One of the 240 subdivisions of the Quran (quarter of a Hizb)

38:21

۞وَهَلۡ

Wa-hal

And has (there)

أَتَىٰكَ

ʹataaka

come to you

نَبَؤُاْ

nabaʹul

(the) news

ٱلۡخَصۡمِ

khaṣm?

(of) the litigants

إِذۡ

ʹIẓ

when

تَسَوَّرُواْ

tasawwarul

they climbed over the wall

ٱلۡمِحۡرَابَ

miḥraab;

(of) the chamber

٢١

38:22

إِذۡ

ʹIẓ

When

دَخَلُواْ

dakhaloo

they entered

عَلَىٰ

ʻalaa

upon

دَاوُۥدَ

Daawooda

Dawood

فَفَزِعَ

fafaziʻa

and he was afraid

مِنۡهُمۡۖ

minhum

of them

قَالُواْ

q̣aaloo

they said

لَا

laa-

(Do) not

تَخَفۡۖ

takhaf:

fear

خَصۡمَانِ

khaṣmaani

(We are) two litigants

بَغَىٰ

bag̣aa

has wronged

بَعۡضُنَا

baʻḍunaa

one of us

عَلَىٰ

ʻalaa

بَعۡضٖ

baʻḍiñ

another

فَٱحۡكُم

faḥkum̃

so judge

بَيۡنَنَا

baynanaa

between us

بِٱلۡحَقِّ

bilḥaq̣q̣i

in truth

وَلَا

wa-laa

and (do) not

تُشۡطِطۡ

tushṭiṭ

be unjust

وَٱهۡدِنَآ

wahdinaaa

and guide us

إِلَىٰ

ʹilaa

سَوَآءِ

sawaaaʹiṣ

an even

ٱلصِّرَٰطِ

ṣiraaṭ...

[the] path

٢٢

38:23

إِنَّ

ʹInna

Indeed

هَٰذَآ

haaẓaaa

this

أَخِي

ʹakhee:

(is) my brother

لَهُۥ

lahoo

he has

تِسۡعٞ

tisʻuñw

ninety-nine

وَتِسۡعُونَ

watisʻoona

ninety-nine

نَعۡجَةٗ

naʻjatañw

ewe(s)

وَلِيَ

waliya

while I have

نَعۡجَةٞ

naʻjatuñw

ewe

وَٰحِدَةٞ

waaḥidah:

one

فَقَالَ

faq̣aala

so he said

أَكۡفِلۡنِيهَا

ʹakfilneehaa

Entrust her to me

وَعَزَّنِي

wa-ʻazzanee

and he overpowered me

فِي

fil

ٱلۡخِطَابِ

khiṭaab.

[the] speech

٢٣

38:24

قَالَ

Q̣aala

He said

لَقَدۡ

laq̣ad

Certainly

ظَلَمَكَ

z̤̣alamaka

he has wronged you

بِسُؤَالِ

bisuʹaali

by demanding

نَعۡجَتِكَ

naʻjatika

your ewe

إِلَىٰ

ʹilaa

نِعَاجِهِۦۖ

niʻaajih:

his ewes

وَإِنَّ

wa-ʹinna

And indeed

كَثِيرٗا

kas̤eeram

many

مِّنَ

minal

ٱلۡخُلَطَآءِ

khulaṭaaaʹi

the partners

لَيَبۡغِي

layabg̣ee

certainly oppress

بَعۡضُهُمۡ

baʻḍuhum

some of them

عَلَىٰ

ʻalaa

[on]

بَعۡضٍ

baʻḍin

another

إِلَّا

ʹillal

except

ٱلَّذِينَ

laẓeena

those who

ءَامَنُواْ

ʹaamanoo

believe

وَعَمِلُواْ

wa-ʻamiluṣ

and do

ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ

ṣaaliḥaati

righteous deeds

وَقَلِيلٞ

wa-q̣aleelum

and few

مَّا

maa

(are) they

هُمۡۗ

hum!

