39:32
۞فَمَنۡ
faman
Then who
أَظۡلَمُ
azlamu
(is) more unjust
مِمَّن
mimman
than (one) who
كَذَبَ
kadhaba
lies
عَلَى
ala
against
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
وَكَذَّبَ
wakadhaba
and denies
بِٱلصِّدۡقِ
bil-sid'qi
the truth
إِذۡ
idh
when
جَآءَهُۥٓۚ
jaahu
it comes to him
أَلَيۡسَ
alaysa
Is (there) not
فِي
fi
in
جَهَنَّمَ
jahannama
Hell
مَثۡوٗى
mathwan
an abode
لِّلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
lil'kafirina
for the disbelievers
٣٢

So who could be more wrong than the person who invents a lie about God and rejects the truth when it comes to him? Is there not ample punishment for the disbelievers in Hell

Translation 1260

39:33
وَٱلَّذِي
wa-alladhi
And the one who
جَآءَ
jaa
brought
بِٱلصِّدۡقِ
bil-sid'qi
the truth
وَصَدَّقَ
wasaddaqa
and believed
بِهِۦٓ
bihi
in it
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ
ulaika
those
هُمُ
humu
[they]
ٱلۡمُتَّقُونَ
al-mutaquna
(are) the righteous
٣٣

It is the one who brings the truth and the one who accepts it as true who are mindful of God

Translation 1260

39:34
لَهُم
lahum
For them
مَّا
ma
(is) what
يَشَآءُونَ
yashauna
they wish
عِندَ
inda
with
رَبِّهِمۡۚ
rabbihim
their Lord
ذَٰلِكَ
dhalika
That
جَزَآءُ
jazau
(is the) reward
ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ
al-muh'sinina
(of) the good-doers
٣٤

they will have everything they wish for with their Lord. Such is the reward of those who do good

39:35
لِيُكَفِّرَ
liyukaffira
That Allah will remove
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
That Allah will remove
عَنۡهُمۡ
anhum
from them
أَسۡوَأَ
aswa-a
(the) worst
ٱلَّذِي
alladhi
(of) what
عَمِلُواْ
amilu
they did
وَيَجۡزِيَهُمۡ
wayajziyahum
and reward them
أَجۡرَهُم
ajrahum
their due
بِأَحۡسَنِ
bi-ahsani
for (the) best
ٱلَّذِي
alladhi
(of) what
كَانُواْ
kanu
they used to
يَعۡمَلُونَ
ya'maluna
do
٣٥

God will absolve them even of their worst deeds and will reward them according to their best

39:36
أَلَيۡسَ
alaysa
Is not
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah
بِكَافٍ
bikafin
sufficient
عَبۡدَهُۥۖ
abdahu
(for) His slave
وَيُخَوِّفُونَكَ
wayukhawwifunaka
And they threaten you
بِٱلَّذِينَ
bi-alladhina
with those
مِن
min
besides Him
دُونِهِۦۚ
dunihi
besides Him
وَمَن
waman
And whoever
يُضۡلِلِ
yud'lili
Allah lets go astray
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah lets go astray
فَمَا
fama
then not
لَهُۥ
lahu
for him
مِنۡ
min
any
هَادٖ
hadin
guide
٣٦

Is God not enough for His servant? Yet they threaten you [Prophet] with those they worship other than Him. If God allows someone to stray he has no one to guide him

Translation 1260

39:37
وَمَن
waman
And whoever
يَهۡدِ
yahdi
Allah guides
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah guides
فَمَا
fama
then not
لَهُۥ
lahu
for him
مِن
min
any
مُّضِلٍّۗ
mudillin
misleader
أَلَيۡسَ
alaysa
Is not
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah
بِعَزِيزٖ
bi'azizin
All-Mighty
ذِي
dhi
All-Able of retribution
ٱنتِقَامٖ
intiqamin
All-Able of retribution
٣٧

if God guides someone no one can lead him astray. Is God not mighty and capable of retribution

Translation 1260

39:38
وَلَئِن
wala-in
And if
سَأَلۡتَهُم
sa-altahum
you ask them
مَّنۡ
man
who
خَلَقَ
khalaqa
created
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
al-samawati
the heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ
wal-arda
and the earth
لَيَقُولُنَّ
layaqulunna
Surely they will say
ٱللَّهُۚ
al-lahu
Allah
قُلۡ
qul
Say
أَفَرَءَيۡتُم
afara-aytum
Then do you see
مَّا
ma
what
تَدۡعُونَ
tad'una
you invoke
مِن
min
besides
دُونِ
duni
besides
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
إِنۡ
in
if
أَرَادَنِيَ
aradaniya
Allah intended for me
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah intended for me
بِضُرٍّ
bidurrin
harm
هَلۡ
hal
are
هُنَّ
hunna
they
كَٰشِفَٰتُ
kashifatu
removers
ضُرِّهِۦٓ
durrihi
(of) harm (from) Him
أَوۡ
aw
or
أَرَادَنِي
aradani
if He intended for me
بِرَحۡمَةٍ
birahmatin
mercy
هَلۡ
hal
are
هُنَّ
hunna
they
مُمۡسِكَٰتُ
mum'sikatu
withholders
رَحۡمَتِهِۦۚ
rahmatihi
(of) His mercy
قُلۡ
qul
Say
حَسۡبِيَ
hasbiya
Sufficient (is) Allah for me
ٱللَّهُۖ
al-lahu
Sufficient (is) Allah for me
عَلَيۡهِ
alayhi
upon Him
يَتَوَكَّلُ
yatawakkalu
put trust
ٱلۡمُتَوَكِّلُونَ
al-mutawakiluna
those who trust
٣٨

If you [Prophet] ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and earth?’ they are sure to answer, ‘God,’ so say, ‘Consider those you invoke beside Him: if God wished to harm me, could they undo that harm? If God wished to show me mercy, could they withhold that mercy?’ Say, ‘God is enough for me: all those who trust should put their trust in Him.’

39:39
قُلۡ

Say
يَٰقَوۡمِ
yaqawmi
O my people
ٱعۡمَلُواْ
i'malu
Work
عَلَىٰ
ala
(according) to
مَكَانَتِكُمۡ
makanatikum
your position
إِنِّي
inni
indeed I am
عَٰمِلٞۖ
amilun
working
فَسَوۡفَ
fasawfa
then soon
تَعۡلَمُونَ
ta'lamuna
you will know
٣٩

Say, ‘My people, do whatever is in your power- and so will I. You will find out

39:40
مَن
man
(Upon) whom
يَأۡتِيهِ
yatihi
will come
عَذَابٞ
adhabun
a punishment
يُخۡزِيهِ
yukh'zihi
disgracing him
وَيَحِلُّ
wayahillu
and descends
عَلَيۡهِ
alayhi
on him
عَذَابٞ
adhabun
a punishment
مُّقِيمٌ
muqimun
everlasting
٤٠

who will suffer humiliation, and on whom a lasting torment will descend.’

إِنَّآ

Indeed We
أَنزَلۡنَا
anzalna
We revealed
عَلَيۡكَ
alayka
to you
ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ
al-kitaba
the Book
لِلنَّاسِ
lilnnasi
for [the] mankind
بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ
bil-haqi
in truth
فَمَنِ
famani
So whoever
ٱهۡتَدَىٰ
ih'tada
accepts guidance
فَلِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ
falinafsihi
then (it is) for his soul
وَمَن
waman
and whoever
ضَلَّ
dalla
goes astray
فَإِنَّمَا
fa-innama
then only
يَضِلُّ
yadillu
he strays
عَلَيۡهَاۖ
alayha
against his (soul)
وَمَآ
wama
And not
أَنتَ
anta
you
عَلَيۡهِم
alayhim
(are) over them
بِوَكِيلٍ
biwakilin
a manager
٤١

We have sent the Scripture down to you [Prophet] with the Truth for people. Whoever follows the guidance does so for his own benefit, whoever strays away from it does so at his own peril: you are not in charge of them

