2:197
ٱلۡحَجُّ
al-haju
(For) the Hajj
أَشۡهُرٞ
ashhurun
(are) months
مَّعۡلُومَٰتٞۚ
ma'lumatun
well known
فَمَن
faman
then whoever
فَرَضَ
farada
undertakes
فِيهِنَّ
fihinna
therein
ٱلۡحَجَّ
al-haja
the Hajj
فَلَا
fala
then no
رَفَثَ
rafatha
sexual relations
وَلَا
wala
and no
فُسُوقَ
fusuqa
wickedness
وَلَا
wala
and no
جِدَالَ
jidala
quarrelling
فِي
fi
during
ٱلۡحَجِّۗ
al-haji
the Hajj
وَمَا
wama
And whatever
تَفۡعَلُواْ
taf 'alu
you do
مِنۡ
min
of
خَيۡرٖ
khayrin
good
يَعۡلَمۡهُ
ya'lamhu
knows it
ٱللَّهُۗ
al-lahu
Allah
وَتَزَوَّدُواْ
watazawwadu
And take provision
فَإِنَّ
fa-inna
(but) indeed
خَيۡرَ
khayra
(the) best
ٱلزَّادِ
al-zadi
provision
ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰۖ
al-taqwa
(is) righteousness
وَٱتَّقُونِ
wa-ittaquni
And fear Me
يَٰٓأُوْلِي
yauli
O men
ٱلۡأَلۡبَٰبِ
al-albabi
(of) understanding
١٩٧

The pilgrimage takes place during the prescribed months. There should be no indecent speech, misbehaviour, or quarrelling for anyone undertaking the pilgrimage- whatever good you do, God is well aware of it. Provide well for yourselves: the best provision is to be mindful of God- always be mindful of Me, you who have understanding

Translation 1260

2:198
لَيۡسَ
laysa
Not is
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
alaykum
on you
جُنَاحٌ
junahun
any sin
أَن
an
that
تَبۡتَغُواْ
tabtaghu
you seek
فَضۡلٗا
fadlan
bounty
مِّن
min
from
رَّبِّكُمۡۚ
rabbikum
your Lord
فَإِذَآ
fa-idha
And when
أَفَضۡتُم
afadtum
you depart
مِّنۡ
min
from
عَرَفَٰتٖ
arafatin
(Mount) Arafat
فَٱذۡكُرُواْ
fa-udh'kuru
then remember
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
عِندَ
inda
near
ٱلۡمَشۡعَرِ
al-mash'ari
the Monument
ٱلۡحَرَامِۖ
al-harami
[the] Sacred
وَٱذۡكُرُوهُ
wa-udh'kuruhu
And remember Him
كَمَا
kama
as
هَدَىٰكُمۡ
hadakum
He (has) guided you
وَإِن
wa-in
[and] though
كُنتُم
kuntum
you were
مِّن
min
[from]
قَبۡلِهِۦ
qablihi
before [it]
لَمِنَ
lamina
surely among
ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
al-dalina
those who went astray
١٩٨

but it is no offence to seek some bounty from your Lord. When you surge down from Arafat remember God at the sacred place. Remember Him: He has guided you. Before that you were astray

Translation 1260

2:199
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
أَفِيضُواْ
afidu
depart
مِنۡ
min
from
حَيۡثُ
haythu
wherever
أَفَاضَ
afada
depart
ٱلنَّاسُ
al-nasu
the people
وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ
wa-is'taghfiru
and ask forgiveness
ٱللَّهَۚ
al-laha
(of) Allah
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
غَفُورٞ
ghafurun
(is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمٞ
rahimun
Most Merciful
١٩٩

Surge down where the rest of the people do, and ask forgiveness of God: He is most forgiving and merciful

Translation 1260

2:200
فَإِذَا
fa-idha
Then when
قَضَيۡتُم
qadaytum
you complete[d]
مَّنَٰسِكَكُمۡ
manasikakum
your acts of worship
فَٱذۡكُرُواْ
fa-udh'kuru
then remember
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
كَذِكۡرِكُمۡ
kadhik'rikum
as you remember
ءَابَآءَكُمۡ
abaakum
your forefathers
أَوۡ
aw
or
أَشَدَّ
ashadda
(with) greater
ذِكۡرٗاۗ
dhik'ran
remembrance
فَمِنَ
famina
And from
ٱلنَّاسِ
al-nasi
the people
مَن
man
who
يَقُولُ
yaqulu
say
رَبَّنَآ
rabbana
Our Lord
ءَاتِنَا
atina
Grant us
فِي
fi
in
ٱلدُّنۡيَا
al-dun'ya
the world
وَمَا
wama
And not
لَهُۥ
lahu
for him
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ
al-akhirati
the Hereafter
مِنۡ
min
[of]
خَلَٰقٖ
khalaqin
any share
٢٠٠

