punish both of them

فَإِن

Faʹiñ

But if

تَابَا

taabaa

they repent

وَأَصۡلَحَا

wa-ʹaṣlaḥaa

and correct themselves

فَأَعۡرِضُواْ

faʹaʻriḍoo

then turn away

عَنۡهُمَآۗ

ʻanhumaa;

from both of them

إِنَّ

ʹinnal

Indeed

ٱللَّهَ

laaha

Allah

كَانَ

kaana

تَوَّابٗا

Tawwaabar

Oft-Forgiving

رَّحِيمًا

Raḥeemaa.

Most-Merciful

١٦

4:17

إِنَّمَا

ʹInnamat

Only

ٱلتَّوۡبَةُ

tawbatu

the acceptance of repentance

عَلَى

ʻalal

ٱللَّهِ

laahi

Allah

لِلَّذِينَ

lillaẓeena

(is) for those who

يَعۡمَلُونَ

yaʻmaloonas

ٱلسُّوٓءَ

soooʹa

the evil

بِجَهَٰلَةٖ

bijahaalatiñ

in ignorance

ثُمَّ

s̤umma

then

يَتُوبُونَ

yatooboona

they repent

مِن

miñ

from

قَرِيبٖ

q̣areebiñ

soon after

فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ

faʹulaaaʹika

Then those

يَتُوبُ

yatoobul

will have forgiveness

ٱللَّهُ

laahu

(from) Allah

عَلَيۡهِمۡۗ

ʻalayhim:

upon them

وَكَانَ

wa-kaanal

and is

ٱللَّهُ

laahu

Allah

عَلِيمًا

ʻAleeman

All-Knowing

حَكِيمٗا

Ḥakeemaa.

All-Wise

١٧

4:18

وَلَيۡسَتِ

Wa-laysatit

And not

ٱلتَّوۡبَةُ

tawbatu

(is) the acceptance of repentance

لِلَّذِينَ

lillaẓeena

for those who

يَعۡمَلُونَ

yaʻmaloonas

ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ

sayyiʹaati

the evil deeds

حَتَّىٰٓ

ḥattaaa

until

إِذَا

ʹiẓaa

when

حَضَرَ

ḥaḍara

approaches

أَحَدَهُمُ

ʹaḥadahumul

one of them

ٱلۡمَوۡتُ

mawtu

[the] death

قَالَ

q̣aala

he says

إِنِّي

ʹinnee

Indeed I

تُبۡتُ

tubtul

repent

ٱلۡـَٰٔنَ

ʹaana

now

وَلَا

wa-lal

and not

ٱلَّذِينَ

laẓeena

those who

يَمُوتُونَ

yamootoona

die

وَهُمۡ

wa-hum

while they

كُفَّارٌۚ

kuffar:

(are) disbelievers

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ

ʹulaaaʹika

Those

أَعۡتَدۡنَا

ʹaʻtadnaa

We have prepared

لَهُمۡ

lahum

for them

عَذَابًا

ʻaẓaaban

a punishment

أَلِيمٗا

ʹaleemaa.

painful

١٨

4:19

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا

Yaaaʹayyuhal

O you

ٱلَّذِينَ

laẓeena

who

ءَامَنُواْ

ʹaamanoo

believe[d]

لَا

laa-

Not

يَحِلُّ

yaḥillu

(is) lawful

لَكُمۡ

lakum

for you

أَن

ʹañ

that

تَرِثُواْ

taris̤un

you inherit

ٱلنِّسَآءَ

nisaaaʹa

the women

كَرۡهٗاۖ

karhaa.

(by) force

وَلَا

Wa-laa

And not

تَعۡضُلُوهُنَّ

taʻḍuloohunna

you constraint them

لِتَذۡهَبُواْ

litaẓhaboo

so that you may take

بِبَعۡضِ

bibaʻḍi

a part

مَآ

maaa

(of) what

ءَاتَيۡتُمُوهُنَّ

ʹaataytumoohunna

you have given them

إِلَّآ

ʹillaaa

except

أَن

ʹañy

that

يَأۡتِينَ

yaʹteena

they commit

بِفَٰحِشَةٖ

bifaaḥishatim

immorality

مُّبَيِّنَةٖۚ

mubayyinah;

open

وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ

wa-ʻaashiroohunna

And live with them

بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِۚ

bilmaʻroof.

in kindness

فَإِن

Faʹiñ

But if

كَرِهۡتُمُوهُنَّ

karihtumoohunna

you dislike them

فَعَسَىٰٓ

faʻasaaa

then perhaps

أَن

ʹañ

that

تَكۡرَهُواْ

takrahoo

you dislike

شَيۡـٔٗا

shyʹañw

a thing

وَيَجۡعَلَ

wayajʻalal

and has placed

ٱللَّهُ

laahu

Allah

فِيهِ

feehi

in it

خَيۡرٗا

khayrañ

good

كَثِيرٗا

kas̤eeraa.

much

4:20

وَإِنۡ

Wa-ʹin

And if

أَرَدتُّمُ

ʹarattumustib

you intend

ٱسۡتِبۡدَالَ

daala

replacing

زَوۡجٖ

ẓawjim

a wife

مَّكَانَ

makaana

(in) place

زَوۡجٖ

zawjiñw

(of) a wife

وَءَاتَيۡتُمۡ

waʹaataytum

and you have given

إِحۡدَىٰهُنَّ

ʹiḥdaahunna

one of them

قِنطَارٗا

q̣iñṭaarañ

heap (of gold)

فَلَا

falaa

then (do) not

تَأۡخُذُواْ

taʹkhuẓoo

take away

مِنۡهُ

minhu

from it

شَيۡـًٔاۚ

shayʹaa:

anything

أَتَأۡخُذُونَهُۥ

ʹataʹkhuẓoonahoo

Would you take it

بُهۡتَٰنٗا

buhtaanañw

(by) slander

وَإِثۡمٗا

waʹis̤mam

and a sin

مُّبِينٗا

mubeenaa.

