16:43
وَمَآ
wama
And not
أَرۡسَلۡنَا
arsalna
We sent
مِن
min
before you
قَبۡلِكَ
qablika
before you
إِلَّا
illa
except
رِجَالٗا
rijalan
men
نُّوحِيٓ
nuhi
We revealed
إِلَيۡهِمۡۖ
ilayhim
to them
فَسۡـَٔلُوٓاْ
fasalu
so ask
أَهۡلَ
ahla
(the) people
ٱلذِّكۡرِ
al-dhik'ri
(of) the Reminder
إِن
in
if
كُنتُمۡ
kuntum
you
لَا
la
(do) not
تَعۡلَمُونَ
ta'lamuna
know
٤٣

[Prophet], all the messengers We sent before you were simply men to whom We had given the Revelation: you [people] can ask those who have knowledge if you do not know

Translation 1260

16:44
بِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِ
bil-bayinati
With the clear proofs
وَٱلزُّبُرِۗ
wal-zuburi
and the Books
وَأَنزَلۡنَآ
wa-anzalna
And We sent down
إِلَيۡكَ
ilayka
to you
ٱلذِّكۡرَ
al-dhik'ra
the Remembrance
لِتُبَيِّنَ
litubayyina
that you may make clear
لِلنَّاسِ
lilnnasi
to the mankind
مَا
ma
what
نُزِّلَ
nuzzila
has been sent down
إِلَيۡهِمۡ
ilayhim
to them
وَلَعَلَّهُمۡ
wala'allahum
and that they may
يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
yatafakkaruna
reflect
٤٤

We sent them with clear signs and scriptures. We have sent down the message to you too [Prophet], so that you can explain to people what was sent for them, so that they may reflect

Translation 1260

16:45
أَفَأَمِنَ
afa-amina
Do then feel secure
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhina
those who
مَكَرُواْ
makaru
plotted
ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ
al-sayiati
the evil deeds
أَن
an
that
يَخۡسِفَ
yakhsifa
Allah will cave
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah will cave
بِهِمُ
bihimu
with them
ٱلۡأَرۡضَ
al-arda
the earth
أَوۡ
aw
or
يَأۡتِيَهُمُ
yatiyahumu
will come to them
ٱلۡعَذَابُ
al-'adhabu
the punishment
مِنۡ
min
from
حَيۡثُ
haythu
where
لَا
la
not
يَشۡعُرُونَ
yash'uruna
they perceive
٤٥

Are those who plan evil so sure that God will not make the earth swallow them up, that punishment will not come on them from some unimagined direction

Translation 1260

16:46
أَوۡ
aw
Or
يَأۡخُذَهُمۡ
yakhudhahum
that He may seize them
فِي
fi
in
تَقَلُّبِهِمۡ
taqallubihim
their going to and fro
فَمَا
fama
then not
هُم
hum
they
بِمُعۡجِزِينَ
bimu'jizina
will be able to escape
٤٦

that it will not catch them suddenly in the midst of their comings and goings- for they cannot frustrate God

Translation 1260

16:47
أَوۡ
aw
Or
يَأۡخُذَهُمۡ
yakhudhahum
that He may seize them
عَلَىٰ
ala
with
تَخَوُّفٖ
takhawwufin
a gradual wasting
فَإِنَّ
fa-inna
But indeed
رَبَّكُمۡ
rabbakum
your Lord
لَرَءُوفٞ
laraufun
(is) surely Full of Kindness
رَّحِيمٌ
rahimun
Most Merciful
٤٧

or that it will not catch up with them gradually? Indeed your Lord is kind and merciful

Translation 1260

16:48
أَوَلَمۡ
awalam
Have not
يَرَوۡاْ
yaraw
they seen
إِلَىٰ
ila
[towards]
مَا
ma
what
خَلَقَ
khalaqa
Allah has created
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
Allah has created
مِن
min
from
شَيۡءٖ
shayin
a thing
يَتَفَيَّؤُاْ
yatafayya-u
Incline
ظِلَٰلُهُۥ
zilaluhu
their shadows
عَنِ
ani
to
ٱلۡيَمِينِ
al-yamini
the right
وَٱلشَّمَآئِلِ
wal-shamaili
and to the left
سُجَّدٗا
sujjadan
prostrating
لِّلَّهِ
lillahi
to Allah
وَهُمۡ
wahum
while they
دَٰخِرُونَ
dakhiruna
(are) humble
٤٨

