Al-Anfal 8:40

8:26
وَٱذۡكُرُوٓاْ
wa-udh'kuru
And remember
إِذۡ
idh
when
أَنتُمۡ
antum
you
قَلِيلٞ
qalilun
(were) few
مُّسۡتَضۡعَفُونَ
mus'tad'afuna
(and) deemed weak
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the earth
تَخَافُونَ
takhafuna
fearing
أَن
an
that
يَتَخَطَّفَكُمُ
yatakhattafakumu
might do away with you
ٱلنَّاسُ
al-nasu
the men
فَـَٔاوَىٰكُمۡ
faawakum
then He sheltered you
وَأَيَّدَكُم
wa-ayyadakum
and strengthened you
بِنَصۡرِهِۦ
binasrihi
with His help
وَرَزَقَكُم
warazaqakum
and provided you
مِّنَ
mina
of
ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِ
al-tayibati
the good things
لَعَلَّكُمۡ
la'allakum
so that you may
تَشۡكُرُونَ
tashkuruna
(be) thankful
٢٦

Remember when you were few, victimized in the land, afraid that people might catch you, but God sheltered you and strengthened you with His help, and provided you with good things so that you might be grateful

Translation 1260

8:27
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
yaayyuha
O you
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
who
ءَامَنُواْ
amanu
believe
لَا
la
(Do) not
تَخُونُواْ
takhunu
betray
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
وَٱلرَّسُولَ
wal-rasula
and the Messenger
وَتَخُونُوٓاْ
watakhunu
or betray
أَمَٰنَٰتِكُمۡ
amanatikum
your trusts
وَأَنتُمۡ
wa-antum
while you
تَعۡلَمُونَ
ta'lamuna
know
٢٧

Believers, do not betray God and the Messenger, or knowingly betray [other people’s] trust in you

Translation 1260

8:28
وَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ
wa-i'lamu
And know
أَنَّمَآ
annama
that
أَمۡوَٰلُكُمۡ
amwalukum
your wealth
وَأَوۡلَٰدُكُمۡ
wa-awladukum
and your children
فِتۡنَةٞ
fit'natun
(are) a trial
وَأَنَّ
wa-anna
And that
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
عِندَهُۥٓ
indahu
with Him
أَجۡرٌ
ajrun
(is) a reward
عَظِيمٞ
azimun
great
٢٨

Be aware that your possessions and your children are only a test, and that there is a tremendous reward with God

Translation 1260

8:29
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
yaayyuha
O you
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
who
ءَامَنُوٓاْ
amanu
believe
إِن
in
If
تَتَّقُواْ
tattaqu
you fear
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
يَجۡعَل
yaj'al
He will grant
لَّكُمۡ
lakum
you
فُرۡقَانٗا
fur'qanan
a criterion
وَيُكَفِّرۡ
wayukaffir
and will remove
عَنكُمۡ
ankum
from you
سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمۡ
sayyiatikum
your evil deeds
وَيَغۡفِرۡ
wayaghfir
and forgive
لَكُمۡۗ
lakum
you
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
And Allah
ذُو
dhu
(is) the Possessor
ٱلۡفَضۡلِ
al-fadli
(of) Bounty
ٱلۡعَظِيمِ
al-'azimi
the Great
٢٩

Believers, if you remain mindful of God, He will give you a criterion [to tell right from wrong] and wipe out your bad deeds, and forgive you: God’s favour is great indeed

Translation 1260

8:30
وَإِذۡ
wa-idh
And when
يَمۡكُرُ
yamkuru
plotted
بِكَ
bika
against you
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
كَفَرُواْ
kafaru
disbelieved
لِيُثۡبِتُوكَ
liyuth'bituka
that they restrain you
أَوۡ
aw
or
يَقۡتُلُوكَ
yaqtuluka
kill you
أَوۡ
aw
or
يُخۡرِجُوكَۚ
yukh'rijuka
drive you out
وَيَمۡكُرُونَ
wayamkuruna
And they were planning
وَيَمۡكُرُ
wayamkuru
and (also) was planning
ٱللَّهُۖ
al-lahu
Allah
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
And Allah
خَيۡرُ
khayru
is (the) Best
ٱلۡمَٰكِرِينَ
al-makirina
(of) the Planners
٣٠

