۞إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
رَبَّكَ
rabbaka
your Lord
يَعۡلَمُ
ya'lamu
knows
أَنَّكَ
annaka
that you
تَقُومُ
taqumu
stand
أَدۡنَىٰ
adna
(a little) less
مِن
min
than
ثُلُثَيِ
thuluthayi
two-thirds
ٱلَّيۡلِ
al-layli
(of) the night
وَنِصۡفَهُۥ
wanis'fahu
and half of it
وَثُلُثَهُۥ
wathuluthahu
and a third of it
وَطَآئِفَةٞ
wataifatun
and (so do) a group
مِّنَ
mina
of
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
مَعَكَۚ
ma'aka
(are) with you
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
And Allah
يُقَدِّرُ
yuqaddiru
determines
ٱلَّيۡلَ
al-layla
the night
وَٱلنَّهَارَۚ
wal-nahara
and the day
عَلِمَ
alima
He knows
أَن
an
that
لَّن
lan
not
تُحۡصُوهُ
tuh'suhu
you count it
فَتَابَ
fataba
so He has turned
عَلَيۡكُمۡۖ
alaykum
to you
فَٱقۡرَءُواْ
fa-iq'rau
so recite
مَا
ma
what
تَيَسَّرَ
tayassara
is easy
مِنَ
mina
of
ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِۚ
al-qur'ani
the Quran
عَلِمَ
alima
He knows
أَن
an
that
سَيَكُونُ
sayakunu
there will be
مِنكُم
minkum
among you
مَّرۡضَىٰ
marda
sick
وَءَاخَرُونَ
waakharuna
and others
يَضۡرِبُونَ
yadribuna
traveling
فِي
fi
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the land
يَبۡتَغُونَ
yabtaghuna
seeking
مِن
min
of
فَضۡلِ
fadli
(the) Bounty
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
وَءَاخَرُونَ
waakharuna
and others
يُقَٰتِلُونَ
yuqatiluna
fighting
فِي
fi
in
سَبِيلِ
sabili
(the) way
ٱللَّهِۖ
al-lahi
(of) Allah
فَٱقۡرَءُواْ
fa-iq'rau
So recite
مَا
ma
what
تَيَسَّرَ
tayassara
is easy
مِنۡهُۚ
min'hu
of it
وَأَقِيمُواْ
wa-aqimu
and establish
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ
al-salata
the prayer
وَءَاتُواْ
waatu
and give
ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ
al-zakata
the zakah
وَأَقۡرِضُواْ
wa-aqridu
and loan
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
قَرۡضًا
qardan
a loan
حَسَنٗاۚ
hasanan
goodly
وَمَا
wama
And whatever
تُقَدِّمُواْ
tuqaddimu
you send forth
لِأَنفُسِكُم
li-anfusikum
for yourselves
مِّنۡ
min
of
خَيۡرٖ
khayrin
good
تَجِدُوهُ
tajiduhu
you will find it
عِندَ
inda
with
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
هُوَ
huwa
It
خَيۡرٗا
khayran
(will be) better
وَأَعۡظَمَ
wa-a'zama
and greater
أَجۡرٗاۚ
ajran
(in) reward
وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ
wa-is'taghfiru
And seek forgiveness
ٱللَّهَۖ
al-laha
(of) Allah
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha
Allah
غَفُورٞ
ghafurun
(is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمُۢ
rahimun
Most Merciful
٢٠

[Prophet], your Lord is well aware that you sometimes spend nearly two-thirds of the night at prayer––sometimes half, sometimes a third––as do some of your followers. God determines the division of night and day. He knows that you will not be able to keep a measure of it and He has relented towards all of you, so recite as much of the Quran as is easy for you. He knows that some of you will be sick, some of you travelling through the land seeking God’s bounty, some of you fighting in God’s way: recite as much as is easy for you, keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and make God a good loan. Whatever good you store up for yourselves will be improved and increased for you. Ask God for His forgiveness, He is most forgiving, most merciful

Translation 1260

74:1
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
yaayyuha
O you
ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ
al-mudathiru
who covers himself
١