Translation 1260

39:42
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah
يَتَوَفَّى
yatawaffa
takes
ٱلۡأَنفُسَ
al-anfusa
the souls
حِينَ
hina
(at the) time
مَوۡتِهَا
mawtiha
(of) their death
وَٱلَّتِي
wa-allati
and the one who
لَمۡ
lam
(does) not
تَمُتۡ
tamut
die
فِي
fi
in
مَنَامِهَاۖ
manamiha
their sleep
فَيُمۡسِكُ
fayum'siku
Then He keeps
ٱلَّتِي
allati
the one whom
قَضَىٰ
qada
He has decreed
عَلَيۡهَا
alayha
for them
ٱلۡمَوۡتَ
al-mawta
the death
وَيُرۡسِلُ
wayur'silu
and sends
ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰٓ
al-ukh'ra
the others
إِلَىٰٓ
ila
for
أَجَلٖ
ajalin
a term
مُّسَمًّىۚ
musamman
specified
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
فِي
fi
in
ذَٰلِكَ
dhalika
that
لَأٓيَٰتٖ
laayatin
surely (are) signs
لِّقَوۡمٖ
liqawmin
for a people
يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
yatafakkaruna
who ponder
٤٢

God takes the souls of the dead and the souls of the living while they sleep- He keeps hold of those whose death He has ordained and sends the others back until their appointed time- there truly are signs in this for those who reflect

39:43
أَمِ
ami
Or
ٱتَّخَذُواْ
ittakhadhu
have they taken
مِن

besides
دُونِ
duni
besides
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
شُفَعَآءَۚ
shufa'aa
intercessors
قُلۡ
qul
Say
أَوَلَوۡ
awalaw
Even though
كَانُواْ
kanu
they were
لَا
la
not
يَمۡلِكُونَ
yamlikuna
possessing
شَيۡـٔٗا
shayan
anything
وَلَا
wala
and not
يَعۡقِلُونَ
ya'qiluna
they understand
٤٣

Yet they take intercessors besides God! Say, ‘Even though these have no power or understanding?’

Translation 1260

39:44
قُل
qul
Say
لِّلَّهِ
lillahi
To Allah (belongs)
ٱلشَّفَٰعَةُ
al-shafa'atu
the intercession
جَمِيعٗاۖ
jami'an
all
لَّهُۥ
lahu
For Him
مُلۡكُ
mul'ku
(is the) dominion
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
al-samawati
(of) the heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ
wal-ardi
and the earth
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
إِلَيۡهِ
ilayhi
to Him
تُرۡجَعُونَ
tur'ja'una
you will be returned
٤٤

Say, ‘All intercession belongs to God alone; He holds control of the heavens and the earth; in the end you will all return to Him.’

39:45
وَإِذَا
wa-idha
And when
ذُكِرَ
dhukira
Allah is mentioned
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah is mentioned
وَحۡدَهُ
wahdahu
Alone
ٱشۡمَأَزَّتۡ
ish'ma-azzat
shrink with aversion
قُلُوبُ
qulubu
(the) hearts
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
(of) those who
لَا
la
(do) not
يُؤۡمِنُونَ
yu'minuna
believe
بِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِۖ
bil-akhirati
in the Hereafter
وَإِذَا
wa-idha
and when
ذُكِرَ
dhukira
are mentioned
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those
مِن
min
besides Him
دُونِهِۦٓ
dunihi
besides Him
إِذَا
idha
behold
هُمۡ
hum
They
يَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ
yastabshiruna
rejoice
٤٥

Whenever God is mentioned on His own, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink with aversion, but they rejoice when gods other than Him are mentioned

39:46
قُلِ
quli
Say
ٱللَّهُمَّ
al-lahuma
O Allah
فَاطِرَ
fatira
Creator
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
al-samawati
(of) the heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ
wal-ardi
and the earth
عَٰلِمَ
alima
Knower
ٱلۡغَيۡبِ
al-ghaybi
(of) the unseen
وَٱلشَّهَٰدَةِ
wal-shahadati
and the witnessed
أَنتَ
anta
You
تَحۡكُمُ
tahkumu
will judge
بَيۡنَ
bayna
between
عِبَادِكَ
ibadika
Your slaves
فِي
fi
in
مَا
ma
what
كَانُواْ
kanu
they used to
فِيهِ
fihi
therein
يَخۡتَلِفُونَ
yakhtalifuna
differ
٤٦

Say, ‘God! Creator of the heavens and earth! Knower of all that is hidden and all that is open, You will judge between Your servants regarding their differences.’

Translation 1260

39:47
وَلَوۡ
walaw
And if
أَنَّ
anna
And if
لِلَّذِينَ
lilladhina
those who
ظَلَمُواْ
zalamu
did wrong
مَا
ma
(had) whatever
فِي
fi
(is) in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the earth
جَمِيعٗا
jami'an
all
وَمِثۡلَهُۥ
wamith'lahu
and (the) like of it
مَعَهُۥ
ma'ahu
with it
لَٱفۡتَدَوۡاْ
la-if'tadaw
they would ransom
بِهِۦ
bihi
with it
مِن
min
from
سُوٓءِ
sui
(the) evil
ٱلۡعَذَابِ
al-'adhabi
(of) the punishment
يَوۡمَ
yawma
(on the) Day
ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِۚ
al-qiyamati
(of) the Resurrection
وَبَدَا
wabada
And (will) appear
لَهُم
lahum
to them
مِّنَ
mina
from
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
مَا
ma
what
لَمۡ
lam
not
يَكُونُواْ
yakunu
they had
يَحۡتَسِبُونَ
yahtasibuna
taken into account
٤٧

If the evildoers possessed the earth’s assets twice over they would offer them to ransom themselves from the terrible suffering on the Day of Resurrection: God will show them something they had not reckoned with

And will become apparent

سَيِّـَٔاتُ

(the) evils
مَا
ma
(of) what
كَسَبُواْ
kasabu
they earned
وَحَاقَ
wahaqa
and will surround
بِهِم
bihim
them
مَّا
ma
what
كَانُواْ
kanu
they used to
بِهِۦ
bihi
[in it]
يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ
yastahziuna
mock
٤٨

the evil of their deeds will become plain to them, and they will be overwhelmed by that at which they used to laugh

39:49
فَإِذَا
fa-idha
So when
مَسَّ
massa
touches
ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ
al-insana
[the] man
ضُرّٞ
durrun
adversity
دَعَانَا
da'ana
he calls upon Us
ثُمَّ
thumma
then
إِذَا
idha
when
خَوَّلۡنَٰهُ
khawwalnahu
We bestow (on) him
نِعۡمَةٗ
ni'matan
a favor
مِّنَّا
minna
from Us
قَالَ
qala
he says
إِنَّمَآ
innama
Only
أُوتِيتُهُۥ
utituhu
I have been given it
عَلَىٰ
ala
for
عِلۡمِۭۚ
il'min
knowledge
بَلۡ
bal
Nay
هِيَ
hiya
it
فِتۡنَةٞ
fit'natun
(is) a trial
وَلَٰكِنَّ
walakinna
but
أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ
aktharahum
most of them
لَا
la
(do) not
يَعۡلَمُونَ
ya'lamuna
know
٤٩

When man suffers some affliction, he cries out to Us, but when We favour him with Our blessing, he says, ‘All this has been given to me because of my knowledge’- it is only a test, though most of them do not know it

39:50
قَدۡ
qad
Indeed
قَالَهَا
qalaha
said it
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those
مِن
min
before them
قَبۡلِهِمۡ
qablihim
before them
فَمَآ
fama
but (did) not
أَغۡنَىٰ
aghna
avail
عَنۡهُم
anhum
them
مَّا
ma
what
كَانُواْ
kanu
they used to
يَكۡسِبُونَ
yaksibuna
earn
٥٠

Those who lived before them said the same. What they did was of no use to them

Translation 1260

39:51
فَأَصَابَهُمۡ
fa-asabahum
Then struck them
سَيِّـَٔاتُ
sayyiatu
(the) evils
مَا
ma
(of) what
كَسَبُواْۚ
kasabu
they earned
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhina
And those who
ظَلَمُواْ
zalamu
have wronged
مِنۡ
min
of
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ
haulai
these
سَيُصِيبُهُمۡ
sayusibuhum
will strike them
سَيِّـَٔاتُ
sayyiatu
(the) evils
مَا
ma
(of) what
كَسَبُواْ
kasabu
they earned
وَمَا
wama
and not
هُم
hum
they
بِمُعۡجِزِينَ
bimu'jizina
will be able to escape
٥١

they suffered its evil effects. Today’s wrongdoers will also suffer the evil effects of their deeds: they will not escape

39:52
أَوَلَمۡ
awalam
Do not
يَعۡلَمُوٓاْ
ya'lamu
they know
أَنَّ
anna
that
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
يَبۡسُطُ
yabsutu
extends
ٱلرِّزۡقَ
al-riz'qa
the provision
لِمَن
liman
for whom
يَشَآءُ
yashau
He wills
وَيَقۡدِرُۚ
wayaqdiru
and restricts
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
فِي
fi
in
ذَٰلِكَ
dhalika
that
لَأٓيَٰتٖ
laayatin
surely (are) signs
لِّقَوۡمٖ
liqawmin
for a people
يُؤۡمِنُونَ
yu'minuna
who believe
٥٢