Remember [Prophet] when the disbelievers plotted to take you captive, kill, or expel you. They schemed and so did God: He is the best of schemers

Translation 1260

8:31
وَإِذَا
wa-idha
And when
تُتۡلَىٰ
tut'la
are recited
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
alayhim
to them
ءَايَٰتُنَا
ayatuna
Our Verses
قَالُواْ
qalu
they say
قَدۡ
qad
Verily
سَمِعۡنَا
sami'na
we have heard
لَوۡ
law
if
نَشَآءُ
nashau
we wish
لَقُلۡنَا
laqul'na
surely we could say
مِثۡلَ
mith'la
like
هَٰذَآ
hadha
this
إِنۡ
in
Not
هَٰذَآ
hadha
is this
إِلَّآ
illa
but
أَسَٰطِيرُ
asatiru
tales
ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ
al-awalina
(of) the former (people)
٣١

Whenever Our Revelation is recited to them they say, ‘We have heard all this before- we could say something like this if we wanted- this is nothing but ancient fables.’

Translation 1260

8:32
وَإِذۡ
wa-idh
And when
قَالُواْ
qalu
they said
ٱللَّهُمَّ
al-lahuma
O Allah
إِن
in
If
كَانَ
kana
was
هَٰذَا
hadha
this
هُوَ
huwa
[it]
ٱلۡحَقَّ
al-haqa
the truth
مِنۡ
min
[of]
عِندِكَ
indika
from You
فَأَمۡطِرۡ
fa-amtir
then (send) rain
عَلَيۡنَا
alayna
upon us
حِجَارَةٗ
hijaratan
(of) stones
مِّنَ
mina
from
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
al-samai
the sky
أَوِ
awi
or
ٱئۡتِنَا
i'tina
bring (upon) us
بِعَذَابٍ
bi'adhabin
a punishment
أَلِيمٖ
alimin
painful
٣٢

They also said, ‘God, if this really is the truth from You, then rain stones on us from the heavens, or send us some other painful punishment.’

Translation 1260

8:33
وَمَا
wama
But not
كَانَ
kana
is
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
(for) Allah
لِيُعَذِّبَهُمۡ
liyu'adhibahum
that He punishes them
وَأَنتَ
wa-anta
while you
فِيهِمۡۚ
fihim
(are) among them
وَمَا
wama
and not
كَانَ
kana
is
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah
مُعَذِّبَهُمۡ
mu'adhibahum
the One Who punishes them
وَهُمۡ
wahum
while they
يَسۡتَغۡفِرُونَ
yastaghfiruna
seek forgiveness
٣٣

But God would not send them punishment while you [Prophet] are in their midst, nor would He punish them if they sought forgiveness

8:34
وَمَا
wama
But what
لَهُمۡ
lahum
(is) for them
أَلَّا
alla
that not
يُعَذِّبَهُمُ
yu'adhibahumu
(should) punish them
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah
وَهُمۡ
wahum
while they
يَصُدُّونَ
yasudduna
hinder (people)
عَنِ
ani
from
ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ
al-masjidi
Al-Masjid
ٱلۡحَرَامِ
al-harami
Al-Haraam
وَمَا
wama
while not
كَانُوٓاْ
kanu
they are
أَوۡلِيَآءَهُۥٓۚ
awliyaahu
its guardians
إِنۡ
in
Not (can be)
أَوۡلِيَآؤُهُۥٓ
awliyauhu
its guardians
إِلَّا
illa
except
ٱلۡمُتَّقُونَ
al-mutaquna
the ones who fear Allah
وَلَٰكِنَّ
walakinna
but
أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ
aktharahum
most of them
لَا
la
(do) not
يَعۡلَمُونَ
ya'lamuna
know
٣٤

yet why should God not punish them when they debar people from the Sacred Mosque, although they are not its [rightful] guardians? Only those mindful of God are its rightful guardians, but most of the disbelievers do not realize this

Translation 1260

8:35
وَمَا
wama
And not
كَانَ
kana
was
صَلَاتُهُمۡ
salatuhum
their prayer
عِندَ
inda
at
ٱلۡبَيۡتِ
al-bayti
the House
إِلَّا
illa
except
مُكَآءٗ
mukaan
whistling
وَتَصۡدِيَةٗۚ
watasdiyatan
and clapping
فَذُوقُواْ
fadhuqu
So taste
ٱلۡعَذَابَ
al-'adhaba
the punishment
بِمَا
bima
because
كُنتُمۡ
kuntum
you used to
تَكۡفُرُونَ
takfuruna
disbelieve
٣٥

Their prayers before the House are nothing but whistling and clapping. ‘So taste the punishment for your disbelief.’