4:21

وَكَيۡفَ

Wa-kayfa

And how

تَأۡخُذُونَهُۥ

taʹkhuẓoonahoo

could you take it

وَقَدۡ

wa-q̣ad

when surely

أَفۡضَىٰ

ʹafḍaa

has gone

بَعۡضُكُمۡ

baʻḍukum

one of you

إِلَىٰ

ʹilaa

بَعۡضٖ

baʻḍiñw

another

وَأَخَذۡنَ

waʹakhaẓna

and they have taken

مِنكُم

miñkum

from you

مِّيثَٰقًا

mees̤aaq̣an

covenant

غَلِيظٗا

g̣aleez̤̣aa?

strong

٢١

4:22

وَلَا

Wa-laa

And (do) not

تَنكِحُواْ

tañkiḥoo

marry

مَا

maa-

whom

نَكَحَ

nakaḥa

married

ءَابَآؤُكُم

ʹaabaaaʹukum

your fathers

مِّنَ

minan

ٱلنِّسَآءِ

nisaaaʹi

the women

إِلَّا

ʹillaa

except

مَا

maa-

what

قَدۡ

q̣ad

has

سَلَفَۚ

salaf:

passed before

إِنَّهُۥ

ʹinnahoo

indeed it

كَانَ

kaana

was

فَٰحِشَةٗ

faaḥishatañw

an immorality

وَمَقۡتٗا

wamaq̣tanw

and hateful

وَسَآءَ

wasaaaʹa

and (an) evil

سَبِيلًا

sabeelaa.

٢٢

4:23

حُرِّمَتۡ

Ḥurrimat

Forbidden

عَلَيۡكُمۡ

ʻalaykum

to you

أُمَّهَٰتُكُمۡ

ʹummahaatukum

(are) your mothers

وَبَنَاتُكُمۡ

wa-banaatukum

and your daughters

وَأَخَوَٰتُكُمۡ

wa-ʹakhawaatukum

and your sisters

وَعَمَّٰتُكُمۡ

wa-ʻammaatukum

and your father's sisters

وَخَٰلَٰتُكُمۡ

wa-khaalaatukum

and your mother's sisters

وَبَنَاتُ

wa-banaatul

and daughters

ٱلۡأَخِ

ʹakhi

(of) brothers

وَبَنَاتُ

wa-banaatul

and daughters

ٱلۡأُخۡتِ

ʹukhti

(of) sisters

وَأُمَّهَٰتُكُمُ

wa-ʹummahaatu

and (the) mothers

ٱلَّٰتِيٓ

kumul

who

أَرۡضَعۡنَكُمۡ

laateee

nursed you

وَأَخَوَٰتُكُم

ʹarḍaʻnakum

and your sisters

مِّنَ

wa-ʹakhawaatukum

from

ٱلرَّضَٰعَةِ

minarraḍaaʻati

the nursing

وَأُمَّهَٰتُ

wa-ʹummahaatu

and mothers

نِسَآئِكُمۡ

nisaaaʹikum

(of) your wives

وَرَبَٰٓئِبُكُمُ

wa-rabaaaʹibukumul

and your step daughters

ٱلَّٰتِي

laatee

who

فِي

fee

(are) in

حُجُورِكُم

ḥujoorikum

your guardianship

مِّن

min

نِّسَآئِكُمُ

nisaaaʹikumul

your women

ٱلَّٰتِي

laatee

whom

دَخَلۡتُم

dakhaltum̃

you had relations

بِهِنَّ

bihinn,

with them

فَإِن

faʹil

but if

لَّمۡ

lam

not

تَكُونُواْ

takoonoo

you had

دَخَلۡتُم

dakhaltum̃

relations

بِهِنَّ

bihinna

with them

فَلَا

falaa

then (there is) no

جُنَاحَ

junaaḥa

sin

عَلَيۡكُمۡ

ʻalaykum

on you

وَحَلَٰٓئِلُ

wa-ḥalaaaʹilu

And wives

أَبۡنَآئِكُمُ

ʹabnaaaʹikumul

(of) your sons

ٱلَّذِينَ

laẓeena

those who

مِنۡ

min

(are) from

أَصۡلَٰبِكُمۡ

ʹaṣlaabikum

your loins

وَأَن

wa-ʹañ

and that

تَجۡمَعُواْ

tajmaʻoo

you gather together

بَيۡنَ

baynal

[between]

ٱلۡأُخۡتَيۡنِ

ʹukhtayni

two sisters

إِلَّا

ʹillaa

except

مَا

maa-

what

قَدۡ

q̣ad

has

سَلَفَۗ

salaf;

passed before

إِنَّ

ʹinnal

Indeed

ٱللَّهَ

laaha

Allah

كَانَ

kaana

غَفُورٗا

G̣afoorar

Oft-Forgiving

رَّحِيمٗا

Raḥeemaa:

Most-Merciful

4:12

۞وَلَكُمۡ

And for you