Do they not know that God provides abun-dantly for anyone He will and gives sparingly to anyone He will? There truly are signs in this for those who believe

Translation 1260

39:53
۞قُلۡ
qul
Say
يَٰعِبَادِيَ
ya'ibadiya
O My slaves
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
Those who
أَسۡرَفُواْ
asrafu
have transgressed
عَلَىٰٓ
ala
against
أَنفُسِهِمۡ
anfusihim
themselves
لَا
la
(do) not
تَقۡنَطُواْ
taqnatu
despair
مِن
min
of
رَّحۡمَةِ
rahmati
(the) Mercy
ٱللَّهِۚ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
يَغۡفِرُ
yaghfiru
forgives
ٱلذُّنُوبَ
al-dhunuba
the sins
جَمِيعًاۚ
jami'an
all
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed He
هُوَ
huwa
He
ٱلۡغَفُورُ
al-ghafuru
(is) the Oft-Forgiving
ٱلرَّحِيمُ
al-rahimu
the Most Merciful
٥٣

Say, ‘[God says], My servants who have harmed yourselves by your own excess, do not despair of God’s mercy. God forgives all sins: He is truly the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful

Translation 1260

39:54
وَأَنِيبُوٓاْ
wa-anibu
And turn
إِلَىٰ
ila
to
رَبِّكُمۡ
rabbikum
your Lord
وَأَسۡلِمُواْ
wa-aslimu
and submit
لَهُۥ
lahu
to Him
مِن
min
before
قَبۡلِ
qabli
before
أَن
an
[that]
يَأۡتِيَكُمُ
yatiyakumu
comes to you
ٱلۡعَذَابُ
al-'adhabu
the punishment
ثُمَّ
thumma
then
لَا
la
not
تُنصَرُونَ
tunsaruna
you will be helped
٥٤

Turn to your Lord. Submit to Him before the punishment overtakes you and you can no longer be helped

39:55
وَٱتَّبِعُوٓاْ
wa-ittabi'u
And follow
أَحۡسَنَ
ahsana
(the) best
مَآ
ma
(of) what
أُنزِلَ
unzila
is revealed
إِلَيۡكُم
ilaykum
to you
مِّن
min
from
رَّبِّكُم
rabbikum
your Lord
مِّن
min
before
قَبۡلِ
qabli
before
أَن
an
[that]
يَأۡتِيَكُمُ
yatiyakumu
comes to you
ٱلۡعَذَابُ
al-'adhabu
the punishment
بَغۡتَةٗ
baghtatan
suddenly
وَأَنتُمۡ
wa-antum
while you
لَا
la
(do) not
تَشۡعُرُونَ
tash'uruna
perceive
٥٥

Follow the best teaching sent down to you from your Lord, before the punishment suddenly takes you, unawares

Translation 1260

39:56
أَن
an
Lest
تَقُولَ
taqula
should say
نَفۡسٞ
nafsun
a soul
يَٰحَسۡرَتَىٰ
yahasrata
Oh! My regret
عَلَىٰ
ala
over
مَا
ma
what
فَرَّطتُ
farrattu
I neglected
فِي
fi
in
جَنۢبِ
janbi
regard (to)
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
وَإِن
wa-in
and that
كُنتُ
kuntu
I was
لَمِنَ
lamina
surely among
ٱلسَّٰخِرِينَ
al-sakhirina
the mockers
٥٦

and your soul says, “Woe is me for having neglected what is due to God, and having been one of those who scoffed!”

ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ

the righteous
٥٧

Or it says, “If God had guided me, I would have joined the righteous!”

39:58
أَوۡ

تَرَى

it sees
ٱلۡعَذَابَ
al-'adhaba
the punishment
لَوۡ
law
If
أَنَّ
anna
only
لِي

for me
كَرَّةٗ
karratan
another chance
فَأَكُونَ
fa-akuna
then I could be
مِنَ
mina
among
ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ
al-muh'sinina
the good-doers
٥٨

Or, faced by punishment, it says, “If only I could have another chance, I would join those who do good!”

39:59
بَلَىٰ
bala
Yes
قَدۡ
qad
verily
جَآءَتۡكَ
jaatka
came to you
ءَايَٰتِي
ayati
My Verses
فَكَذَّبۡتَ
fakadhabta
but you denied
بِهَا
biha
them
وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرۡتَ
wa-is'takbarta
and were arrogant
وَكُنتَ
wakunta
and you were
مِنَ
mina
among
ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
al-kafirina
the disbelievers
٥٩

No indeed! My messages came to you and you rejected them: you were arrogant and rejected the truth.’

39:60
وَيَوۡمَ
wayawma
And (on the) Day
ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ
al-qiyamati
(of) the Resurrection
تَرَى
tara
you will see
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
كَذَبُواْ
kadhabu
lied
عَلَى
ala
about
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
وُجُوهُهُم
wujuhuhum
their faces
مُّسۡوَدَّةٌۚ
mus'waddatun
(will be) blackened

Is (there) not

جَهَنَّمَ
jahannama
Hell
مَثۡوٗى
mathwan
an abode
لِّلۡمُتَكَبِّرِينَ
lil'mutakabbirina
for the arrogant
٦٠

On the Day of Resurrection, you [Prophet] will see those who told lies against God, their faces darkened. Is there not ample punishment for the arrogant in Hell

Translation 1260

39:61
وَيُنَجِّي
wayunajji
And Allah will deliver
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
And Allah will deliver
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
ٱتَّقَوۡاْ
ittaqaw
feared (Him)
بِمَفَازَتِهِمۡ
bimafazatihim
to their place of salvation
لَا
la
not
يَمَسُّهُمُ
yamassuhumu
will touch them
ٱلسُّوٓءُ
al-suu
the evil
وَلَا
wala
and not
هُمۡ
hum
they
يَحۡزَنُونَ
yahzanuna
will grieve
٦١

But God will deliver those who took heed of Him to their place of safety: no harm will touch them, nor will they grieve

39:62
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah
خَٰلِقُ
khaliqu
(is the) Creator
كُلِّ
kulli
(of) all
شَيۡءٖۖ
shayin
things
وَهُوَ
wahuwa
and He
عَلَىٰ
ala
(is) over
كُلِّ
kulli
all
شَيۡءٖ
shayin
things
وَكِيلٞ
wakilun
a Guardian
٦٢

God is the Creator of all things; He has charge of everything

Translation 1260

39:63
لَّهُۥ
lahu
For Him
مَقَالِيدُ
maqalidu
(are the) keys
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
al-samawati
(of) the heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ
wal-ardi
and the earth
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhina
And those who
كَفَرُواْ
kafaru
disbelieve
بِـَٔايَٰتِ
biayati
in (the) Verses
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ
ulaika
those
هُمُ
humu
they
ٱلۡخَٰسِرُونَ
al-khasiruna
(are) the losers
٦٣

the keys of the heavens and earth are His. Those who have rejected the revelations of God will be the losers

Translation 1260

39:64
قُلۡ
qul
Say
أَفَغَيۡرَ
afaghayra
Is (it) other than
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
تَأۡمُرُوٓنِّيٓ
tamurunni
you order me
أَعۡبُدُ
a'budu
(to) worship
أَيُّهَا
ayyuha
O
ٱلۡجَٰهِلُونَ
al-jahiluna
ignorant ones
٦٤

Say, ‘Do you order me to worship someone other than God, you foolish people?’

Translation 1260

39:65
وَلَقَدۡ
walaqad
And verily
أُوحِيَ
uhiya
it has been revealed
إِلَيۡكَ
ilayka
to you
وَإِلَى
wa-ila
and to
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
مِن
min
(were) before you
قَبۡلِكَ
qablika
(were) before you
لَئِنۡ
la-in
if
أَشۡرَكۡتَ
ashrakta
you associate (with Allah)
لَيَحۡبَطَنَّ
layahbatanna
surely will become worthless
عَمَلُكَ
amaluka
your deeds
وَلَتَكُونَنَّ
walatakunanna
and you will surely be
مِنَ
mina
among
ٱلۡخَٰسِرِينَ
al-khasirina
the losers
٦٥

It has already been revealed to you [Prophet] and to those before you: ‘If you ascribe any partner to God, all your work will come to nothing: you will be one if the losers

Translation 1260

39:66
بَلِ
bali
Nay
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
But worship Allah
فَٱعۡبُدۡ
fa-u'bud
But worship Allah
وَكُن
wakun
and be
مِّنَ
mina
among
ٱلشَّٰكِرِينَ
al-shakirina
the thankful ones
٦٦

No! Worship God alone and be one of those who are grateful to Him.’