(are) they

وَظَنَّ

Wa-z̤̣anna

And became certain

دَاوُۥدُ

Daawoodu

Dawood

أَنَّمَا

ʹannamaa

that

فَتَنَّٰهُ

fatannaahu

We (had) tried him

فَٱسۡتَغۡفَرَ

fastag̣fara

and he asked forgiveness

رَبَّهُۥ

Rabbahoo

(of) his Lord

وَخَرَّۤ

wa-kharra

and fell down

رَاكِعٗاۤ

raakiʻañw

bowing

وَأَنَابَ۩

waʹanaab.

and turned in repentance

٢٤

38:25

فَغَفَرۡنَا

Fag̣afarnaa

So We forgave

لَهُۥ

lahoo

for him

ذَٰلِكَۖ

ẓaalik:

that

وَإِنَّ

wa-ʹinna

And indeed

لَهُۥ

lahoo

for him

عِندَنَا

ʻiñdanaa

with Us

لَزُلۡفَىٰ

lazulfaa

surely is a near access

وَحُسۡنَ

wa-ḥusna

and a good

مَـَٔابٖ

maʹaab.

place of return

٢٥

38:26

يَٰدَاوُۥدُ

Yaa-Daawoodu

O Dawood

إِنَّا

ʹinnaa

Indeed We

جَعَلۡنَٰكَ

jaʻalnaaka

[We] have made you

خَلِيفَةٗ

Khaleefatañ

a vicegerent

فِي

fil

ٱلۡأَرۡضِ

ʹarḍi

the earth

فَٱحۡكُم

faḥkum̃

so judge

بَيۡنَ

baynan

between

ٱلنَّاسِ

naasi

[the] men

بِٱلۡحَقِّ

bilḥaq̣q̣i

in truth

وَلَا

wa-laa

and (do) not

تَتَّبِعِ

tattabiʻil

ٱلۡهَوَىٰ

hawaa

the desire

فَيُضِلَّكَ

fayuḍillaka

for it will lead you astray

عَن

ʻañ

from

سَبِيلِ

Sabeelil

(the) way

ٱللَّهِۚ

laah:

(of) Allah

إِنَّ

ʹinnal

Indeed

ٱلَّذِينَ

laẓeena

those who

يَضِلُّونَ

yaḍilloona

go astray

عَن

ʻañ

from

سَبِيلِ

Sabeelil

(the) way

ٱللَّهِ

laahi

(of) Allah

لَهُمۡ

lahum

for them

عَذَابٞ

ʻaẓaabuñ

(is) a punishment

شَدِيدُۢ

shadeedum

severe

بِمَا

bimaa

because

نَسُواْ

nasoo

they forgot

يَوۡمَ

Yawmal

(the) Day

ٱلۡحِسَابِ

Ḥisaab.

(of) Account

38:27

وَمَا

Wa-maa

And not

خَلَقۡنَا

khalaq̣nas

We created

ٱلسَّمَآءَ

samaaaʹa

the heaven

وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ

wal-ʹarḍa

and the earth

وَمَا

wa-maa

and whatever

بَيۡنَهُمَا

baynahumaa

(is) between them

بَٰطِلٗاۚ

baaṭilaa!

without purpose

ذَٰلِكَ

Ẓaalika

That

ظَنُّ

z̤̣annul

(is the) assumption

ٱلَّذِينَ

laẓeena

(of) those who

كَفَرُواْۚ

kafaroo!

disbelieve

فَوَيۡلٞ

Fawaylul

So woe

لِّلَّذِينَ

lil-laẓeena

to those

كَفَرُواْ

kafaroo

who disbelieve

مِنَ

minan

from

ٱلنَّارِ

Naar!

the Fire

٢٧

38:28

أَمۡ

ʹAm

نَجۡعَلُ

najʻalul

should We treat

ٱلَّذِينَ

laẓeena

those who

ءَامَنُواْ

ʹaamanoo

believe

وَعَمِلُواْ

wa-ʻamiluṣ

and do

ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ

ṣaaliḥaati

righteous deeds

كَٱلۡمُفۡسِدِينَ

kalmufsideena

like those who spread corruption

فِي

fil

ٱلۡأَرۡضِ

ʹarḍ?

the earth

أَمۡ

ʹAm

نَجۡعَلُ

najʻalul

should We treat

ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ

muttaq̣eena

the pious

كَٱلۡفُجَّارِ

kalfujjaar?