Translation 1260

8:36
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
كَفَرُواْ
kafaru
disbelieve
يُنفِقُونَ
yunfiquna
they spend
أَمۡوَٰلَهُمۡ
amwalahum
their wealth
لِيَصُدُّواْ
liyasuddu
to hinder (people)
عَن
an
from
سَبِيلِ
sabili
(the) way
ٱللَّهِۚ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
فَسَيُنفِقُونَهَا
fasayunfiqunaha
So they will spend it
ثُمَّ
thumma
then
تَكُونُ
takunu
it will be
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
alayhim
for them
حَسۡرَةٗ
hasratan
a regret
ثُمَّ
thumma
then
يُغۡلَبُونَۗ
yugh'labuna
they will be overcome
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhina
And those who
كَفَرُوٓاْ
kafaru
disbelieve
إِلَىٰ
ila
to
جَهَنَّمَ
jahannama
Hell
يُحۡشَرُونَ
yuh'sharuna
they will be gathered
٣٦

They use their wealth to bar people from the path of God, and they will go on doing so. In the end this will be a source of intense regret for them: they will be overcome and herded towards Hell

8:37
لِيَمِيزَ
liyamiza
That may distinguish
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah
ٱلۡخَبِيثَ
al-khabitha
the wicked
مِنَ
mina
from
ٱلطَّيِّبِ
al-tayibi
the good
وَيَجۡعَلَ
wayaj'ala
and place
ٱلۡخَبِيثَ
al-khabitha
the wicked
بَعۡضَهُۥ
ba'dahu
some of them
عَلَىٰ
ala
on
بَعۡضٖ
ba'din
others
فَيَرۡكُمَهُۥ
fayarkumahu
and heap them
جَمِيعٗا
jami'an
all together
فَيَجۡعَلَهُۥ
fayaj'alahu
and put them
فِي
fi
in
جَهَنَّمَۚ
jahannama
Hell
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ
ulaika
Those
هُمُ
humu
they
ٱلۡخَٰسِرُونَ
al-khasiruna
(are) the losers
٣٧

God will separate the bad from the good, place the bad on top of one another- heaping them all up together- and put them in Hell. They will be the losers

Translation 1260

8:38
قُل
qul
Say
لِّلَّذِينَ
lilladhina
to those who
كَفَرُوٓاْ
kafaru
disbelieve
إِن
in
if
يَنتَهُواْ
yantahu
they cease
يُغۡفَرۡ
yugh'far
will be forgiven
لَهُم
lahum
for them
مَّا
ma
what
قَدۡ
qad
[verily]
سَلَفَ
salafa
(is) past
وَإِن
wa-in
But if
يَعُودُواْ
ya'udu
they return
فَقَدۡ
faqad
then verily
مَضَتۡ
madat
preceded
سُنَّتُ
sunnatu
(the) practice
ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ
al-awalina
(of) the former (people)
٣٨

[Prophet], tell the disbelievers that if they desist their past will be forgiven, but if they persist, they have an example in the fate of those who went before

Translation 1260

8:39
وَقَٰتِلُوهُمۡ
waqatiluhum
And fight them
حَتَّىٰ
hatta
until
لَا
la
not
تَكُونَ
takuna
there is
فِتۡنَةٞ
fit'natun
oppression
وَيَكُونَ
wayakuna
and is
ٱلدِّينُ
al-dinu
the religion
كُلُّهُۥ
kulluhu
all of it
لِلَّهِۚ
lillahi
for Allah
فَإِنِ
fa-ini
But if
ٱنتَهَوۡاْ
intahaw
they cease
فَإِنَّ
fa-inna
then indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
بِمَا
bima
of what
يَعۡمَلُونَ
ya'maluna
they do
بَصِيرٞ
basirun
(is) All-Seer
٣٩

[Believers], fight them until there is no more persecution, and all worship is devoted to God alone: if they desist, then God sees all that they do