Translation 1260

39:67
وَمَا
wama
And not
قَدَرُواْ
qadaru
they appraised
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
حَقَّ
haqqa
(with) true
قَدۡرِهِۦ
qadrihi
appraisal
وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ
wal-ardu
while the earth
جَمِيعٗا
jami'an
entirely
قَبۡضَتُهُۥ
qabdatuhu
(will be) in His Grip
يَوۡمَ
yawma
(on the) Day
ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ
al-qiyamati
(of) the Resurrection
وَٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ
wal-samawatu
and the heavens
مَطۡوِيَّٰتُۢ
matwiyyatun
(will be) folded
بِيَمِينِهِۦۚ
biyaminihi
in His Right Hand
سُبۡحَٰنَهُۥ
sub'hanahu
Glory be to Him
وَتَعَٰلَىٰ
wata'ala
And High is He
عَمَّا
amma
above what
يُشۡرِكُونَ
yush'rikuna
they associate (with Him)
٦٧

These people have no grasp of God’s true measure. On the Day of Resurrection, the whole earth will be in His grip. The heavens will be rolled up in His right hand- Glory be to Him! He is far above the partners they ascribe to Him

وَنُفِخَ

And (will) be blown

ٱلصُّورِ

the trumpet
فَصَعِقَ
fasa'iqa
then (will) fall dead
مَن

whoever
فِي

ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
al-samawati
the heavens
وَمَن
waman
and whoever
فِي
fi
(is) on
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the earth
إِلَّا
illa
except
مَن
man
whom
شَآءَ
shaa
Allah wills
ٱللَّهُۖ
al-lahu
Allah wills
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
نُفِخَ
nufikha
(it will) be blown
فِيهِ
fihi
[in it]
أُخۡرَىٰ
ukh'ra
a second time
فَإِذَا
fa-idha
and behold
هُمۡ
hum
They
قِيَامٞ
qiyamun
(will be) standing
يَنظُرُونَ
yanzuruna
waiting
٦٨

the Trumpet will be sounded, and everyone in the heavens and earth will fall down senseless except those God spares. It will be sounded once again and they will be on their feet, looking on

Translation 1260

39:69
وَأَشۡرَقَتِ
wa-ashraqati
And (will) shine
ٱلۡأَرۡضُ
al-ardu
the earth
بِنُورِ
binuri
with (the) light
رَبِّهَا
rabbiha
(of) its Lord
وَوُضِعَ
wawudi'a
and (will) be placed
ٱلۡكِتَٰبُ
al-kitabu
the Record
وَجِاْيٓءَ
wajia
and (will) be brought
بِٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ
bil-nabiyina
the Prophets
وَٱلشُّهَدَآءِ
wal-shuhadai
and the witnesses
وَقُضِيَ
waqudiya
and it (will) be judged
بَيۡنَهُم
baynahum
between them
بِٱلۡحَقِّ
bil-haqi
in truth
وَهُمۡ
wahum
and they
لَا
la
will not be wronged
يُظۡلَمُونَ
yuz'lamuna
will not be wronged
٦٩

The earth will shine with the light of its Lord; the Record of Deeds will be laid open; the prophets and witnesses will be brought in. Fair judgement will be given between them: they will not be wronged

39:70
وَوُفِّيَتۡ
wawuffiyat
And (will) be paid in full
كُلُّ
kullu
every
نَفۡسٖ
nafsin
soul
مَّا
ma
what
عَمِلَتۡ
amilat
it did
وَهُوَ
wahuwa
and He
أَعۡلَمُ
a'lamu
(is the) Best-Knower
بِمَا
bima
of what
يَفۡعَلُونَ
yaf 'aluna
they do
٧٠

and every soul will be repaid in full for what it has done. He knows best what they do

39:71
وَسِيقَ
wasiqa
And (will) be driven
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
كَفَرُوٓاْ
kafaru
disbelieve
إِلَىٰ
ila
to
جَهَنَّمَ
jahannama
Hell
زُمَرًاۖ
zumaran
(in) groups
حَتَّىٰٓ
hatta
until
إِذَا
idha
when
جَآءُوهَا
jauha
they reach it
فُتِحَتۡ
futihat
(will) be opened
أَبۡوَٰبُهَا
abwabuha
its gates
وَقَالَ
waqala
and (will) say
لَهُمۡ
lahum
to them
خَزَنَتُهَآ
khazanatuha
its keepers
أَلَمۡ
alam
Did not
يَأۡتِكُمۡ
yatikum
come to you
رُسُلٞ
rusulun
Messengers
مِّنكُمۡ
minkum
from you
يَتۡلُونَ
yatluna
reciting
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
alaykum
to you
ءَايَٰتِ
ayati
(the) Verses
رَبِّكُمۡ
rabbikum
(of) your Lord
وَيُنذِرُونَكُمۡ
wayundhirunakum
and warning you
لِقَآءَ
liqaa
(of the) meeting
يَوۡمِكُمۡ
yawmikum
(of) your Day
هَٰذَاۚ
hadha
this
قَالُواْ
qalu
They (will) say
بَلَىٰ
bala
Yes
وَلَٰكِنۡ
walakin
But
حَقَّتۡ
haqqat
has been justified
كَلِمَةُ
kalimatu
(the) word
ٱلۡعَذَابِ
al-'adhabi
(of) punishment
عَلَى
ala
against
ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
al-kafirina
the disbelievers
٧١

Those who rejected the Truth will be led to Hell in their throngs. When they arrive, its gates will open and its keepers will say to them, ‘Were you not sent your own messengers to recite the revelations of your Lord to you and warn you that you would meet this Day?’ and they will say, ‘Yes indeed we were.’ But the sentence of punishment will have been passed against those who rejected the truth

Translation 1260

39:72
قِيلَ
qila
It will be said
ٱدۡخُلُوٓاْ
ud'khulu
Enter
أَبۡوَٰبَ
abwaba
(the) gates
جَهَنَّمَ
jahannama
(of) Hell
خَٰلِدِينَ
khalidina
(to) abide eternally
فِيهَاۖ
fiha
therein
فَبِئۡسَ
fabi'sa
and wretched is
مَثۡوَى
mathwa
(the) abode
ٱلۡمُتَكَبِّرِينَ
al-mutakabirina
(of) the arrogant
٧٢

It will be said, ‘Enter the gates of Hell: there you will remain. How evil is the abode of the arrogant!’

Translation 1260

39:73
وَسِيقَ
wasiqa
And (will) be driven
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
ٱتَّقَوۡاْ
ittaqaw
feared
رَبَّهُمۡ
rabbahum
their Lord
إِلَى
ila
to
ٱلۡجَنَّةِ
al-janati
Paradise
زُمَرًاۖ
zumaran
(in) groups
حَتَّىٰٓ
hatta
until
إِذَا
idha
when
جَآءُوهَا
jauha
they reach it
وَفُتِحَتۡ
wafutihat
and (will) be opened
أَبۡوَٰبُهَا
abwabuha
its gates
وَقَالَ
waqala
and (will) say
لَهُمۡ
lahum
to them
خَزَنَتُهَا
khazanatuha
its keepers
سَلَٰمٌ
salamun
Peace be
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
alaykum
upon you
طِبۡتُمۡ
tib'tum
you have done well
فَٱدۡخُلُوهَا
fa-ud'khuluha
so enter it
خَٰلِدِينَ
khalidina
(to) abide eternally
٧٣

Those who were mindful of their Lord will be led in throngs to the Garden. When they arrive, they will find its gates wide open, and its keepers will say to them, ‘Peace be upon you. You have been good. Come in: you are here to stay,’

Translation 1260

39:74
وَقَالُواْ
waqalu
And they will say
ٱلۡحَمۡدُ
al-hamdu
All praise
لِلَّهِ
lillahi
(be) to Allah
ٱلَّذِي
alladhi
Who
صَدَقَنَا
sadaqana
has fulfilled for us
وَعۡدَهُۥ
wa'dahu
His promise
وَأَوۡرَثَنَا
wa-awrathana
and has made us inherit
ٱلۡأَرۡضَ
al-arda
the earth
نَتَبَوَّأُ
natabawwa-u
we may settle
مِنَ
mina
[from]
ٱلۡجَنَّةِ
al-janati
(in) Paradise
حَيۡثُ
haythu
wherever
نَشَآءُۖ
nashau
we wish
فَنِعۡمَ
fani'ma
So excellent
أَجۡرُ
ajru
(is the) reward
ٱلۡعَٰمِلِينَ
al-'amilina
(of) the workers
٧٤

and they will say, ‘Praise be to God who has kept His promise to us and given us this land as our own. Now we may live wherever we please in the Garden.’ How excellent is the reward of those who labour