like the wicked

٢٨

38:29

كِتَٰبٌ

Kitaabun

(This is) a Book

أَنزَلۡنَٰهُ

ʹañzalnaahu

We have revealed it

إِلَيۡكَ

ʹilayka

to you

مُبَٰرَكٞ

mubaarakul

blessed

لِّيَدَّبَّرُوٓاْ

liyaddabbarooo

that they may ponder

ءَايَٰتِهِۦ

ʹAayaatihee

(over) its Verses

وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ

wa-liyataẓakkara

and may be reminded

أُوْلُواْ

ʹulul

those of understanding

ٱلۡأَلۡبَٰبِ

ʹalbaab.

those of understanding

٢٩

38:30

وَوَهَبۡنَا

Wa-wahabnaa

And We gave

لِدَاوُۥدَ

li-Daawooda

to Dawood

سُلَيۡمَٰنَۚ

Sulaymaan:

Sulaiman

نِعۡمَ

niʻmal

an excellent

ٱلۡعَبۡدُ

ʻAbd!

slave

إِنَّهُۥٓ

ʹInnahooo

Indeed he

أَوَّابٌ

ʹawwaab!

(was) one who repeatedly turned

٣٠

38:31

إِذۡ

ʹIẓ

When

عُرِضَ

ʻuriḍa

were displayed

عَلَيۡهِ

ʻalayhi

to him

بِٱلۡعَشِيِّ

bilʻashiyyiṣ

in the afternoon

ٱلصَّٰفِنَٰتُ

ṣaafinaatul

excellent bred steeds

ٱلۡجِيَادُ

jiyaad;

excellent bred steeds

٣١

38:32

فَقَالَ

Faq̣aala

And he said

إِنِّيٓ

ʹinneee

Indeed I

أَحۡبَبۡتُ

ʹaḥbabtu

[I] preferred

حُبَّ

ḥubbal

(the) love

ٱلۡخَيۡرِ

khayri

(of) the good

عَن

ʻañ

over

ذِكۡرِ

ẓikri

(the) remembrance

رَبِّي

Rabbee,―

(of) my Lord

حَتَّىٰ

ḥattaa

Until

تَوَارَتۡ

tawaarat

they were hidden

بِٱلۡحِجَابِ

bilḥijaab:

in the veil

٣٢

38:33

رُدُّوهَا

Ruddoohaa

Return them

عَلَيَّۖ

ʻalayy.

to me

فَطَفِقَ

faṭafiq̣a

Then he began

مَسۡحَۢا

mas-ḥam

(to) pass (his hand)

بِٱلسُّوقِ

bissooq̣i

over the legs

وَٱلۡأَعۡنَاقِ

wal-ʹaʻnaaq̣.

and the necks

٣٣

38:34

وَلَقَدۡ

Wa-laq̣ad

And certainly

فَتَنَّا

fatannaa

We tried

سُلَيۡمَٰنَ

Sulaymaana

Sulaiman

وَأَلۡقَيۡنَا

wa-ʹalq̣aynaa

and We placed

عَلَىٰ

ʻalaa

كُرۡسِيِّهِۦ

kursiyyihee

his throne

جَسَدٗا

jasadañ

a body

ثُمَّ

s̤umma

then

أَنَابَ

ʹanaab:

he turned

٣٤

38:35

قَالَ

Q̣aala

He said

رَبِّ

Rabbig̣

O my Lord

ٱغۡفِرۡ

fir

Forgive

لِي

lee

وَهَبۡ

wa-hab

and grant

لِي

lee

مُلۡكٗا

Mulkal

a kingdom

لَّا

laa

not

يَنۢبَغِي

yambag̣ee

(will) belong

لِأَحَدٖ

liʹaḥadim

to anyone

مِّنۢ

mim

after me

بَعۡدِيٓۖ

baʻdee:

after me

إِنَّكَ

ʹinnaka

Indeed You

أَنتَ

ʹAñtal

[You]

ٱلۡوَهَّابُ

Wahhaab.