You, wrapped in your cloak

Translation 1260

74:2
قُمۡ
qum
Stand up
فَأَنذِرۡ
fa-andhir
and warn
٢

arise and give warning

Translation 1260

74:3
وَرَبَّكَ
warabbaka
And your Lord
فَكَبِّرۡ
fakabbir
magnify
٣

Proclaim the greatness of your Lord

Translation 1260

74:4
وَثِيَابَكَ
wathiyabaka
And your clothing
فَطَهِّرۡ
fatahhir
purify
٤

cleanse yourself

Translation 1260

74:5
وَٱلرُّجۡزَ
wal-ruj'za
And uncleanliness
فَٱهۡجُرۡ
fa-uh'jur
avoid
٥

keep away from all filth

Translation 1260

74:6
وَلَا
wala
And (do) not
تَمۡنُن
tamnun
confer favor
تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ
tastakthiru
(to) acquire more
٦

do not be overwhelmed and weaken

74:7
وَلِرَبِّكَ
walirabbika
And for your Lord
فَٱصۡبِرۡ
fa-is'bir
be patient
٧

be steadfast in your Lord’s cause

74:8
فَإِذَا
fa-idha
Then when
نُقِرَ
nuqira
is blown
فِي
fi
in
ٱلنَّاقُورِ
al-naquri
the trumpet
٨

When the Trumpet sounds

Translation 1260

74:9
فَذَٰلِكَ
fadhalika
That
يَوۡمَئِذٖ
yawma-idhin
Day
يَوۡمٌ
yawmun
(will be) a Day
عَسِيرٌ
asirun
difficult
٩

that will be a Day of anguish for the disbelievers

74:10
عَلَى
ala
For
ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
al-kafirina
the disbelievers
غَيۡرُ
ghayru
not
يَسِيرٖ
yasirin
easy
١٠

They will have no ease

74:11
ذَرۡنِي
dharni
Leave Me
وَمَنۡ
waman
and whom
خَلَقۡتُ
khalaqtu
I created
وَحِيدٗا
wahidan
alone
١١

[Prophet], leave Me to deal with the one I created helpless

74:12
وَجَعَلۡتُ
waja'altu
And I granted
لَهُۥ
lahu
to him
مَالٗا
malan
wealth
مَّمۡدُودٗا
mamdudan
extensive
١٢

then gave vast wealth

74:13
وَبَنِينَ
wabanina
And children
شُهُودٗا
shuhudan
present
١٣

and sons by his side

Translation 1260

74:14
وَمَهَّدتُّ
wamahhadttu
And I spread
لَهُۥ
lahu
for him
تَمۡهِيدٗا
tamhidan
ease
١٤

making everything easy for him––

74:15
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
يَطۡمَعُ
yatma'u
he desires
أَنۡ
an
that
أَزِيدَ
azida
I (should) add more
١٥

yet he still hopes I will give him more

74:16
كـَلَّآۖ
kalla
By no means
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed he
كَانَ
kana
has been
لِأٓيَٰتِنَا
liayatina
to Our Verses
عَنِيدٗا
anidan
stubborn
١٦

No! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation

74:17
سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ
sa-ur'hiquhu
Soon I will cover Him
صَعُودًا
sa'udan
(with) a laborious punishment
١٧

I will inflict a spiralling torment on him

He planned and plotted––

فَقُتِلَ

So may he be destroyed
كَيۡفَ

he plotted

devilishly he plotted

ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
قُتِلَ
qutila
may he be destroyed
كَيۡفَ
kayfa
how
قَدَّرَ
qaddara
he plotted
٢٠

ferociously he plotted!––

ثُمَّ

Then
نَظَرَ
nazara
he looked

and looked

ثُمَّ

Then
عَبَسَ
abasa
he frowned
وَبَسَرَ
wabasara
and scowled
٢٢

and frowned and scowled

74:23
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
أَدۡبَرَ
adbara
he turned back
وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ
wa-is'takbara
and was proud
٢٣

and turned away and behaved arrogantly

74:24
فَقَالَ
faqala
Then he said
إِنۡ

هَٰذَآ
hadha
(is) this
إِلَّا
illa
but
سِحۡرٞ
sih'run
magic
يُؤۡثَرُ
yu'tharu
imitated
٢٤

and said, ‘This is just old sorcery

إِنۡ

إِلَّا
illa
but
قَوۡلُ
qawlu
(the) word
ٱلۡبَشَرِ
al-bashari
(of) a human being
٢٥

just the talk of a mortal!’