And you will see
ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ

the Angels
حَآفِّينَ
haffina
surrounding
مِنۡ

[from]
حَوۡلِ
hawli
around
ٱلۡعَرۡشِ
al-'arshi
the Throne
يُسَبِّحُونَ
yusabbihuna
glorifying
بِحَمۡدِ
bihamdi
(the) praise
رَبِّهِمۡۚ
rabbihim
(of) their Lord
وَقُضِيَ
waqudiya
And (will) be judged
بَيۡنَهُم
baynahum
between them
بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ
bil-haqi
in truth
وَقِيلَ
waqila
and it will be said
ٱلۡحَمۡدُ
al-hamdu
All praise be
لِلَّهِ
lillahi
to Allah
رَبِّ
rabbi
(the) Lord
ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ
al-'alamina
(of) the worlds
٧٥

You [Prophet] will see the angels surrounding the Throne, glorifying their Lord with praise. True judgement will have been passed between them, and it will be said, ‘Praise be to God, the Lord of the Worlds.’

(The) revelation
ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ
al-kitabi
(of) the Book
مِنَ
mina
(is) from
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
ٱلۡعَزِيزِ
al-'azizi
the All-Mighty
ٱلۡعَلِيمِ
al-'alimi
the All-Knower
٢

This Scripture is sent down from God, the Almighty, the All Knowing

Translation 1260

40:3
غَافِرِ
ghafiri
(The) Forgiver
ٱلذَّنۢبِ
al-dhanbi
(of) the sin
وَقَابِلِ
waqabili
and (the) Acceptor
ٱلتَّوۡبِ
al-tawbi
(of) [the] repentance
شَدِيدِ
shadidi
severe
ٱلۡعِقَابِ
al-'iqabi
(in) the punishment
ذِي
dhi
Owner (of) the abundance
ٱلطَّوۡلِۖ
al-tawli
Owner (of) the abundance
لَآ
la
(There is) no
إِلَٰهَ
ilaha
god
إِلَّا
illa
except
هُوَۖ
huwa
Him
إِلَيۡهِ
ilayhi
to Him
ٱلۡمَصِيرُ
al-masiru
(is) the final return
٣

Forgiver of sins and Accepter of repentance, severe in punishment, infinite in bounty. There is no god but Him; to Him is the ultimate return

40:4
مَا

يُجَٰدِلُ
yujadilu
dispute
فِيٓ
fi
concerning
ءَايَٰتِ
ayati
(the) Verses
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
إِلَّا
illa
except
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
كَفَرُواْ
kafaru
disbelieve
فَلَا
fala
so (let) not
يَغۡرُرۡكَ
yaghrur'ka
deceive you
تَقَلُّبُهُمۡ
taqallubuhum
their movement
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡبِلَٰدِ
al-biladi
the cities
٤

It is only the disbelievers who dispute God’s revelations. [Prophet], do not be dazzled by their movements back and forth across the land

Translation 1260

40:5
كَذَّبَتۡ
kadhabat
Denied
قَبۡلَهُمۡ
qablahum
before them
قَوۡمُ
qawmu
(the) people
نُوحٖ
nuhin
(of) Nuh
وَٱلۡأَحۡزَابُ
wal-ahzabu
and the factions
مِنۢ
min
after them
بَعۡدِهِمۡۖ
ba'dihim
after them
وَهَمَّتۡ
wahammat
and plotted
كُلُّ
kullu
every
أُمَّةِۭ
ummatin
nation
بِرَسُولِهِمۡ
birasulihim
against their Messenger
لِيَأۡخُذُوهُۖ
liyakhudhuhu
to seize him
وَجَٰدَلُواْ
wajadalu
and they disputed
بِٱلۡبَٰطِلِ
bil-batili
by falsehood
لِيُدۡحِضُواْ
liyud'hidu
to refute
بِهِ
bihi
thereby
ٱلۡحَقَّ
al-haqa
the truth
فَأَخَذۡتُهُمۡۖ
fa-akhadhtuhum
So I seized them
فَكَيۡفَ
fakayfa
Then how
كَانَ
kana
was
عِقَابِ
iqabi
My penalty
٥

Before them the people of Noah rejected the truth and so did those who formed opposition after them: every community schemed to destroy its messenger and strove to refute truth with falsehood; but it was I who destroyed them. How terrible My punishment was

Translation 1260

40:6
وَكَذَٰلِكَ
wakadhalika
And thus
حَقَّتۡ
haqqat
has been justified
كَلِمَتُ
kalimatu
(the) Word
رَبِّكَ
rabbika
(of) your Lord
عَلَى
ala
against
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
كَفَرُوٓاْ
kafaru
disbelieved
أَنَّهُمۡ
annahum
that they
أَصۡحَٰبُ
ashabu
(are) companions
ٱلنَّارِ
al-nari
(of) the Fire
٦

In this way your Lord’s sentence was passed against the disbelievers that they would be the inhabitants of the Fire

Translation 1260

40:7
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
Those who
يَحۡمِلُونَ
yahmiluna
bear
ٱلۡعَرۡشَ
al-'arsha
the Throne
وَمَنۡ
waman
and who
حَوۡلَهُۥ
hawlahu
(are) around it
يُسَبِّحُونَ
yusabbihuna
glorify
بِحَمۡدِ
bihamdi
(the) praises
رَبِّهِمۡ
rabbihim
(of) their Lord
وَيُؤۡمِنُونَ
wayu'minuna
and believe
بِهِۦ
bihi
in Him
وَيَسۡتَغۡفِرُونَ
wayastaghfiruna
and ask forgiveness
لِلَّذِينَ
lilladhina
for those who
ءَامَنُواْۖ
amanu
believe
رَبَّنَا
rabbana
Our Lord
وَسِعۡتَ
wasi'ta
You encompass
كُلَّ
kulla
all
شَيۡءٖ
shayin
things
رَّحۡمَةٗ
rahmatan
(by Your) Mercy
وَعِلۡمٗا
wa'il'man
and knowledge
فَٱغۡفِرۡ
fa-igh'fir
so forgive
لِلَّذِينَ
lilladhina
those who
تَابُواْ
tabu
repent
وَٱتَّبَعُواْ
wa-ittaba'u
and follow
سَبِيلَكَ
sabilaka
Your Way
وَقِهِمۡ
waqihim
and save them (from)
عَذَابَ
adhaba
(the) punishment
ٱلۡجَحِيمِ
al-jahimi
(of) the Hellfire
٧

Those [angels] who carry the Throne and those who surround it celebrate the praise of their Lord and have faith in Him. They beg forgiveness for the believers: ‘Our Lord, You embrace all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who turn to You and follow Your path. Save them from the pains of Hell

وَأَدۡخِلۡهُمۡ
wa-adkhil'hum
And admit them
جَنَّٰتِ
jannati
(to) Gardens
عَدۡنٍ
adnin
(of) Eden
ٱلَّتِي
allati
which
وَعَدتَّهُمۡ
wa'adttahum
You have promised them
وَمَن
waman
and whoever
صَلَحَ
salaha
(was) righteous
مِنۡ
min
among
ءَابَآئِهِمۡ
abaihim
their fathers
وَأَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡ
wa-azwajihim
and their spouses
وَذُرِّيَّٰتِهِمۡۚ
wadhurriyyatihim
and their offspring
إِنَّكَ
innaka
Indeed You
أَنتَ
anta
You
ٱلۡعَزِيزُ
al-'azizu
(are) the All-Mighty
ٱلۡحَكِيمُ
al-hakimu
the All-Wise
٨

and admit them, Lord, to the lasting Gardens You have promised to them, together with their righteous ancestors, spouses, and offspring: You alone are the Almighty, the All Wise

Translation 1260

40:9
وَقِهِمُ
waqihimu
And protect them
ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِۚ
al-sayiati
(from) the evils
وَمَن
waman
And whoever
تَقِ
taqi
you protect
ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ
al-sayiati
(from) the evils
يَوۡمَئِذٖ
yawma-idhin
that Day
فَقَدۡ
faqad
then verily
رَحِمۡتَهُۥۚ
rahim'tahu
You have bestowed mercy on him
وَذَٰلِكَ
wadhalika
And that
هُوَ
huwa
[it]
ٱلۡفَوۡزُ
al-fawzu
(is) the success
ٱلۡعَظِيمُ
al-'azimu
the great
٩

Protect them from all evil deeds: those You protect on that Day from [the punishment for] evil deeds will receive Your mercy- that is the supreme triumph.’