Translation 1260

8:40
وَإِن
wa-in
And if
تَوَلَّوۡاْ
tawallaw
they turn away
فَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ
fa-i'lamu
then know
أَنَّ
anna
that
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
مَوۡلَىٰكُمۡۚ
mawlakum
(is) your Protector
نِعۡمَ
ni'ma
Excellent
ٱلۡمَوۡلَىٰ
al-mawla
(is) the Protector
وَنِعۡمَ
wani'ma
and Excellent
ٱلنَّصِيرُ
al-nasiru
(is) the Helper
٤٠

but if they pay no heed, be sure that God is your protector, the best protector and the best helper

8:41
۞وَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ
wa-i'lamu
And know
أَنَّمَا
annama
that what
غَنِمۡتُم
ghanim'tum
you obtain (as) spoils of war
مِّن
min
of
شَيۡءٖ
shayin
anything
فَأَنَّ
fa-anna
then that
لِلَّهِ
lillahi
for Allah
خُمُسَهُۥ
khumusahu
(is) one fifth of it
وَلِلرَّسُولِ
walilrrasuli
and for the Messenger
وَلِذِي
walidhi
and for the
ٱلۡقُرۡبَىٰ
al-qur'ba
near relatives
وَٱلۡيَتَٰمَىٰ
wal-yatama
and the orphans
وَٱلۡمَسَٰكِينِ
wal-masakini
and the needy
وَٱبۡنِ
wa-ib'ni
and the
ٱلسَّبِيلِ
al-sabili
wayfarer
إِن
in
if
كُنتُمۡ
kuntum
you
ءَامَنتُم
amantum
believe
بِٱللَّهِ
bil-lahi
in Allah
وَمَآ
wama
and (in) what
أَنزَلۡنَا
anzalna
We sent down
عَلَىٰ
ala
to
عَبۡدِنَا
abdina
Our slave
يَوۡمَ
yawma
(on the) day
ٱلۡفُرۡقَانِ
al-fur'qani
(of) the criterion
يَوۡمَ
yawma
(the) day
ٱلۡتَقَى
al-taqa
(when) met
ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِۗ
al-jam'ani
the two forces
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
And Allah
عَلَىٰ
ala
(is) on
كُلِّ
kulli
every
شَيۡءٖ
shayin
thing
قَدِيرٌ
qadirun
All-Powerful
٤١

Know that one-fifth of your battle gains belongs to God and the Messenger, to close relatives and orphans, to the needy and travellers, if you believe in God and the revelation We sent down to Our servant on the day of the decision, the day when the two forces met in battle. God has power over all things

Translation 1260

8:42
إِذۡ
idh
When
أَنتُم
antum
you (were)
بِٱلۡعُدۡوَةِ
bil-'ud'wati
on side of the valley
ٱلدُّنۡيَا
al-dun'ya
the nearer
وَهُم
wahum
and they
بِٱلۡعُدۡوَةِ
bil-'ud'wati
(were) on the side
ٱلۡقُصۡوَىٰ
al-qus'wa
the farther
وَٱلرَّكۡبُ
wal-rakbu
and the caravan
أَسۡفَلَ
asfala
(was) lower
مِنكُمۡۚ
minkum
than you
وَلَوۡ
walaw
And if
تَوَاعَدتُّمۡ
tawa'adttum
you (had) made an appointment
لَٱخۡتَلَفۡتُمۡ
la-ikh'talaftum
certainly you would have failed
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡمِيعَٰدِ
al-mi'adi
the appointment
وَلَٰكِن
walakin
But
لِّيَقۡضِيَ
liyaqdiya
that might accomplish
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah
أَمۡرٗا
amran
a matter
كَانَ
kana
(that) was
مَفۡعُولٗا
maf'ulan
destined
لِّيَهۡلِكَ
liyahlika
that (might be) destroyed
مَنۡ
man
(those) who
هَلَكَ
halaka
(were to be) destroyed
عَنۢ
an
on
بَيِّنَةٖ
bayyinatin
a clear evidence
وَيَحۡيَىٰ
wayahya
and (might) live
مَنۡ
man
(those) who
حَيَّ
hayya
(were to) live
عَنۢ
an
on
بَيِّنَةٖۗ
bayyinatin
a clear evidence
وَإِنَّ
wa-inna
And indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
لَسَمِيعٌ
lasami'un
(is) All-Hearing
عَلِيمٌ
alimun
All-Knowing
٤٢