74:26
سَأُصۡلِيهِ
sa-us'lihi
Soon I will drive him
سَقَرَ
saqara
(into) Hell
٢٦

I will throw him into the scorching Fire

74:27
وَمَآ
wama
And what
أَدۡرَىٰكَ
adraka
can make you know
مَا
ma
what
سَقَرُ
saqaru
(is) Hell
٢٧

What will explain to you what the scorching Fire is

لَا

Not
تُبۡقِي
tub'qi
it lets remain
وَلَا
wala
and not
تَذَرُ
tadharu
it leaves
٢٨

It spares nothing and leaves nothing

74:29
لَوَّاحَةٞ
lawwahatun
Scorching
لِّلۡبَشَرِ
lil'bashari
the human (skin)
٢٩

it scorches the flesh of humans

74:30
عَلَيۡهَا
alayha
Over it
تِسۡعَةَ
tis'ata
(are) nine
عَشَرَ
ashara
teen
٣٠

there are nineteen in charge of it––

وَمَا
wama
And not
جَعَلۡنَآ
ja'alna
We have made
أَصۡحَٰبَ
ashaba
keepers
ٱلنَّارِ
al-nari
(of) the Fire
إِلَّا
illa
except
مَلَٰٓئِكَةٗۖ
malaikatan
Angels
وَمَا
wama
And not
جَعَلۡنَا
ja'alna
We have made
عِدَّتَهُمۡ
iddatahum
their number
إِلَّا
illa
except
فِتۡنَةٗ
fit'natan
(as) a trial
لِّلَّذِينَ
lilladhina
for those who
كَفَرُواْ
kafaru
disbelieve
لِيَسۡتَيۡقِنَ
liyastayqina
that may be certain
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
أُوتُواْ
utu
were given
ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ
al-kitaba
the Scripture
وَيَزۡدَادَ
wayazdada
and may increase
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
ءَامَنُوٓاْ
amanu
believe
إِيمَٰنٗا
imanan
(in) faith
وَلَا
wala
and not
يَرۡتَابَ
yartaba
may doubt
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
أُوتُواْ
utu
were given
ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ
al-kitaba
the Scripture
وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ
wal-mu'minuna
and the believers
وَلِيَقُولَ
waliyaqula
and that may say
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those
فِي
fi
in
قُلُوبِهِم
qulubihim
their hearts
مَّرَضٞ
maradun
(is) a disease
وَٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ
wal-kafiruna
and the disbelievers
مَاذَآ
madha
What
أَرَادَ
arada
(does) intend
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah
بِهَٰذَا
bihadha
by this
مَثَلٗاۚ
mathalan
example
كَذَٰلِكَ
kadhalika
Thus
يُضِلُّ
yudillu
does let go astray
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah
مَن
man
whom
يَشَآءُ
yashau
He wills
وَيَهۡدِي
wayahdi
and guides
مَن
man
whom
يَشَآءُۚ
yashau
He wills
وَمَا
wama
And none
يَعۡلَمُ
ya'lamu
knows
جُنُودَ
junuda
(the) hosts
رَبِّكَ
rabbika
(of) your Lord
إِلَّا
illa
except
هُوَۚ
huwa
Him
وَمَا
wama
And not
هِيَ
hiya
it
إِلَّا
illa
(is) but
ذِكۡرَىٰ
dhik'ra
a reminder
لِلۡبَشَرِ
lil'bashari
to (the) human beings
٣١

none other than angels appointed by Us to guard Hellfire- and We have made their number a test for the disbelievers. So those who have been given the Scripture will be certain and those who believe will have their faith increased: neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers will have any doubts, but the sick at heart and the disbelievers will say, ‘What could God mean by this description?’ God leaves whoever He will to stray and guides whoever He will- no one knows your Lord’s forces except Him- this [description] is a warning to mortals

74:32
كـَلَّا
kalla
Nay
وَٱلۡقَمَرِ
wal-qamari
By the moon
٣٢

Yes––by the moon

74:33
وَٱلَّيۡلِ
wa-al-layli
And the night
إِذۡ
idh
when
أَدۡبَرَ
adbara
it departs
٣٣

By the departing night

74:34
وَٱلصُّبۡحِ
wal-sub'hi
And the morning
إِذَآ
idha
when
أَسۡفَرَ
asfara
it brightens
٣٤

By the shining dawn

74:35
إِنَّهَا
innaha
Indeed it
لَإِحۡدَى
la-ih'da
(is) surely one
ٱلۡكُبَرِ
al-kubari
(of) the greatest
٣٥

It is one of the mightiest things

74:36
نَذِيرٗا
nadhiran
A warning
لِّلۡبَشَرِ
lil'bashari
to (the) human being
٣٦

a warning to all mortals

74:37
لِمَن
liman
To whoever
شَآءَ
shaa
wills
مِنكُمۡ
minkum
among you
أَن
an
to
يَتَقَدَّمَ
yataqaddama
proceed
أَوۡ
aw
or
يَتَأَخَّرَ
yata-akhara
stay behind
٣٧

to those of you who choose to go ahead and those who lag behind

كُلُّ

Every
نَفۡسِۭ
nafsin
soul
بِمَا
bima
for what
كَسَبَتۡ
kasabat
it has earned
رَهِينَةٌ
rahinatun
(is) pledged
٣٨

