ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِينَ

(of) the transgressors

ٱلَّذِينَ

يُفۡسِدُونَ

spread corruption

ٱلۡأَرۡضِ

the earth

and (do) not
يُصۡلِحُونَ

reform

and who spread corruption in the land instead of doing what is right.’

They said
إِنَّمَآ

Only
أَنتَ

you
مِنَ

ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِينَ
al-musaharina
those bewitched

They said, ‘You are bewitched

(are) except
بَشَرٞ

a man
مِّثۡلُنَا
mith'luna
like us
فَأۡتِ

so bring
بِـَٔايَةٍ

a sign
إِن

كُنتَ

you
مِنَ
mina
(are) of
ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
al-sadiqina
the truthful

You are nothing but a man like us. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth.’

He said
هَٰذِهِۦ
hadhihi
This
نَاقَةٞ
naqatun
(is) a she-camel
لَّهَا
laha
For her
شِرۡبٞ
shir'bun
(is a share of) drink
وَلَكُمۡ
walakum
and for you
شِرۡبُ
shir'bu
(is a share of) drink
يَوۡمٖ
yawmin
(on) a day
مَّعۡلُومٖ
ma'lumin
known
١٥٥
He said, ‘Here is a camel. She should have her turn to drink and so should you, each on a specified day

وَلَا
wala
And (do) not
تَمَسُّوهَا
tamassuha
touch her
بِسُوٓءٖ
bisuin
with harm
فَيَأۡخُذَكُمۡ
fayakhudhakum
lest seize you
عَذَابُ
adhabu
(the) punishment
يَوۡمٍ
yawmin
(of) a Day
عَظِيمٖ
azimin
Great
١٥٦
so do not harm her, or the punishment of a terrible day will befall you.’

فَعَقَرُوهَا
fa'aqaruha
But they hamstrung her
فَأَصۡبَحُواْ
fa-asbahu
then they became
نَٰدِمِينَ
nadimina
regretful
١٥٧
But they hamstrung her. In the morning they had cause to regret it

فَأَخَذَهُمُ
fa-akhadhahumu
So seized them
ٱلۡعَذَابُۚ
al-'adhabu
the punishment
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
فِي

ذَٰلِكَ

لَأٓيَةٗۖ
laayatan
surely is a sign
وَمَا
wama
but not
كَانَ
kana
are
أَكۡثَرُهُم
aktharuhum
most of them
مُّؤۡمِنِينَ
mu'minina
believers
١٥٨
the punishment fell upon them. There truly is a sign in this, though most of them will not believe

And indeed
رَبَّكَ
rabbaka
your Lord
لَهُوَ
lahuwa
surely He
ٱلۡعَزِيزُ
al-'azizu
(is) the All-Mighty

the Most Merciful

Their brother Lot said to them, ‘Will you not be mindful of God

رَسُولٌ

a Messenger
أَمِينٞ

trustworthy

I am a faithful messenger to you

فَٱتَّقُواْ
fa-ittaqu
So fear
ٱللَّهَ
al-laha

وَأَطِيعُونِ
wa-ati'uni
and obey me

be mindful of God and obey me

وَمَآ

And not
أَسۡـَٔلُكُمۡ
asalukum
I ask you
عَلَيۡهِ
alayhi
for it
مِنۡ

any
أَجۡرٍۖ
ajrin
payment
إِنۡ

Not
أَجۡرِيَ
ajriya
(is) my payment
إِلَّا
illa
except
عَلَىٰ
ala
from
رَبِّ
rabbi
(the) Lord
ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ
al-'alamina
(of) the worlds
١٦٤
I ask no reward from you, for my only reward is with the Lord of the Worlds

أَتَأۡتُونَ
atatuna
Do you approach
ٱلذُّكۡرَانَ
al-dhuk'rana
the males
مِنَ
mina
among
ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ
al-'alamina
the worlds
١٦٥
Must you, unlike [other] people, lust after males

وَتَذَرُونَ
watadharuna
And you leave
مَا
ma
what
خَلَقَ
khalaqa
created
لَكُمۡ
lakum
for you
رَبُّكُم
rabbukum
your Lord
مِّنۡ
min
of
أَزۡوَٰجِكُمۚ
azwajikum
your mates
بَلۡ
bal
Nay
أَنتُمۡ
antum
you
قَوۡمٌ
qawmun
(are) a people
عَادُونَ
aduna
transgressing
١٦٦
and abandon the wives that God has created for you? You are exceeding all bounds,’

قَالُواْ
qalu
They said
لَئِن
la-in
If
لَّمۡ
lam
not
تَنتَهِ
tantahi
you desist
يَٰلُوطُ
yalutu
O Lut
لَتَكُونَنَّ
latakunanna
Surely you will be
مِنَ
mina
of
ٱلۡمُخۡرَجِينَ
al-mukh'rajina
the ones driven out
١٦٧
but they replied, ‘Lot! If you do not stop this, you will be driven away.’

قَالَ
qala
He said
إِنِّي
inni
Indeed I am
لِعَمَلِكُم
li'amalikum
(of) your deed
مِّنَ
mina
of
ٱلۡقَالِينَ
al-qalina
those who detest

So he said, ‘I loathe what you do

My Lord
نَجِّنِي
najjini
Save me
وَأَهۡلِي
wa-ahli
and my family
مِمَّا
mimma
from what
يَعۡمَلُونَ
ya'maluna
they do
١٦٩
Lord, save me and my family from what they are doing.’

فَنَجَّيۡنَٰهُ
fanajjaynahu
So We saved him
وَأَهۡلَهُۥٓ
wa-ahlahu
and his family
أَجۡمَعِينَ
ajma'ina
all

We saved him and all his family

إِلَّا
illa
Except
عَجُوزٗا
ajuzan
an old woman
فِي
fi
(was) among
ٱلۡغَٰبِرِينَ
al-ghabirina
those who remained behind

except for an old woman who stayed behind

thumma
Then
دَمَّرۡنَا
dammarna
We destroyed
ٱلۡأٓخَرِينَ
al-akharina
the others
١٧٢
then We destroyed the others

وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا
wa-amtarna
And We rained
عَلَيۡهِم
alayhim
upon them
مَّطَرٗاۖ
mataran
a rain
فَسَآءَ
fasaa
and evil was
مَطَرُ
mataru
(was) the rain
ٱلۡمُنذَرِينَ
al-mundharina
(on) those who were warned
١٧٣
and poured a rain of destruction down upon them. How dreadful that rain was for those who had been forewarned

ذَٰلِكَ

surely is a sign