When you have completed your rites, remember God as much as you remember your own fathers, or even more. There are some who pray, ‘Our Lord, give us good in this world,’ and they will have no share in the Hereafter

Translation 1260

2:201
وَمِنۡهُم
wamin'hum
And from those
مَّن
man
who
يَقُولُ
yaqulu
say
رَبَّنَآ
rabbana
Our Lord
ءَاتِنَا
atina
Grant us
فِي
fi
in
ٱلدُّنۡيَا
al-dun'ya
the world
حَسَنَةٗ
hasanatan
good
وَفِي
wafi
and in
ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ
al-akhirati
the Hereafter
حَسَنَةٗ
hasanatan
good
وَقِنَا
waqina
and save us
عَذَابَ
adhaba
(from the) punishment
ٱلنَّارِ
al-nari
(of) the Fire
٢٠١

others pray, ‘Our Lord, give us good in this world and in the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire.’

Translation 1260

2:202
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ
ulaika
Those
لَهُمۡ
lahum
for them
نَصِيبٞ
nasibun
(is) a share
مِّمَّا
mimma
of what
كَسَبُواْۚ
kasabu
they earned
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
and Allah
سَرِيعُ
sari'u
(is) swift
ٱلۡحِسَابِ
al-hisabi
(in taking) account
٢٠٢

They will have the share they have worked for: God is swift in reckoning

۞وَٱذۡكُرُواْ
wa-udh'kuru
And remember
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
فِيٓ
fi
during
أَيَّامٖ
ayyamin
days
مَّعۡدُودَٰتٖۚ
ma'dudatin
numbered
فَمَن
faman
Then (he) who
تَعَجَّلَ
ta'ajjala
hurries
فِي
fi
in
يَوۡمَيۡنِ
yawmayni
two days
فَلَآ
fala
then no
إِثۡمَ
ith'ma
sin
عَلَيۡهِ
alayhi
upon him
وَمَن
waman
and whoever
تَأَخَّرَ
ta-akhara
delays
فَلَآ
fala
then no
إِثۡمَ
ith'ma
sin
عَلَيۡهِۖ
alayhi
upon him
لِمَنِ
limani
for (the one) who
ٱتَّقَىٰۗ
ittaqa
fears
وَٱتَّقُواْ
wa-ittaqu
And fear
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
وَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ
wa-i'lamu
and know
أَنَّكُمۡ
annakum
that you
إِلَيۡهِ
ilayhi
unto Him
تُحۡشَرُونَ
tuh'sharuna
will be gathered
٢٠٣

Remember God on the appointed days. If anyone is in a hurry to leave after two days, there is no blame on him, nor is there any blame on anyone who stays on, so long as they are mindful of God. Be mindful of God, and remember that you will be gathered to Him

Translation 1260

2:204
وَمِنَ
wamina
And of
ٱلنَّاسِ
al-nasi
the people
مَن
man
(is the one) who
يُعۡجِبُكَ
yu'jibuka
pleases you
قَوۡلُهُۥ
qawluhu
(with) his speech
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ
al-hayati
the life
ٱلدُّنۡيَا
al-dun'ya
(of) the world
وَيُشۡهِدُ
wayush'hidu
and he calls to witness
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
عَلَىٰ
ala
on
مَا
ma
what
فِي
fi
(is) in
قَلۡبِهِۦ
qalbihi
his heart
وَهُوَ
wahuwa
and he
أَلَدُّ
aladdu
(is) the most quarrelsome
ٱلۡخِصَامِ
al-khisami
(of) opponents
٢٠٤

There is [a kind of] man whose views on the life of this world may please you [Prophet], he even calls on God to witness what is in his heart, yet he is the bitterest of opponents