(are) the Bestower

٣٥

38:36

فَسَخَّرۡنَا

Fasakhkharnaa

Then We subjected

لَهُ

lahur

to him

ٱلرِّيحَ

Reeḥa

the wind

تَجۡرِي

tajree

to flow

بِأَمۡرِهِۦ

biʹamrihee

by his command

رُخَآءً

rukhaaaʹan

gently

حَيۡثُ

ḥays̤u

wherever

أَصَابَ

ʹaṣaab,―

he directed

٣٦

38:37

وَٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ

Washshayaaṭeena

And the devils

كُلَّ

kulla

every

بَنَّآءٖ

bannaaaʹiñw

builder

وَغَوَّاصٖ

wag̣awwaaṣ,―

and diver

٣٧

38:38

وَءَاخَرِينَ

Wa-ʹaakhareena

And others

مُقَرَّنِينَ

muq̣arraneena

bound

فِي

fil

ٱلۡأَصۡفَادِ

ʹaṣfaad.

chains

٣٨

38:39

هَٰذَا

Haaẓaa

This

عَطَآؤُنَا

ʻAṭaaaʹunaa

(is) Our gift

فَٱمۡنُنۡ

famnun

so grant

أَوۡ

ʹaw

أَمۡسِكۡ

ʹamsik

withhold

بِغَيۡرِ

big̣ayri

without

حِسَابٖ

ḥisaab.

account

٣٩

38:40

وَإِنَّ

Wa-ʹinna

And indeed

لَهُۥ

lahoo

for him

عِندَنَا

ʻiñdanaa

with Us

لَزُلۡفَىٰ

lazulfaa

surely is a near access

وَحُسۡنَ

waḥusna

and a good

مَـَٔابٖ

maʹaab.

place of return

٤٠

38:41

وَٱذۡكُرۡ

Waẓkur

And remember

عَبۡدَنَآ

ʻAbdanaaa

Our slave

أَيُّوبَ

ʹAyyoob.

Ayyub

إِذۡ

ʹIẓ

when

نَادَىٰ

naadaa

he called

رَبَّهُۥٓ

Rabbahooo

his Lord

أَنِّي

ʹannee

That [I]

مَسَّنِيَ

massaniyash

(has) touched me

ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ

shayṭaanu

Shaitaan

بِنُصۡبٖ

binuṣbiñw

with distress

وَعَذَابٍ

waʻaẓaab!

and suffering

٤١

38:42

ٱرۡكُضۡ

ʹUrkuḍ

Strike

بِرِجۡلِكَۖ

birijlik:

with your foot

هَٰذَا

haaẓaa

This

مُغۡتَسَلُۢ

mug̣tasalum

(is a spring of) water to bathe

بَارِدٞ

baariduñw

cool

وَشَرَابٞ

washaraab.

and a drink

38:43

وَوَهَبۡنَا

Wa-wahabnaa

And We granted

لَهُۥٓ

lahooo

[to] him

أَهۡلَهُۥ

ʹahlahoo

his family

وَمِثۡلَهُم

wa-mis̤lahum

and a like of them

مَّعَهُمۡ

maʻahum

with them

رَحۡمَةٗ

Raḥmatam

a Mercy

مِّنَّا

minnaa

from Us

وَذِكۡرَىٰ

wa-ẓikraa

and a Reminder

لِأُوْلِي

liʹUlil

for those of understanding

ٱلۡأَلۡبَٰبِ

ʹalbaab.

for those of understanding

٤٣

38:44

وَخُذۡ

Wa-khuẓ

And take

بِيَدِكَ

biyadika

in your hand

ضِغۡثٗا

ḍig̣s̤añ

a bunch

فَٱضۡرِب

faḍrib

and strike

بِّهِۦ

bihee

with it

وَلَا

wa-laa

and (do) not

تَحۡنَثۡۗ

taḥnas̤.

break (your) oath

إِنَّا

ʹInnaa

Indeed We

وَجَدۡنَٰهُ

wa-jadnaahu

[We] found him

صَابِرٗاۚ

ṣaabiraa.

patient

نِّعۡمَ

Niʻmal

an excellent

ٱلۡعَبۡدُ

ʻAbd!

slave

إِنَّهُۥٓ

ʹInnahooo

Indeed he

أَوَّابٞ

ʹawwaab!

repeatedly turned

٤٤

38:45

وَٱذۡكُرۡ

Waẓkur

And remember

عِبَٰدَنَآ

ʻIbaadanaaa

Our slaves

إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ

ʹIbraaheema

Ibrahim

وَإِسۡحَٰقَ

wa-ʹIsḥaaq̣a

and Isaac

وَيَعۡقُوبَ

wa-Yaʻq̣ooba

and Yaqub

أُوْلِي

ʹUlil

possessors

ٱلۡأَيۡدِي

ʹAydee

(of) strength

وَٱلۡأَبۡصَٰرِ

walʹAbṣaar.

and vision

٤٥