Remember when you were on the near side of the valley, and they were on the far side and the caravan was below you. If you had made an appointment to fight, you would have failed to keep it [but the battle took place] so that God might bring about something already ordained, so that those who were to die might die after seeing a clear proof, and so that those who were to live might live after seeing a clear proof- God is all hearing and all seeing

Translation 1260

8:43
إِذۡ
idh
When
يُرِيكَهُمُ
yurikahumu
you (where) shown them
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
(by) Allah
فِي
fi
in
مَنَامِكَ
manamika
your dream
قَلِيلٗاۖ
qalilan
(as) few
وَلَوۡ
walaw
and if
أَرَىٰكَهُمۡ
arakahum
He had shown them to you
كَثِيرٗا
kathiran
(as) many
لَّفَشِلۡتُمۡ
lafashil'tum
surely you would have lost courage
وَلَتَنَٰزَعۡتُمۡ
walatanaza'tum
and surely you would have disputed
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡأَمۡرِ
al-amri
the matter
وَلَٰكِنَّ
walakinna
but
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
سَلَّمَۚ
sallama
saved (you)
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed He
عَلِيمُۢ
alimun
(is) All-Knower
بِذَاتِ
bidhati
of what is in
ٱلصُّدُورِ
al-suduri
the breasts
٤٣

[Prophet], remember when God made you see them in your sleep as few: if He had shown them to you [believers] as many, you would certainly have lost heart and argued about it, but God saved you. He knows the secrets of the heart

Translation 1260

8:44
وَإِذۡ
wa-idh
And when
يُرِيكُمُوهُمۡ
yurikumuhum
He showed them to you
إِذِ
idhi
when
ٱلۡتَقَيۡتُمۡ
al-taqaytum
you met
فِيٓ
fi
in
أَعۡيُنِكُمۡ
a'yunikum
your eyes
قَلِيلٗا
qalilan
(as) few
وَيُقَلِّلُكُمۡ
wayuqallilukum
and He made you (appear) as few
فِيٓ
fi
in
أَعۡيُنِهِمۡ
a'yunihim
their eyes
لِيَقۡضِيَ
liyaqdiya
that might accomplish
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah might accomplish
أَمۡرٗا
amran
a matter
كَانَ
kana
(that) was
مَفۡعُولٗاۗ
maf'ulan
(already) destined
وَإِلَى
wa-ila
And to
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
تُرۡجَعُ
tur'ja'u
return
ٱلۡأُمُورُ
al-umuru
(all) the matters
٤٤

When you met He showed them to you as few, and He made you few in their eyes, so that He might bring about what has been ordained: everything goes back to God

Translation 1260

8:45
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
yaayyuha
O you
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
who
ءَامَنُوٓاْ
amanu
believe
إِذَا
idha
When
لَقِيتُمۡ
laqitum
you meet
فِئَةٗ
fi-atan
a force
فَٱثۡبُتُواْ
fa-uth'butu
then be firm
وَٱذۡكُرُواْ
wa-udh'kuru
and remember
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
كَثِيرٗا
kathiran
much
لَّعَلَّكُمۡ
la'allakum
so that you may
تُفۡلِحُونَ
tuf'lihuna
(be) successful
٤٥

Believers, when you meet a force in battle, stand firm and keep God firmly in mind, so that you may prosper

8:46
وَأَطِيعُواْ
wa-ati'u
And obey
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
وَرَسُولَهُۥ
warasulahu
and His Messenger
وَلَا
wala
and (do) not
تَنَٰزَعُواْ
tanaza'u
dispute
فَتَفۡشَلُواْ
fatafshalu
lest you lose courage
وَتَذۡهَبَ
watadhhaba
and (would) depart
رِيحُكُمۡۖ
rihukum
your strength
وَٱصۡبِرُوٓاْۚ
wa-is'biru
and be patient
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
مَعَ
ma'a
(is) with
ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ
al-sabirina
the patient ones
٤٦

Obey God and His Messenger, and do not quarrel with one another, or you may lose heart and your spirit may desert you. Be steadfast: God is with the steadfast