Translation 1260

2:205
وَإِذَا
wa-idha
And when
تَوَلَّىٰ
tawalla
he turns away
سَعَىٰ
sa'a
he strives
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the earth
لِيُفۡسِدَ
liyuf'sida
to spread corruption
فِيهَا
fiha
[in it]
وَيُهۡلِكَ
wayuh'lika
and destroys
ٱلۡحَرۡثَ
al-hartha
the crops
وَٱلنَّسۡلَۚ
wal-nasla
and progeny
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
And Allah
لَا
la
(does) not
يُحِبُّ
yuhibbu
love
ٱلۡفَسَادَ
al-fasada
[the] corruption
٢٠٥

When he leaves, he sets out to spread corruption in the land, destroying crops and live-stock- God does not like corruption

Translation 1260

2:206
وَإِذَا
wa-idha
And when
قِيلَ
qila
it is said
لَهُ
lahu
to him
ٱتَّقِ
ittaqi
Fear
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
أَخَذَتۡهُ
akhadhathu
takes him
ٱلۡعِزَّةُ
al-'izatu
(his) pride
بِٱلۡإِثۡمِۚ
bil-ith'mi
to [the] sins
فَحَسۡبُهُۥ
fahasbuhu
Then enough for him
جَهَنَّمُۖ
jahannamu
(is) Hell
وَلَبِئۡسَ
walabi'sa
[and] surely an evil
ٱلۡمِهَادُ
al-mihadu
[the] resting-place
٢٠٦

When he is told, ‘Beware of God,’ his arrogance leads him to sin. Hell is enough for him: a dreadful resting place

Translation 1260

2:207
وَمِنَ
wamina
And of
ٱلنَّاسِ
al-nasi
the people
مَن
man
(is the one) who
يَشۡرِي
yashri
sells
نَفۡسَهُ
nafsahu
his own self
ٱبۡتِغَآءَ
ib'tighaa
seeking
مَرۡضَاتِ
mardati
pleasure
ٱللَّهِۚ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
And Allah
رَءُوفُۢ
raufun
(is) full of Kindness
بِٱلۡعِبَادِ
bil-'ibadi
to His servants
٢٠٧

But there is also a kind of man who gives his life away to please God, and God is most compassionate to His servants

Translation 1260

2:208
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
yaayyuha
O you
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
who
ءَامَنُواْ
amanu
believe[d]
ٱدۡخُلُواْ
ud'khulu
Enter
فِي
fi
in
ٱلسِّلۡمِ
al-sil'mi
Islam
كَآفَّةٗ
kaffatan
completely
وَلَا
wala
and (do) not
تَتَّبِعُواْ
tattabi'u
follow
خُطُوَٰتِ
khutuwati
footsteps
ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنِۚ
al-shaytani
(of) the Shaitaan
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed he
لَكُمۡ
lakum
(is) for you
عَدُوّٞ
aduwwun
an enemy
مُّبِينٞ
mubinun
open
٢٠٨

You who believe, enter wholeheartedly into submission to God and do not follow in Satan’s footsteps, for he is your sworn enemy

Translation 1260

2:209
فَإِن
fa-in
Then if
زَلَلۡتُم
zalaltum
you slip
مِّنۢ
min
from
بَعۡدِ
ba'di
after
مَا
ma
[what]
جَآءَتۡكُمُ
jaatkumu
came to you
ٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتُ
al-bayinatu
(from) the clear proofs
فَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ
fa-i'lamu
then know
أَنَّ
anna
that
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
عَزِيزٌ
azizun
(is) All-Mighty
حَكِيمٌ
hakimun
All-Wise
٢٠٩

If you slip back after clear proof has come to you, then be aware that God is almighty and wise

Translation 1260

2:210
هَلۡ
hal
Are
يَنظُرُونَ
yanzuruna
they waiting
إِلَّآ
illa
[except]
أَن
an
that
يَأۡتِيَهُمُ
yatiyahumu
comes to them
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah
فِي
fi
in
ظُلَلٖ
zulalin
(the) shadows
مِّنَ
mina
of
ٱلۡغَمَامِ
al-ghamami
[the] clouds
وَٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ
wal-malaikatu
and the Angels
وَقُضِيَ
waqudiya
and is decreed
ٱلۡأَمۡرُۚ
al-amru
the matter
وَإِلَى
wa-ila
And to
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
تُرۡجَعُ
tur'ja'u
return
ٱلۡأُمُورُ
al-umuru
(all) the matters
٢١٠

Are these people waiting for God to come to them in the shadows of the clouds, together with the angels? But the matter would already have been decided by then: all matters are brought back to God