Every soul is held in pledge for its deeds

إِلَّآ

أَصۡحَٰبَ

(the) companions
ٱلۡيَمِينِ
al-yamini
(of) the right
٣٩

but the Companions of the Right will stay

يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

asking each other

in Gardens and ask

عَنِ

the criminals
٤١

about the guilty

74:42
مَا
ma

سَلَكَكُمۡ

led you
فِي

سَقَرَ
saqara
Hell
٤٢

‘What drove you to the Scorching Fire?’ [they will ask]

قَالُواْ

They will say
لَمۡ
lam
Not
نَكُ
naku
we were
مِنَ
mina
of
ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ
al-musalina
those who prayed
٤٣

and they will answer, ‘We did not pray

وَلَمۡ
walam
And not
نَكُ
naku
we used to
نُطۡعِمُ
nut'imu
feed
ٱلۡمِسۡكِينَ
al-mis'kina
the poor
٤٤

we did not feed the poor

74:45
وَكُنَّا
wakunna
And we used to
نَخُوضُ
nakhudu
indulge in vain talk
مَعَ
ma'a
with
ٱلۡخَآئِضِينَ
al-khaidina
the vain talkers
٤٥

we indulged with others [in mocking the believers]

74:46
وَكُنَّا
wakunna
And we used to
نُكَذِّبُ
nukadhibu
deny
بِيَوۡمِ
biyawmi
(the) Day
ٱلدِّينِ
al-dini
(of) the Judgment
٤٦

we denied the Day of Judgement

74:47
حَتَّىٰٓ
hatta
Until
أَتَىٰنَا
atana
came to us
ٱلۡيَقِينُ
al-yaqinu
the certainty
٤٧

until the Certain End came upon us.’

will benefit them
شَفَٰعَةُ
shafa'atu
intercession
ٱلشَّٰفِعِينَ
al-shafi'ina
(of) the intercessors

No intercessor’s plea will benefit them now

74:49
فَمَا
fama
Then what
لَهُمۡ
lahum
(is) for them
عَنِ
ani
(that) from
ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ
al-tadhkirati
the Reminder
مُعۡرِضِينَ
mu'ridina
they (are) turning away
٤٩

What is the matter with them? Why do they turn away from the warning

كَأَنَّهُمۡ

As if they (were)
حُمُرٞ

donkeys
مُّسۡتَنفِرَةٞ
mus'tanfiratun
frightened
٥٠

like frightened asses

فَرَّتۡ
farrat
Fleeing
مِن

قَسۡوَرَةِۭ

a lion
٥١

fleeing from a lion

74:52
بَلۡ
bal
Nay
يُرِيدُ
yuridu
Desires
كُلُّ
kullu
every
ٱمۡرِيٕٖ
im'ri-in
person
مِّنۡهُمۡ
min'hum
of them
أَن
an
that
يُؤۡتَىٰ
yu'ta
he may be given
صُحُفٗا
suhufan
pages
مُّنَشَّرَةٗ
munasharatan
spread out
٥٢

Each one of them demands that a scripture be sent down to him and unrolled before his very eyes

74:53
كـَلَّاۖ
kalla
Nay
بَل
bal
But
لَّا
la
not
يَخَافُونَ
yakhafuna
they fear
ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ
al-akhirata
the Hereafter
٥٣

No! Truly they have no fear of the life to come

كـَلَّآ

Nay
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed it
تَذۡكِرَةٞ
tadhkiratun
(is) a Reminder
٥٤

but truly this is a reminder

74:55
فَمَن
faman
So whoever
شَآءَ
shaa
wills
ذَكَرَهُۥ
dhakarahu
(may) pay heed to it
٥٥

Let whoever wishes to take heed do so

74:56
وَمَا
wama
And not
يَذۡكُرُونَ
yadhkuruna
will pay heed
إِلَّآ
illa
except
أَن
an
that
يَشَآءَ
yashaa
wills
ٱللَّهُۚ
al-lahu
Allah
هُوَ
huwa
He
أَهۡلُ
ahlu
(is) worthy
ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ
al-taqwa
to be feared
وَأَهۡلُ
wa-ahlu
and worthy
ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ
al-maghfirati
to forgive
٥٦

they will only take heed if God so wishes. He is the Lord who should be heeded, the Lord of forgiveness