Translation 1260

40:10
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
كَفَرُواْ
kafaru
disbelieved
يُنَادَوۡنَ
yunadawna
will be cried out to them
لَمَقۡتُ
lamaqtu
Certainly Allah's hatred
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Certainly Allah's hatred
أَكۡبَرُ
akbaru
(was) greater
مِن
min
than
مَّقۡتِكُمۡ
maqtikum
your hatred
أَنفُسَكُمۡ
anfusakum
(of) yourselves
إِذۡ
idh
when
تُدۡعَوۡنَ
tud'awna
you were called
إِلَى
ila
to
ٱلۡإِيمَٰنِ
al-imani
the faith
فَتَكۡفُرُونَ
fatakfuruna
and you disbelieved
١٠

But those who disbelieved will be told, ‘When you were called to the faith and rejected it, God’s disgust with you was even greater then than the self-disgust you feel [today].’

Translation 1260

40:11
قَالُواْ
qalu
They (will) say
رَبَّنَآ
rabbana
Our Lord
أَمَتَّنَا
amattana
You gave us death
ٱثۡنَتَيۡنِ
ith'natayni
twice
وَأَحۡيَيۡتَنَا
wa-ahyaytana
and You gave us life
ٱثۡنَتَيۡنِ
ith'natayni
twice
فَٱعۡتَرَفۡنَا
fa-i'tarafna
and we confess
بِذُنُوبِنَا
bidhunubina
our sins
فَهَلۡ
fahal
So is (there)
إِلَىٰ
ila
to
خُرُوجٖ
khurujin
get out
مِّن
min
any
سَبِيلٖ
sabilin
way
١١

They will say, ‘Our Lord, twice You have caused us to be lifeless and twice You have brought us to life. Now we recognize our sins. Is there any way out?’

Translation 1260

40:12
ذَٰلِكُم
dhalikum
That
بِأَنَّهُۥٓ
bi-annahu
(is) because
إِذَا
idha
when
دُعِيَ
du'iya
Allah was invoked
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah was invoked
وَحۡدَهُۥ
wahdahu
Alone
كَفَرۡتُمۡ
kafartum
you disbelieved
وَإِن
wa-in
but if
يُشۡرَكۡ
yush'rak
(others) were associated
بِهِۦ
bihi
with Him
تُؤۡمِنُواْۚ
tu'minu

فَٱلۡحُكۡمُ
fal-huk'mu
So the judgment
لِلَّهِ
lillahi
(is) with Allah
ٱلۡعَلِيِّ
al-'aliyi
the Most High
ٱلۡكَبِيرِ
al-kabiri
the Most Great
١٢

[They will be told], ‘This is all because when God alone was invoked you rejected this, yet when others were associated with Him you believed [in them].’ Judgement belongs to God the Most High, the Most Great

40:13
هُوَ
huwa
He
ٱلَّذِي
alladhi
(is) the One Who
يُرِيكُمۡ
yurikum
shows you
ءَايَٰتِهِۦ
ayatihi
His Signs
وَيُنَزِّلُ
wayunazzilu
and sends down
لَكُم
lakum
for you
مِّنَ
mina
from
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
al-samai
the sky
رِزۡقٗاۚ
riz'qan
provision
وَمَا
wama
But (does) not
يَتَذَكَّرُ
yatadhakkaru
take heed
إِلَّا
illa
except
مَن
man
(one) who
يُنِيبُ
yunibu
turns
١٣

It is He who shows you [people] His signs and sends water down from the sky to sustain you, though only those who turn to God will take heed

40:14
فَٱدۡعُواْ
fa-id'u
So invoke
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
مُخۡلِصِينَ
mukh'lisina
(being) sincere
لَهُ
lahu
to Him
ٱلدِّينَ
al-dina
(in) the religion
وَلَوۡ
walaw
even though
كَرِهَ
kariha
dislike (it)
ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ
al-kafiruna
the disbelievers
١٤

So call upon God and dedicate your religion to Him alone, however hateful this may be to the disbelievers

ٱلدَّرَجَٰتِ
al-darajati
Possessor of the Highest Ranks
ذُو

Owner (of) the Throne
ٱلۡعَرۡشِ

Owner (of) the Throne
يُلۡقِي
yul'qi
He places
ٱلرُّوحَ
al-ruha
the inspiration
مِنۡ
min
of
أَمۡرِهِۦ
amrihi
His Command
عَلَىٰ
ala
upon
مَن
man
whom
يَشَآءُ
yashau
He wills
مِنۡ
min
of
عِبَادِهِۦ
ibadihi
His slaves
لِيُنذِرَ
liyundhira
to warn
يَوۡمَ
yawma
(of the) Day
ٱلتَّلَاقِ
al-talaqi
(of) the Meeting
١٥

He is exalted in rank, the Lord of the Throne. He sends revelations with His teachings to whichever of His servants He will, in order to warn of the Day of Meeting

40:16
يَوۡمَ

يَخۡفَىٰ

is hidden
عَلَى
ala

ٱللَّهِ

لِّمَنِ

For whom
ٱلۡمُلۡكُ
al-mul'ku
(is) the Dominion
ٱلۡيَوۡمَۖ
al-yawma
this Day
لِلَّهِ
lillahi
For Allah
ٱلۡوَٰحِدِ
al-wahidi
the One
ٱلۡقَهَّارِ
al-qahari
the Irresistible
١٦

the Day when they will come out and nothing about them will be concealed from God. ‘Who has control today?’ ‘God, the One, the All Powerful

Indeed
ٱللَّهَ

سَرِيعُ

(is) Swift
ٱلۡحِسَابِ
al-hisabi
(in) Account
١٧

Today each soul will be rewarded for whatever it has done; today no injustice will be done. God is swift in reckoning.’

40:18
وَأَنذِرۡهُمۡ
wa-andhir'hum
And warn them
يَوۡمَ
yawma
(of the) Day
ٱلۡأٓزِفَةِ
al-azifati
the Approaching
إِذِ
idhi
when
ٱلۡقُلُوبُ
al-qulubu
the hearts
لَدَى
lada
(are) at
ٱلۡحَنَاجِرِ
al-hanajiri
the throats
كَٰظِمِينَۚ
kazimina
choked
مَا
ma
Not
لِلظَّٰلِمِينَ
lilzzalimina
for the wrongdoers
مِنۡ
min
any
حَمِيمٖ
hamimin
intimate friend
وَلَا
wala
and no
شَفِيعٖ
shafi'in
intercessor
يُطَاعُ
yuta'u
(who) is obeyed
١٨

Warn them [Prophet] of the ever-approaching Day, when hearts are at throats, choking them. The evildoer will have no friends, nor any intercessor to be heeded

40:19
يَعۡلَمُ
ya'lamu
He knows
خَآئِنَةَ
khainata
(the) stealthy glance
ٱلۡأَعۡيُنِ
al-a'yuni
(the) stealthy glance
وَمَا
wama
and what
تُخۡفِي
tukh'fi
conceal
ٱلصُّدُورُ
al-suduru
the breasts
١٩

God is aware of the most furtive of glances, and of all that hearts conceal

40:20
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
And Allah
يَقۡضِي
yaqdi
judges
بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ
bil-haqi
in truth
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhina
while those (whom)
يَدۡعُونَ
yad'una
they invoke
مِن
min
besides Him
دُونِهِۦ
dunihi
besides Him
لَا
la
not
يَقۡضُونَ
yaqduna
they judge
بِشَيۡءٍۗ
bishayin
with anything
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
هُوَ
huwa
He
ٱلسَّمِيعُ
al-sami'u
(is) the All-Hearer
ٱلۡبَصِيرُ
al-basiru
the All-Seer
٢٠

God will judge with truth, while those they invoke besides Him will not judge at all. God is the All Hearing, the All Seeing