Do the [disbelievers] not observe the things that God has created, casting their shadows right and left, submitting themselves to God obediently

Translation 1260

16:49
وَلِلَّهِۤ
walillahi
And to Allah
يَسۡجُدُۤ
yasjudu
prostrate
مَا
ma
whatever
فِي
fi
(is) in
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
al-samawati
the heavens
وَمَا
wama
and whatever
فِي
fi
(is) in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
al-ardi
the earth
مِن
min
of
دَآبَّةٖ
dabbatin
moving creatures
وَٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ
wal-malaikatu
and the Angels
وَهُمۡ
wahum
and they
لَا
la
(are) not
يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ
yastakbiruna
arrogant
٤٩

It is to God that everything in the heavens and earth submits, every beast that moves, even the angels- they are free from arrogance

Translation 1260

16:50
يَخَافُونَ
yakhafuna
They fear
رَبَّهُم
rabbahum
their Lord
مِّن
min
above them
فَوۡقِهِمۡ
fawqihim
above them
وَيَفۡعَلُونَ
wayaf 'aluna
and they do
مَا
ma
what
يُؤۡمَرُونَ۩
yu'maruna
they are commanded
٥٠

they fear their Lord above them, and they do as they are commanded

Translation 1260

16:51
۞وَقَالَ
waqala
And Allah has said
ٱللَّهُ
al-lahu
And Allah has said
لَا
la
(Do) not
تَتَّخِذُوٓاْ
tattakhidhu
take
إِلَٰهَيۡنِ
ilahayni
[two] gods
ٱثۡنَيۡنِۖ
ith'nayni
two
إِنَّمَا
innama
only
هُوَ
huwa
He
إِلَٰهٞ
ilahun
(is) God
وَٰحِدٞ
wahidun
One
فَإِيَّٰيَ
fa-iyyaya
so Me Alone
فَٱرۡهَبُونِ
fa-ir'habuni
you fear [Me]
٥١

God said, ‘Do not take two gods’- for He is the One God––‘ I alone am the One that you should hold in awe.’

Translation 1260

16:52
وَلَهُۥ
walahu
And to Him (belongs)
مَا
ma
whatever
فِي
fi
(is) in
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
al-samawati
the heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ
wal-ardi
and the earth
وَلَهُ
walahu
and to Him
ٱلدِّينُ
al-dinu
(is due) the worship
وَاصِبًاۚ
wasiban
constantly
أَفَغَيۡرَ
afaghayra
Then is it other (than)
ٱللَّهِ
al-lahi
Allah
تَتَّقُونَ
tattaquna
you fear
٥٢

Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him: everlasting obedience is His right. Will you heed anyone other than God

Translation 1260

16:53
وَمَا
wama
And whatever
بِكُم
bikum
you have
مِّن
min
of
نِّعۡمَةٖ
ni'matin
favor
فَمِنَ
famina
(is) from
ٱللَّهِۖ
al-lahi
Allah
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
إِذَا
idha
when
مَسَّكُمُ
massakumu
touches you
ٱلضُّرُّ
al-duru
the adversity
فَإِلَيۡهِ
fa-ilayhi
then to Him
تَجۡـَٔرُونَ
tajaruna
you cry for help
٥٣

Whatever good things you possess come from God, and when hardship afflicts you, it is to Him alone you cry out for help

Translation 1260

16:54
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
إِذَا
idha
when
كَشَفَ
kashafa
He removes
ٱلضُّرَّ
al-dura
the adversity
عَنكُمۡ
ankum
from you
إِذَا
idha
behold
فَرِيقٞ
fariqun
A group
مِّنكُم
minkum
of you
بِرَبِّهِمۡ
birabbihim
with their Lord
يُشۡرِكُونَ
yush'rikuna
associate others
٥٤

yet when He has relieved you of your hardship- lo and behold!- some of you attribute partners to your Lord