Translation 1260

8:47
وَلَا
wala
And (do) not
تَكُونُواْ
takunu
be
كَٱلَّذِينَ
ka-alladhina
like those who
خَرَجُواْ
kharaju
came forth
مِن
min
from
دِيَٰرِهِم
diyarihim
their homes
بَطَرٗا
bataran
boastfully
وَرِئَآءَ
wariaa
and showing off
ٱلنَّاسِ
al-nasi
(to) the people
وَيَصُدُّونَ
wayasudduna
and hinder (them)
عَن
an
from
سَبِيلِ
sabili
(the) way
ٱللَّهِۚ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
And Allah
بِمَا
bima
of what
يَعۡمَلُونَ
ya'maluna
they do
مُحِيطٞ
muhitun
(is) All-Encompassing
٤٧

Do not be like those who came out of their homes full of conceit, showing off to people, and barring others from the way of God- God has full knowledge of all that they do

8:48
وَإِذۡ
wa-idh
And when
زَيَّنَ
zayyana
made fair-seeming
لَهُمُ
lahumu
to them
ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ
al-shaytanu
the Shaitaan
أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ
a'malahum
their deeds
وَقَالَ
waqala
and he said
لَا
la
No (one)
غَالِبَ
ghaliba
(can) overcome
لَكُمُ
lakumu
[to] you
ٱلۡيَوۡمَ
al-yawma
today
مِنَ
mina
from
ٱلنَّاسِ
al-nasi
the people
وَإِنِّي
wa-inni
and indeed I am
جَارٞ
jarun
a neighbor
لَّكُمۡۖ
lakum
for you
فَلَمَّا
falamma
But when
تَرَآءَتِ
taraati
came in sight
ٱلۡفِئَتَانِ
al-fi-atani
the two forces
نَكَصَ
nakasa
he turned away
عَلَىٰ
ala
on
عَقِبَيۡهِ
aqibayhi
his heels
وَقَالَ
waqala
and said
إِنِّي
inni
Indeed I am
بَرِيٓءٞ
barion
free
مِّنكُمۡ
minkum
of you
إِنِّيٓ
inni
Indeed I
أَرَىٰ
ara
see
مَا

إِنِّيٓ

أَخَافُ
akhafu
[I] fear
ٱللَّهَۚ
al-laha
Allah
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
And Allah
شَدِيدُ
shadidu
(is) severe
ٱلۡعِقَابِ
al-'iqabi
(in) the penalty
٤٨

Satan made their foul deeds seem fair to them, and said, ‘No one will conquer you today, for I will be right beside you,’ but when the armies came within sight of one another he turned on his heels, saying, ‘This is where I leave you: I see what you do not, and I fear God- God is severe in His punishment.’

8:49
إِذۡ
idh
When
يَقُولُ
yaqulu
said
ٱلۡمُنَٰفِقُونَ
al-munafiquna
the hypocrites
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhina
and those who
فِي
fi
in
قُلُوبِهِم
qulubihim
their hearts
مَّرَضٌ
maradun
(was) a disease
غَرَّ
gharra
(Had) deluded
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ
haulai
these (people)
دِينُهُمۡۗ
dinuhum
their religion
وَمَن
waman
But whoever
يَتَوَكَّلۡ
yatawakkal
puts (his) trust
عَلَى
ala
in
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
فَإِنَّ
fa-inna
then indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
عَزِيزٌ
azizun
(is) All-Mighty
حَكِيمٞ
hakimun
All-Wise
٤٩

The hypocrites and those who have sickness in their hearts said, ‘These people [the believers] must be deluded by their religion,’ but if anyone puts his trust in God, God is mighty and wise

8:50
وَلَوۡ
walaw
And if
تَرَىٰٓ
tara
you (could) see
إِذۡ
idh
when
يَتَوَفَّى
yatawaffa
take away souls
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
(of) those who
كَفَرُواْ
kafaru
disbelieve
ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ
al-malaikatu
the Angels
يَضۡرِبُونَ
yadribuna
striking
وُجُوهَهُمۡ
wujuhahum
their faces
وَأَدۡبَٰرَهُمۡ
wa-adbarahum
and their backs
وَذُوقُواْ
wadhuqu
Taste
عَذَابَ
adhaba
(the) punishment
ٱلۡحَرِيقِ
al-hariqi
(of) the Blazing Fire
٥٠

If only you [Prophet] could see, when the angels take the souls of the disbelievers, how they strike their faces and backs: it will be said, ‘Taste the punishment of the Fire