40:21
۞أَوَلَمۡ

Do not
يَسِيرُواْ
yasiru
they travel
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the earth
فَيَنظُرُواْ
fayanzuru
and see
كَيۡفَ
kayfa
how
كَانَ
kana
was
عَٰقِبَةُ
aqibatu
(the) end
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
(of) those who
كَانُواْ
kanu
were
مِن
min
before them
قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ
qablihim
before them
كَانُواْ
kanu
They were
هُمۡ
hum
[they]
أَشَدَّ
ashadda
superior
مِنۡهُمۡ
min'hum
to them
قُوَّةٗ
quwwatan
(in) strength
وَءَاثَارٗا
waatharan
and (in) impressions
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the land
فَأَخَذَهُمُ
fa-akhadhahumu
but Allah seized them
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
but Allah seized them
بِذُنُوبِهِمۡ
bidhunubihim
for their sins
وَمَا
wama
and not
كَانَ
kana
was
لَهُم
lahum
for them
مِّنَ
mina
against
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
مِن
min
any
وَاقٖ
waqin
protector
٢١

Have they not travelled through the land and seen how those who lived before them met their end? They were stronger than them and made a more impressive mark on the land, yet God destroyed them for their sins- they had no one to defend them against Him

40:22
ذَٰلِكَ
dhalika
That
بِأَنَّهُمۡ
bi-annahum
(was) because [they]
كَانَت
kanat
used to come to them
تَّأۡتِيهِمۡ
tatihim
used to come to them
رُسُلُهُم
rusuluhum
their Messengers
بِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِ
bil-bayinati
with clear proofs
فَكَفَرُواْ
fakafaru
but they disbelieved
فَأَخَذَهُمُ
fa-akhadhahumu
So Allah seized them
ٱللَّهُۚ
al-lahu
So Allah seized them
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed He
قَوِيّٞ
qawiyyun
(is) All-Strong
شَدِيدُ
shadidu
severe
ٱلۡعِقَابِ
al-'iqabi
(in) punishment
٢٢

because messengers repeatedly came to them with clear signs and still they rejected them. God destroyed them: He is truly full of strength, severe in punishment

40:23
وَلَقَدۡ
walaqad
And certainly
أَرۡسَلۡنَا
arsalna
We sent
مُوسَىٰ
musa
Musa
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا
biayatina
with Our Signs
وَسُلۡطَٰنٖ
wasul'tanin
and an authority
مُّبِينٍ
mubinin
clear
٢٣

We sent Moses with Our signs and clear authority

40:24
إِلَىٰ
ila
To
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
fir'awna
Firaun
وَهَٰمَٰنَ
wahamana
Haman
وَقَٰرُونَ
waqaruna
and Qarun
فَقَالُواْ
faqalu
but they said
سَٰحِرٞ
sahirun
A magician
كَذَّابٞ
kadhabun
a liar
٢٤

to Pharaoh, Haman, and Korah and they said, ‘Sorcerer! Liar!’

40:25
فَلَمَّا
falamma
Then when
جَآءَهُم
jaahum
he brought to them
بِٱلۡحَقِّ
bil-haqi
the truth
مِنۡ
min
from
عِندِنَا
indina
Us
قَالُواْ
qalu
they said
ٱقۡتُلُوٓاْ
uq'tulu
Kill
أَبۡنَآءَ
abnaa
(the) sons
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
(of) those who
ءَامَنُواْ
amanu
believe
مَعَهُۥ
ma'ahu
with him
وَٱسۡتَحۡيُواْ
wa-is'tahyu
and let live
نِسَآءَهُمۡۚ
nisaahum
their women
وَمَا
wama
And not
كَيۡدُ
kaydu
(is the) plot
ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
al-kafirina
(of) the disbelievers
إِلَّا
illa
but
فِي
fi
in
ضَلَٰلٖ
dalalin
error
٢٥

When he brought the truth to them from Us, they said, ‘Kill the sons of those who believe with him; spare only their women’- the scheming of those who reject the truth can only go wrong

رَبَّهُۥٓۖ

his Lord
إِنِّيٓ

Indeed I
أَخَافُ
akhafu
[I] fear
أَن
an
that
يُبَدِّلَ
yubaddila
he will change
دِينَكُمۡ
dinakum
your religion
أَوۡ
aw
or
أَن
an
that
يُظۡهِرَ
yuz'hira
he may cause to appear
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the land
ٱلۡفَسَادَ
al-fasada
the corruption
٢٦

and Pharaoh said, ‘Leave me to kill Moses- let him call upon his Lord!- for I fear he may cause you to change your religion, or spread disorder in the land.’

40:27
وَقَالَ
waqala
And said
مُوسَىٰٓ
musa
Musa
إِنِّي
inni
Indeed I
عُذۡتُ
udh'tu
[I] seek refuge
بِرَبِّي
birabbi
in my Lord
وَرَبِّكُم
warabbikum
and your Lord
مِّن
min
from
كُلِّ
kulli
every
مُتَكَبِّرٖ
mutakabbirin
arrogant one
لَّا
la
not
يُؤۡمِنُ
yu'minu
who believes
بِيَوۡمِ
biyawmi
(in the) Day
ٱلۡحِسَابِ
al-hisabi
(of) the Account
٢٧

Moses said, ‘I seek refuge with my Lord and yours from every tyrant who refuses to believe in the Day of Reckoning.’

40:28
وَقَالَ
waqala
And said
رَجُلٞ
rajulun
a man
مُّؤۡمِنٞ
mu'minun
believing
مِّنۡ
min
from
ءَالِ
ali
(the) family
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
fir'awna
(of) Firaun
يَكۡتُمُ
yaktumu
who conceal(ed)
إِيمَٰنَهُۥٓ
imanahu
his faith
أَتَقۡتُلُونَ
ataqtuluna
Will you kill
رَجُلًا
rajulan
a man
أَن
an
because
يَقُولَ
yaqula
he says
رَبِّيَ
rabbiya
My Lord
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
(is) Allah
وَقَدۡ
waqad
and indeed
جَآءَكُم
jaakum
he has brought you
بِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِ
bil-bayinati
clear proofs
مِن
min
from
رَّبِّكُمۡۖ
rabbikum
your Lord
وَإِن
wa-in
And if
يَكُ
yaku
he is
كَٰذِبٗا
kadhiban
a liar
فَعَلَيۡهِ
fa'alayhi
then upon him
كَذِبُهُۥۖ
kadhibuhu
(is) his lie
وَإِن
wa-in
and if
يَكُ
yaku
he is
صَادِقٗا
sadiqan
truthful
يُصِبۡكُم
yusib'kum
(there) will strike you
بَعۡضُ
ba'du
some (of)
ٱلَّذِي
alladhi
(that) which
يَعِدُكُمۡۖ
ya'idukum
he threatens you
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
لَا
la
(does) not
يَهۡدِي
yahdi
guide
مَنۡ
man
(one) who
هُوَ
huwa
[he]
مُسۡرِفٞ
mus'rifun
(is) a transgressor
كَذَّابٞ
kadhabun
a liar
٢٨

A secret believer from Pharaoh’s family said, ‘How can you kill a man just for saying, “My Lord is God”? He has brought you clear signs from your Lord- if he is a liar, on his own head be it- and if he is truthful, then at least some of what he has threatened will happen to you. God does not guide any rebellious, outrageous liar

40:29
يَٰقَوۡمِ
yaqawmi
O my people
لَكُمُ
lakumu
For you
ٱلۡمُلۡكُ
al-mul'ku
(is) the kingdom
ٱلۡيَوۡمَ
al-yawma
today
ظَٰهِرِينَ
zahirina
dominant
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the land
فَمَن
faman
but who
يَنصُرُنَا
yansuruna
will help us
مِنۢ
min
from
بَأۡسِ
basi
(the) punishment
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
إِن
in
if
جَآءَنَاۚ
jaana
it came to us
قَالَ
qala
Said
فِرۡعَوۡنُ
fir'awnu
Firaun
مَآ
ma
Not
أُرِيكُمۡ
urikum
I show you
إِلَّا
illa
except
مَآ
ma
what
أَرَىٰ
ara
I see
وَمَآ
wama
and not
أَهۡدِيكُمۡ
ahdikum
I guide you
إِلَّا
illa
except
سَبِيلَ
sabila
(to the) path
ٱلرَّشَادِ
al-rashadi
the right
٢٩

My people, as masters in the land you have the power today, but who will help us against God’s might if it comes upon us?’ But Pharaoh said, ‘I have told you what I think; I am guiding you along the right path.’

40:30
وَقَالَ
waqala
And said
ٱلَّذِيٓ
alladhi

ءَامَنَ
amana
believed
يَٰقَوۡمِ
yaqawmi
O my people
إِنِّيٓ
inni
Indeed I
أَخَافُ
akhafu
[I] fear
عَلَيۡكُم
alaykum
for you
مِّثۡلَ
mith'la
like
يَوۡمِ
yawmi
(the) day
ٱلۡأَحۡزَابِ
al-ahzabi
(of) the companies
٣٠

The believer said, ‘My people, I fear your fate will be the fate of those others who opposed [their prophets]

40:31
مِثۡلَ

Like
دَأۡبِ
dabi
(the) plight
قَوۡمِ
qawmi
(of the) people
نُوحٖ
nuhin
(of) Nuh
وَعَادٖ
wa'adin
and Aad
وَثَمُودَ
wathamuda
and Thamud
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhina
and those
مِنۢ
min
after them
بَعۡدِهِمۡۚ
ba'dihim
after them
وَمَا
wama
And Allah (does) not
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
And Allah (does) not
يُرِيدُ
yuridu
want
ظُلۡمٗا
zul'man
injustice
لِّلۡعِبَادِ
lil'ibadi
for (His) slaves
٣١

the fate of the people of Noah, Ad, Thamud, and those who came after them- God never wills injustice on His creatures

40:32
وَيَٰقَوۡمِ
wayaqawmi
And O my people
إِنِّيٓ
inni
Indeed I
أَخَافُ
akhafu
[I] fear
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
alaykum
for you
يَوۡمَ
yawma
(the) Day
ٱلتَّنَادِ
al-tanadi
(of) Calling
٣٢

My people, I fear for you on the Day you will cry out to one another

40:33
يَوۡمَ

A Day
تُوَلُّونَ
tuwalluna
you will turn back
مُدۡبِرِينَ
mud'birina
fleeing
مَا
ma
not
لَكُم
lakum
for you
مِّنَ
mina
from
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
مِنۡ
min
any
عَاصِمٖۗ
asimin
protector
وَمَن
waman
And whoever
يُضۡلِلِ
yud'lili
Allah lets go astray
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah lets go astray
فَمَا
fama
then not
لَهُۥ
lahu
for him
مِنۡ
min
any
هَادٖ
hadin
guide
٣٣

the Day you will turn tail and flee with no one to defend you from God! Whoever God leaves to stray will have no one to guide him

حَتَّىٰٓ

until
إِذَا

هَلَكَ
halaka
he died
قُلۡتُمۡ
qul'tum
you said
لَن
lan
Never
يَبۡعَثَ
yab'atha
will Allah raise
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
will Allah raise
مِنۢ
min
after him
بَعۡدِهِۦ
ba'dihi
after him
رَسُولٗاۚ
rasulan
a Messenger
كَذَٰلِكَ
kadhalika
Thus
يُضِلُّ
yudillu
Allah lets go astray
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah lets go astray
مَنۡ
man
who
هُوَ
huwa
[he]
مُسۡرِفٞ
mus'rifun
(is) a transgressor
مُّرۡتَابٌ
mur'tabun
a doubter
٣٤

Joseph came to you before with clear signs, but you never ceased to doubt the message he brought you. When he died, you said, “God will not send another messenger.”’ In this way God leaves the doubting rebels to stray

40:35
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
Those who
يُجَٰدِلُونَ
yujadiluna
dispute
فِيٓ
fi
concerning
ءَايَٰتِ
ayati
(the) Signs
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
بِغَيۡرِ
bighayri
without
سُلۡطَٰنٍ
sul'tanin
any authority
أَتَىٰهُمۡۖ
atahum
(having) come to them
كَبُرَ
kabura
(it) is greatly
مَقۡتًا
maqtan
hateful
عِندَ
inda
near Allah
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
near Allah
وَعِندَ
wa'inda
and near
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those
ءَامَنُواْۚ
amanu
who believe
كَذَٰلِكَ
kadhalika
Thus
يَطۡبَعُ
yatba'u
Allah sets a seal
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah sets a seal
عَلَىٰ
ala
over
كُلِّ
kulli
every
قَلۡبِ
qalbi
heart
مُتَكَبِّرٖ
mutakabbirin
(of) an arrogant
جَبَّارٖ
jabbarin
tyrant
٣٥

those who dispute God’s messages, with no authority given to them, are doing something that is loathed by God and by those who believe. In this way God seals up the heart of every arrogant tyrant

40:36
وَقَالَ
waqala
And said
فِرۡعَوۡنُ
fir'awnu
Firaun
يَٰهَٰمَٰنُ
yahamanu
O Haman
ٱبۡنِ
ib'ni
Construct
لِي
li
for me
صَرۡحٗا
sarhan
a tower
لَّعَلِّيٓ
la'alli
that I may
أَبۡلُغُ
ablughu
reach
ٱلۡأَسۡبَٰبَ
al-asbaba
the ways
٣٦

Pharaoh said, ‘Haman, build me a tall tower so that I may reach the ropes that lead

40:37
أَسۡبَٰبَ
asbaba
(The) ways
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
al-samawati
(to) the heavens
فَأَطَّلِعَ
fa-attali'a
so I may look
إِلَىٰٓ
ila
at
إِلَٰهِ
ilahi
(the) God
مُوسَىٰ
musa
(of) Musa
وَإِنِّي
wa-inni
and indeed I
لَأَظُنُّهُۥ
la-azunnuhu
[I] surely think him
كَٰذِبٗاۚ
kadhiban
(to be) a liar
وَكَذَٰلِكَ
wakadhalika
And thus
زُيِّنَ
zuyyina
was made fair-seeming
لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ
lifir'awna
to Firaun
سُوٓءُ
suu
(the) evil
عَمَلِهِۦ
amalihi
(of) his deed
وَصُدَّ
wasudda
and he was averted
عَنِ
ani
from
ٱلسَّبِيلِۚ
al-sabili
the way
وَمَا
wama
And not
كَيۡدُ
kaydu
(was the) plot
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
fir'awna
(of) Firaun
إِلَّا
illa
except
فِي
fi
in
تَبَابٖ
tababin
ruin
٣٧

to the heavens to look for this God of Moses. I am convinced that he is lying.’ In this way the evil of Pharaoh’s deed was made alluring to him and he was barred from the right path- his scheming led only to ruin

40:38
وَقَالَ
waqala
And said
ٱلَّذِيٓ
alladhi
the one who
ءَامَنَ
amana
believed
يَٰقَوۡمِ
yaqawmi
O my people
ٱتَّبِعُونِ
ittabi'uni
Follow me
أَهۡدِكُمۡ
ahdikum
I will guide you
سَبِيلَ
sabila
(to the) way
ٱلرَّشَادِ
al-rashadi
the right
٣٨

The believer said, ‘My people, follow me! I will guide you to the right path

40:39
يَٰقَوۡمِ
yaqawmi
O my people
إِنَّمَا
innama
Only
هَٰذِهِ
hadhihi
this
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ
al-hayatu
the life
ٱلدُّنۡيَا
al-dun'ya
(of) the world
مَتَٰعٞ
mata'un
(is) enjoyment
وَإِنَّ
wa-inna
and indeed
ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ
al-akhirata
the Hereafter
هِيَ
hiya
it
دَارُ
daru
(is the) home
ٱلۡقَرَارِ
al-qarari
(of) settlement
٣٩

My people, the life of this world is only a brief enjoyment; it is the Hereafter that is the lasting home

Translation 1260

40:40
مَنۡ
man
Whoever
عَمِلَ
amila
does
سَيِّئَةٗ
sayyi-atan
an evil
فَلَا
fala
then not
يُجۡزَىٰٓ
yuj'za
he will be recompensed
إِلَّا
illa
but
مِثۡلَهَاۖ
mith'laha
(the) like thereof
وَمَنۡ
waman
and whoever
عَمِلَ
amila
does
صَٰلِحٗا
salihan
righteous (deeds)
مِّن
min
of
ذَكَرٍ
dhakarin
male
أَوۡ
aw
or
أُنثَىٰ
untha
female
وَهُوَ
wahuwa
while he
مُؤۡمِنٞ
mu'minun
(is) a believer
فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ
fa-ulaika
then those
يَدۡخُلُونَ
yadkhuluna
will enter
ٱلۡجَنَّةَ
al-janata
Paradise
يُرۡزَقُونَ
yur'zaquna
they will be given provision
فِيهَا
fiha
in it
بِغَيۡرِ
bighayri
without
حِسَابٖ
hisabin
account
٤٠

Whoever does evil will be repaid with its like; whoever does good and believes, be it a man or a woman, will enter Paradise and be provided for without measure
